Title: AH2 Remember when?
Post by: PAKFRONT on December 28, 2011, 08:26:23 PM
This is kind of an "Add a Comment" post.. Being an Old/Newb just returning, I have really noticed how the game has changed over the years..
So this is sorta a New Years oriented Post.. I invite all to post about the old foibles of the game, remember where we came from, and appreciate where we are now! Please, one to a person, leave something for someone else.. Thanks HT and Crew, the mothership has flown a fair distance huh?

Do ya Remember when???
You could adjust your vid settings, so you had X ray vision, could see str8 through the mountains?

Remember when opposing countries ( or opposing squads ) met each other at altitude and battled their way pushing forward or being pushed back with each side fighting for the others base, and the thought of a "horde" was committing a sin just thinking about it ( just kiddin )........ but no one avoided the fight from any country .......... you grabbed land but you fought for it and did not carefreely roll bases with gigantic horde swarms unopposed while another country did the same and the 3rd country did the same all 3 countries grabbing bases and not actually doing any fighting......... I have not seen that happen in awhile though so maybe we have moved beyond that little bump in time .... history is always repeating itself, so here is hopefully to history coming back to what it was before ....... things are looking better for Aces High with every new "frequent update" and semi frequent new version  :aok

How hard that first take off in the 51 was in the beta after coming over from AW FR on Gamestorm.
Walking out of the tower and out past the base.
Being impressed with the "big names" from sims past all united in one sim and one arena.
Pitch black night fights.
The donut map.

having to do as Scotch post and walk from the tower to the map room  or from the map room to the hangar
instead of launching right on the runway. You had to taxi out from the "camaflouge net covered hangar area" (because we had no hangar buildings per say just a few upside down u shaped hangars) on the dirt taxi ways to the dirt runway to take off and there was no auto take off back in those days

Remembering when there were GV spawns to strats that were scattered about.  You could spawn to an nme strat with an osti or an SDK and lay waste to it then wait for a train to come in a blow it up too. It was a victimless diversion just for the sheer joy of hearing things explode...

It was also fun to resupply  a friendly one and get enough perks for a tiger :)

Which IMO was the best map for combined GV and air attacks.

Some didnt like the color, Which could have been changed though I had no prob with it.
The only thing I didnt like about it was the way the countries were initially laid out

Yeah you could farm GV perks at the Strats with a tank.. But better was the rockets from a 251.. Better yet, was the EXPERT Perk farming method!  Take some heavy bonbers to the strat, drop your full load from High Alt, then tower, quickly roll a 251 to the same strat and start shootin rockets.. You got Mega Score in your GV from the Bombs coming down.. Another player told me about that, no names, lol! Never did it myself, not worth it to me.. To me, that wasn't farmin honest perks, that was grubbin in the dumpster!

Actually, just upping a 251 would have sufficed  :noid

To all who are now jumping into the arena for a try: That had been fixed long time ago - It's the reason why your ords/troops disappear instantly when you respawn too fast after being sent to tower.

And to put this back to topic: I do remember when this fix happened. As almost nobody ever reads the release notes, I saw quite a number of base captures failing when the running troops suddenly vanished without a trace  :D

Remember when the war victory requirement was getting ONE country down to 5 bases and holding more of that country than the 3rd country? Up to several resets in 24 hours by piling on one and the same underdog country with both "big ones" avoiding the battle between them on the way to reset...

Nostaligic, but not AH  AW3, havent been playing AH long enough, but it's still on point for sim fans.

I remember King of the hill and winning too, (go me, YaY!) using the tactic of flying inside a volcano's caldera.

I also remember a fantistic tactic in AW3 was the double immelman

Stall fighting in an A26

I was awesome in a P40 (I suck hard here though :/)

The little lines our CO drew in the mission briefing for our route, which we almost never followed.

