Title: Exotic Pets
Post by: AKKuya on January 05, 2012, 10:17:45 PM
Suppose you had plenty of money to burn and had connections to bring any animal to your home.  What would it be?

Me.  I would build an enormous freshwater tank and keep several dolphins.  Or, a great white shark.  Then, I'll need to buy a bigger boat also.

I would never buy any animal simply because it is "exotic", unless it had friends and enemies, as well as the right food and habitat.

That said?

Blue whale :) they're so awesome

You better make that a salt water tank. Dolphins don't do very well in freshwater, and great white sharks don't do well in captivity at all.

I don't need anything exotic, I'd just rescue more dogs.

American Bison and wild mustangs ....thousands of them roaming on a half million acres in western Montana. I'd like to have some mules too. That's what I'd have if money was no object.

If i had to pick 1 or 2 small animals for inside the home I'd have poison dart frogs. They look pretty cool.

Always wanted a Tasmanian Devil but heard they stink really bad,...... worse than a skunk is what i heard.

A Koala Bear would be very awesome Cleric!

I grew up on a farm and we had a bull similar to this one that was a pet.  You could sit on him and he wouldn't even move, would eat out of your hands, for the life of me I can't remember his name. We took a picture with him and 6 of us was on his back, I remember he weighed 3500 lbs a very big bull

I was given an eviction notice last month because I had a baby bearded dragon..Apparently certain lizards violate a Hamilton County by-law that bans "exotic pets"...The 1984 by-law lumps bearded dragons in the same catagory as "Lions, bears, tigers, komoto dragons..etc"..Might as well have included fricken lock-ness monsters too I mentioned to the superintendant as I protested. He didn't care that I had the lizard(said he'd look the other way)..That it was head office worried because the previous week a reticulated python had escaped one tenant's enclosure, made it into the sewage system and reappeared when some lady from another apt lifted her toilet seat and saw a 6 foot constrictor coiled up..It made the newspapers and when animal control showed up,it was found making it's home in the lady's bath tub...The irony in this it was rescued and given a new home in the same reptile zoo that I bought my bearded dragon from.

btw the dancing banana is racist

honestly I just love animals......I have far more respect for animals then most people, the reason being is with animals you always know what they are...you have an Alligator you know he is an Alligator he is not gonna pretend to be a rabbit so it can get close to you then try to bite ya....with people you never know.....

I use to make A lot of money....and I mean A LOT....no kids at the time, so I spent most of it on animals and taking care of them....

I would go through 1000 gold fish a week, 15 rats a month, 4 rabbits a week..... :O

It's 70mph

I always remember it as 70 just looked it up and it said 70 to 75mph so 80 is close enough, still fast as heck though.

How is that known?

How do you convince a cheetah to run as absolutely fast as it can?  Are all cheetahs capable of the same speed (some people are faster than others...)?

A predator generally goes as fast as it needs to in order to catch its prey, but just because it doesn't catch up to something doesn't necessarily mean that it couldn't...

How accurate is the system for measuring the top speed of a cheetah?  How many different specimens do you need to check to know you've measured the top speed of the fastest one?

I'm actually pretty interested in this subject, because it's so similar to verifying how fast a falcon can fly.  For years top speeds of a peregrine were estimated in the 80-150mph range, but that was really just a bunch of guesswork.  Now that more effort has been put into actual documented measurement it's been found that they can exceed 275mph, and can likely go faster than that.  But the same questions come up...  How fast can they really go, and how do you convince them to do it while you measure it?

I can tell you that from first-hand experience an animal traveling at upwards of 150mph is really impressive.  When they dive it sounds like a giant blowtorch, or someone ripping a giant piece of paper.  You can hear it a LONG ways away, and when you hear it without being able to visually locate the bird it'll make your hair stand on end.  When a falcon comes down and hits a duck or pheasant it sounds like a baseball bat cracking into a watermelon, and you have to wonder how that li'l falcon can destroy a larger duck or pheasant like that and come out unscathed.

When I'm flying my birds I seldom have them anywhere near top speed when they're right near me, but it's still awful impressive to have them whip past you 2-3 feet away while they're doing 75mph or so!

My birds could pass as exotic I suppose, but I don't really consider them to be "pets".  More like hunting partners...

When I was 8 or 10 my friend and I caught two baby skunks.  They were too young to spray and we went around the neighborhood proud as could be knocking on everyone's doors showing them our skunks.  Probably not what I'd choose today.

I'm flying a hybrid female Gyrfalcon / Prairie Falcon this season.  I was flying a female anatum peregrine as well but she was hit by a truck earlier this fall.

I've flown female prairie falcons, redtail hawks, a tiercel goshawk and a kestrel.  I generally trap an immature bird, train it and hunt with it for a season or three, and then release them when they reach breeding age to trap and fly something else.

I'm state and federally licensed/permitted to trap, possess, and hunt with birds of prey.

Does anyone remember who it was that had the pet Octopuss? I remember he went away for like a day and his roommate or girlfriend killed it (by accident?)

So, at 275mph... How do they keep their eyes from ripping out of their face?  :x

Good question actually...  They don't need to worry about their eyes ripping out, but they do need to be worried about particles of debris in the air.  They have nictitating membranes that they flick shut briefly to protect their eyes as they see bits of debris in the air about to collide with their eyes.  They cannot just leave them shut in a dive because while the membrane is somewhat transparent they cannot see through it.  They also have thicker (more viscous) fluid on their eyes so they don't "water" like ours would at that speed.

In addition, they have small nobs of bone in their nares (nostrils) that disrupt the airflow and allow them to breathe at that speed.

Another amazing thing about that speed is that at the bottom of their stoop (dive) they're pulling out and experiencing 25-35 G's.  The fact that they can live through that is amazing in itself, but the fact that they can still move and maneuver under those conditions (often only a few feet above the ground) is insane.  There's really nothing else that compares to it on the planet.  Imagine how helpless a human is comparatively under only a few (>10) G's...
