very nicely played positions. been playing for 13 years, and of the games I've watched of high school hockey, except for a few games when I was in youth and the local private school which is D1, I have never seen such good game play (until the fight, seen bigger over less :lol).
the guy at the end of the fight screaming the vulgarities at the players :rofl

Had to man.. I'm sure you understand :D
Of course my psycho / idiot (see Christoper Titus) self would have kamakazied right onto the ice and looked for somebody to pummel.
Back when I was your age that would have been acceptable and even expected (granted yelling 'TIMMMAYYYYYY' as I headed for the pile would just about sum up the intelligence level of such an action).
Good to see you've got a better head on your shoulders today than I did back then. :)
Come to think of it.. you've got a better head on your shoulders than I do now.. TIM TIM TIIIIMAAAAYYYYYY!!!! *dives on the pile.

one of the first games i saw, as soon as the game begin to guys skated up to each other and started fighting...what way to kick it off
-
My kid is starting to play hockey and I told him he can't fight until he's getting paid to play, since I don't want to have to pick up the bill to take him to the ER.
I read some stories about how the enforcers are doing in the NHL... Basically they're coming down with stress disorders and suffering significant brain injuries because they fight hundreds of times each year, much much more than any other professional fighters in any licensed combat sport. Apparently the NHL is finally figuring out what boxing and MMA already knew, that fighting is pretty hazardous if it's not carefully monitored, and the brain damage starts with the very first hit.
-
Yea, after seeing that video I think it would make a good anonymous submission to the state athletic commission, asking why participants and referees of a combat sport are not being regulated and certified at the state level, where is the doctor's evaluation of everyone that took even a single punch after the fight, why combatants who fail to follow referee instructions are not given long-term suspensions, etc... High school kids aren't supposed to be beating on each other without some serious precautions, hockey "tradition" be damned. The evidence about how damaging that sort of thing is to the brain is increasing rapidly so if the sport includes hand to hand combat, it should be regulated no differently than youth boxing.
After they're "adults" and not in the public school system, fights on and let them do whatever they can want IMHO.
-
American football is in the same predicament as hockey with head injuries.

Lacrosse fights are better. The kids don't have skates on, and they square up without losing balance.

anyone can fight without skates on.
-
Players get ejected for this stuff in every other sport. We had a local HS football team miss the playoffs because of a fight involving 4 or 5 players that all got ejected. NHL is one thing, but at the High School level? I like tough sports, and hockey certainly is, but letting them fight at the HS level is, IMO, dumb.

fighting is automatic DQ(ejection). Depending on which rules the game is played under, the offending player will also be suspended for additional games.

When i was in football in 7th grade, a Giant fight erupted at our highschool football game, The opposing team(batavia) were losing badly and weren't happy about it. Tensions were pretty high and some of the batavia gang thought they would jump a hometown person BEHIND the hometown bleachers. When they did, the entire hometown bleachers started jumping down and swarming the batavia group. I still remember how ppl were jumping off the top of the bleachers to get into the fight. I would of been in it too, If one of our 8th grade players hadn't grabbed me into the concession stand.
My Freshmen year, a Fight erupted on-field during a scrimmage. we were on punt return, When this #7 of the other team just runs up, grabs one of our players by the facemask, And starts punching him threw it. Our team pounced on that guy, which lead to the other team jumping on us, which lead to the bench erupting. I punched someone in the throat but got my fingers stepped on by some pretty hard cleats.
In the end, The kid who had started it all was forced to send an apology letter. That must have been to much tho, Because out of every word he wrote (2 paragraphs) not a single one was spelled correctly. we could barely make out anything he said.

Glass houses, bro. I wouldn't be too critical about someone's command of the English language until you have a strong grasp of it yourself.

Don't be sarcastic, obviously he lives in the San Francisco area and a baseball fight overflowed into his area.

Goalie came to his Pals defense, who was getting 2 on 1'ed, and they suspend him? Bad form! I'd say give him an award. AND he beat the snot out of the knucklehead to boot.
Great game hockey. I'd rather see skating then fighting but understand why fights happen.

Where is "hometown"? Sounds fairly close to me. Buncha guys I work with live in Batavia/Amelia/Milford areas.

The refs let that game get out of control and could have prevented the fights. As for fighting at the high school level (3 years varsity), if we fought (anyone dropped a glove on either team) after a goal, the suspensions were very severe. We occasionally had minor scraps, but most of all, our seasons were short enough 24 games that we worked out so hard to play we did not want to miss out owing to suspensions. Mind you, I went on to play after high school where things were a whole lot different and we did not have face masks... Makes me shake my head almost twenty years later....

I don't see how the refs could have prevented a fight. I may understand someone saying the refs didn't intervene enough. I don't play or watch hockey, but I really can't blame anyone for not intervening with a bunch of amped up dumb high school kids in pads. It's sort of their job I suppose, but in my naive view, the refs handled that situation about as good as they could.
-
Of course, no one should have to pry apart two hockey players who are whaling on each other. However, the point of the ref is to prevent it from getting to that point in the first place.

So right. How many cheap shots and no calls happened earlier in the game?

The refs job besides calling the game is to monitor stuff like the antics that led up to that fight after the game. As soon as the teams started getting chippy with one another, the refs should have warned both benches in advance of game misconducts if it gets out of control.
As you said, you don't watch and haven't played. While not easy, a good ref team can control a game and keep it from getting out of control.
As for the ignorant comment about "dumb kids in pads", I know that a majority of my high school team went on to Ivy League schools, some playing hockey and some just for the education. You might want to realize that the vast majority of hockey players are fairly intelligent as hockey players who are generally excel in the game.

Why not? It gets done in every other sport. Bottom line is these guys watch it on TV and figure its just a part of the game. At the youth level, I don't think so...

I side with that reasoning, but think they also get all the responcibility dumped on them after the finger pointing moves on from the players. They should be fully aware of the atmophere on the ice, the refs are on the ice constantly from start to finish compared to the players who bounce on and off the bench or who get timeouts on the bench or in the box. However, that's also why the coaches and other players on the team and bench should step up - I'm not saying they're not busy or preoccupied, but of all the people in that arena wearing skates or holding a clipboard, the refs are the only ones usually NOT with a minute to spare, sitting on their haunches or shooting the sh!@.