Upping a mission many many sectors away from the enemy base on the deck, because we knew the enemy would never look down, and it worked! (still showed dar)

The F4UD being the most similar aircraft to AW3 when I joined AH.  I remember dogfighting Badz one on one alot in it.  (and if he's no longer around, I always won :D)

I remember when there were not any "uncapturable" bases and winning the war was done by capturing all of one country's bases, while having more bases than the surviving third country.  When a country got down to one base it was an epic dogpile and the losing country fighting to the last man to hold the base.  Funny thing is, I don't recall guys coming in to drop all the hangers at teh last base and halt the fight in those situations, as is so common today. It was more fun for all to fight to the death over that last base.

7/10 aircraft in the skies were La7's.

It was the same way when the C-Hog was released, and lasted quite a while.

What about car bombing buffs? I think this was A/H 2?

In A/H at the start you had a giant pizza and bottle of Shiner Bock at one of the fields. The FDB used to defend that base with the tenacity of someone defending their own home!   :rofl

When we had the 109-G10
We never had a Bf109G-10.  We had a Bf109K-4 that was labeled as a Bf109G-10 as an excuse to give it the 20mm motorkannon and 20mm gondola options.  If it had actually been a Bf109G-10 it would have had a top speed of about 425mph instead of the Bf109K-4's 452mph.

I think most are aware of that. But we still miss our "G10" all the same. And an actuall Bf109-G10 would still be nice. Give us something to fill the gap between the G6 and the G14.

No it wouldn't.  The Bf109G-10 entered service in November 1944, well after both the Bf109G-6 and Bf109G-14.  It was even later to service than the Bf109K-4 which entered service in October of 1944.

Hmmm.... then what variant am I thinking of? Maybe I'm thinking of the 190's or something.

The debate about which operating system would be better for playing AH: Windows 98 SE or XP, ME being the Vista of those days...

Remember capturing a base by sliding in at 300 mph with a JU52?  I think you had to slide up to a building, most of the time without wings.   hahahaha

Bring back the JU52.

Remember that 7K base in the center of one of Festers maps? The fights that happened for that base were epic. The tank battles that ran up those valleys where there were 8 or so bases in a line. Again great fights up and down them. That was a fun map.

First "con" mission I ever witnessed. Flying PT Boats. My brother Flayed1 found where HiTech's PT aerial spawn point was and orbited it with his B26's, the result of which Hitech was shot down (or sunk, if you prefer) five times.

(Flayed, correct my story if I'm wrong, but I think that's how it went.) ;)

I remember Denholm airport map in H2H. Buzzing the tower and was like a lighter hearted version of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004.

I remember epic custom maps, including 2 V-Bases joined by a huge bridge (looked like the Golden Gate), with shore batteries on both sides, epic tank battles in between.
I remember a map with volcanoes and of course, snow maps.

I remember the day the "endless bombs" hack was seen in H2H, and everyone went nuts.
I remember Skuzzy coming into a server (with text only), and asking what the hell was going on. When myself and a few other players told him what was happening, he didn't believe us, and kicked me out of the server (probably because I called him a dummy for not seeing this  :o :lol).

I remember about two weeks later, H2H was shut down (indefinitely), and of course I was pissed and left the game, didn't come back until last year.

I remember a few old names, Denholm, Blue (not sure if that's his name, but he hosted a server with MA settings, and an excellent P38 pilot that taught me pretty much everything), and B2B (which I still see  :aok), and a bunch of other that I've forgotten.

Lol I remember that, Slash was driving the PT boat and I was gunning. That PT was wicked the way it moved. I almost puked a couple times. :lol

I think the muppet's tried to put 2 missions together to face each other in the middle of an ocean.

Those 20+ vs 20+ was the only time a good ol' fashion air battle happened, I can't remember how long ago.

/90mph down hill race to slam into a sheep.

The Kill Chat buffer.  You know, back in 2000/2001 when every single kill was reported in bright grey letters in the channel 1 (the old 200) chat report buffer.

It was really cool seeing the results of verbal sparring on the ch1/200 result in the death of somebody pretty much in real time.  It gave everyone a lot of laughs when you would see somebody beaking off and then being reported as a kill by the person they were just yapping at.

I wish they would bring it back as a tunable channel, like 201 or something, for those of us that wished to follow it.  It also gave pilots a sense of accomplishment without having to "land" their kills to get their name in the lights.

Bring it back!  Bring it back!
