Title: F35-B
Post by: ntrudr on January 12, 2012, 10:00:49 AM
Here is something I just recieved.  I am not a fan of VTOL but it is a very nice video.

"This video link is fresh and for the public.  It was made just six weeks ago in the Atlantic, just off Newport News (Hampton Roads), Virginia.

These are the latest sea trials of the F-35B off the USS Wasp.  They were very successful, with 74 VL's and STO's in a three week period.

The media and the program critics had predicted that we would burn holes in the deck and wash sailors overboard, neither of which happened.  You will notice a sailor standing on the bow of the ship as the jet rotates.  That was an intentional part of the sea trials.

No catapult... no hook...  It’s a new world out there!

The shape and scope of warfare – worldwide – just changed.

It kinda look liek a transformer when all the panels open up for the STO lol

Question: Can it take off vertically or can it only land vertically?

More designed for Amphib OPs. The Navy version of F-35, called F35-C, will be the typical large carrier fighter launched with a catapult. It will be larger then USAFs or the USMCs STOVL and have a much larger fuel/ordinance capacity. I honestly dont know if USMC jocks will fly the USN version. In the end its phonetics. Even our Amphib decks are larger then most nations carriers and a carrier is a carrier. But there are major design differences between the F35-STOVL and F35-C.

Nice plane, but I've always thought an upgrade and standardization program would be better for the military.

I mean we've got

The F-22 and F15 as our air superiority fighters

The F-16, 18, and now the F-35 as our multi-role aircraft

And the F-15E as our strike aircraft

F15 STOL/MTD, F35, and the F-15E and we're pretty well covered.

I don't think the F-15 program will be killed any time soon by the F-35, same for the F-16.

It seems to me that we can't afford the F-22, and the F-35 will be right in line for spending cuts.

Just like the B-52, I foresee the current crop of fighters having excellent longevity. Bummer about the Tomcat...

That fast B-1 won't make the cut either. However, we will piss away billions on stealth aircraft that will be obsolete in short order, if they aren't already. (Yes B-2, I'm talking about you.)

Of course it is possible that the massive price tags on modern weaponry factors in development costs of system/airframe upgrades that are surely already in the works...

You guys should read Mace's post in the other F-35B thread, nice to read an input from a player that has real world experience flying fighters.
