I just went to my school's Winter Ball, and though the music was good, I hurt my ears if I tried to get near anyone. It was as loud as someone tearing through rounds on a minigun for the melody, a Bofors 40mm for the bass, and the occasional JATO launch for the screaming and synth. It hurt like crazy, and now I can barely hear anything. Should I tell the organizers about this?

When I went to dances in HS, I always brought earplugs. works like a charm.

At Dulles, when the BAC-111 get's ready to taxi, I find that even full coverage headphone type protection is not enough.

Concerts arent bad...unless your next to the speakers. :lol
BTW Peng, music was meant to be played as loud as possible.

Van Halen back in the day used to be the loudest band on earth my ears still hurt when i think about it , but man it was awesome

Remember that this music was played in a very short room (only one story tall) as opposed to the gym. Also, everyone seemed to be right near the speakers, so I had nowhere else to dance. Being a sissy has nothing to do with it, this isn't like someone twisting your arm. Hearing damage doesn't heal, it's permanent.

I saw Motley Crue last summer and it was by far the loudest show of any type I have ever been to, but it kicked ass :rock :rock

I also think most public/social events have the volume turned up way too far. I went to disney world recently and even after 20 years of military service around loud jet engines and gunfire, I found even the attractions for little kids were way too loud. My 3.5 yr old boy had his hands over his ears in almost every attraction except for the it's a small world ride. Every single other attraction/show was loud enough to hurt his ears even though we were going to the attractions intended at the youngest kids.
I think lots of kids who aren't looking forward to some sort of career and who have parents who don't think about such things end up with damaged hearing well before they turn 20. Either that, or 80% of the population is simply so dim witted that they don't notice that the sound is loud enought to cause hearing damage.
Then again, we don't sit around listening to loud TV all day in our household, so we don't habitually tune out or ignore high volume noise...

I play the bagpipes, in a 30 member band, with 8 snare drums and 2 bass drums... nuff said.
I also play the tuba, in a 3-tuba concert band.
I also (occasionally) play electric bass (poorly) in a cover band.
I'm not quite deaf yet... good sign!! :aok

I've heard that fear and anxiety around loud sounds is a sign of autism...
-
Was into the big dance raves during 89 to 95 ish, still go to one occasionally. Takes me too long to recover now though.
Some of my best psychedelic tinged memories are of my trousers flapping with the base sub.
Felt the tracks banging through my chest and saw guys just standing still upfront of the cabs letting a truly amazing sound rip through them.
Turn it up till your rig starts creaking :aok
-
I is confused...
:S
Are you talking about concerts, trains, or semi trucks???

I wasn't fearful or anxious, just in pain.

At monster Jam they had jet powered quad looking things come out at half time, it was SUPER LOUD and they had 40 foot flames shooting out that back ends

Going down the high way in one of those with the cops chasing after ya, haha awesomeness :rofl
-
Kid, when I went to the dance we didn't even need ears back then. The snow was 10 feet deep and the cars were so loud you heard them through your feet like Helen Keller! :old:
-
Front row in front of EVH was the loudest for me... and I even had earplugs in! :rock
-
Agreed.
The loudness is inversely proportional to the quality of music I've found.

loud music cleanses the soul!
can we be best friends??? :rock
-
:rofl :rofl :rofl This :aok
-
Simple solution. Don't go.
BAM!
-
I had no clue that it would be this loud, and many other kids had the same problem.

Our local band plays fairly loud. Sometimes it's a bit annoying when Ken Mansfield (lead guitar) gets carried away to the point I can't hear my keyboards. Our singer is no longer with us due to personality conflicts, pitch issues, & overall conduct. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o68wyTg5PVY

Yeah, he's not metal enough. Nice stuff tho :rock
-
Thanks. :)
No, Ken isn't metal enough, and quite honestly I wouldn't be playing if he was. We're more of a hard rock outfit.
-
For once I agree with Penguin, all of my school's social events had music that was far too loud to be safe.
-
Agreed.

play this on a surround sound system :aok

The problem with school functions is crappy sound systems operated by people who don't know what they're doing.

we would always bring our own whenever people said PA supplied and we brought our own sound man too. It makes a huge difference and all we had to do was hook a trailer up to the van to bring it.
