Im really considering putting in a Warrent officer packet after this deployment. I've wanted to be a Military pilot ever since i was a kid. I've been checking out the offical WO recruting page, and i have been looking through the application proccess. And there is so much, and i dont even know half of what its asking. If any of you are WO's could you help me out?

I may be wrong but I thought that warrant officers flew rotary wing only.

C-12 Huron (super king air)
Gulfstream C-20 (G-3)
Fairchild C-26 Metroliner
Gulfstream C-37 (G-5)
Cessna UC-35 (citation V)

my options are UH-60 Blackhawk, CH-47 Chinook, OH-56 Kiowa, AH-64 Apache.
-
No CH53?
-
A good friend of mine was a WO. Flew Blackhawks. You'll be in for some long days, but it's well worth it. I'd say go for it.

Yea i was talking with my Platoon SGT yesterday, he said hes gonna help my throw a packet togather.
I'd be happy to fly any of those helicopters, but i really want to fly the Kiowa we use them alot out here when we are on missions, they are really small and can turn on a dime.
-
Not a warrant but am in an aviation bde. We do have warrants flying fixed wing but the majority is rotary wing. The Kiowa is in the process of being phased out by the Apache Longbow. Funny little known fact, the Ch-47 is our fastest. The CH-53 is mostly flown by the Marines and USAF. I have never seen a 53 owned by the army in my almost twenty years. In that time i have a total of six years in aviation units. I am commo though.
Edit: 160th may have the 53s, they have a lot of cool stuff the rest of us do not.

First thing you gotta do is take the FAST (Flight Aptitude Screening Test) :aok
If you fail that, then forget it. I took the Fast, passed it, but never followed through.
I didn't have the A.A. Degree at the time.

Apaches broseph. Baddest chopper known to man.

what is on the AFAST? is it hard? I ordered a study book on that but it hasnt gotten here yet.
-
Not hard, they put up questions about Artificial Horizons, go into understanding of lift,
aerodynamics, computing fuel requirements, vectors, Navigation, etc.

USAF and USMC are phasing them out and trading em for V-22's
here at hurlburt (AFSOC) all 53's are gone for 22's

Spent 2 years at Hurlburt in 1972-73 after my tour in Viet Nam. Crew Chief on UH-1N's with the 20th S.O.S
My memories of Hurlburt?
Sun...heat...more heat. Getting sandblasted while marshalling my bird in for landing or out for takeoff.
Afternoon thunderstorm followed by...sun...heat.
But when the day was over all us guys would hop on our 125 and 250 screamin 2 strokes and head up some dirt roads that lead to beach and the dunes which were all pretty much open spaces back then. We had a ball.
Sorry for the thread hijack :bolt:
-
As a WO he also has the chance to fly the OV10B if I am correct..

College? Get at least an A.A. If you haven't yet, go to the Ed Center.
Get a Miltary skills - College Credit conversion.
I wound up only to establish a residency (4 courses) to get my A.A.
It's probably a requirement now to have at least an A.A.
That being said, maybe you already have degree and I'm blabbering
for nothing, lol. On another note, Go to any Military School you can.
You're 11C? Go to IMLOC/IMPOC (Infantry Mortar Leaders Course).
It's a "Gentlemans" Course. 5 weeks at Benning, staying in Hotel :D
You show up, no wake-ups, formations, etc. International Military students attend also.
Good Luck!
 Oz

nah, i dont have any college. and im a 11B. so far the only school i've done was the Small Land Warfare UAV's course, im certified to fly the PUMA UAS.
-
Go to Pac, borrow their Military Schools Catalog. Find any MOS related school, make a packet.
I did a boatload of Army Correspondence Courses too. Had over 1200 credits.

i'll have to look into that, and i've been trying to do the ACC but AKO wont let me do it

If you havent gone to PLDC get slated to go then BNOC those schools give you good crossover credits. I was able to finish my dergee in 2 years not 4. Another rout, you can change your MOS become a crew chief while you get your schooling. I'm a retired first sergant and it was my job to help my troopers excell.

So, your saying i should do 1 more re-enlistment. and then try to put in for WO? I think its going to be really hard for me to get schools as soon as i get back to Alaska, rumor is they are going to start giving us TRADOC assignments because when we get back we already have 95 new privates waiting for us in my Company alone. and in June-July everyone in my Company as of now will be SPC's and NCOs.
my origonal plan was to start studing the AFAST now. and then when i get back to the rear, put in a packet.

U know Dale Eslinger?
-
the big hurdle is going to be the required collage credits, I dont know if they allow wavers. But you are going to have to reenlist or extend if they do take your packet. Let me check and look at my paperwork, I have to dig it out.
-
CH-53 Sea Stallion is the giveaway. I think the Navy had some in the 1970's and 1980's though primarily a Marine bird. The USAF flew this in Vietnam as the Jolley Green Giant. Few great pictures of this bird evacing other helicopters or planes slung beneath it. If I remember correctly it was also the fastest of all US choppers. Funny, the bigger the chopper the faster it flys.
Best of luck on WO school. I hope this works out for you.

k, i've been looking everywhere and i have seen nothing on a required amount of college credits or anything

Then I would push a packet, do the Fast, get physicals, etc.
A TRADOC assigment is good for career :aok

All you need is high school, go talk with you TOP tell him what you want to do. It looks like it could take up to a year to review your packet, and you will have to reenlist.
-
To apply and get a slot for WOFT you do not need college but it will give you a leg up one the people you compete against for the school slot. The army is in a draw down now so anything you do to put you ahead of your peers will help.
Like I said college is not required to apply but it is required to advance as a warrant.

If i have my private pilots license would that help at all? I am going to finish it up at Fairbanks International as soon as i get back.
-
It will help but not as much as you would think. I would put more emphasis on an AA, BA, or BS. Those will set you apart more.
Do everything possible to get SGT and a slot in WLC. That will help. If you know an Army flight instructor, get a letter of recommendation from them, a CW4 or CW5 will give that letter moore weight. Good luck, do not blow your chance by sitting on your packet.

yea, im really trying to make this go smoothly cause i'll be really really iritated if i dont get accepted when i submit the application. both of them have said they are all for me doing it when i get back. But then again neither of them are warrent officers so i doubt they know how picky this is.
-
Dont count your chain of command short, if they dont know an answer they know where to get the answer. Now this is just my thoughts take it with grain of salt, reenlist as a crew chief do one tour get promoted and get some school. Now you have letters from your pilots on up, pkus your in a related MOS.
