A Frightening Feast
Or so the story goes, that after a supply run to an Ethiopian village during a famine a team of philanthropists visited the village. Expecting to see the supplies eagerly used up, they bought half a ton more MREs. Much to their surprise, upon arriving at the village they found starving people everywhere. The leader of the group asked the chief whether raiders had stolen their food, he shook his head and asked them to come inside his hut. He brought out some meat and soup, and the philanthropists, though shocked, politely refused, and offered him some MREs instead. As they drew the slender olive drab pouches from their backpacks, the chieftains eyes grew wider and wider. When they offered him one, he put his hand to his mouth and ran out the door. Disappointed, the philanthropists left the village, and on their crate of MREs they wrote:
