Title: Ninth Tri-Annual Dueling Bracket *SIGN UP HERE*
Post by: BaldEagl on January 15, 2012, 01:09:30 PM
It's time to sign up for BaldEagl's NINTH TRI-ANNUAL ACES HIGH ONE-ON-ONE DUELING BRACKET CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT.

I wondered if I should run the tournament this time or not.  I'm not sure if Ink's ladder is still running or what impact it might have on this event.  In the end I decided I'd post it and see what happens.  If nothing else I wanted to complete the third year.  I can't believe this has gone on that long and I guess the response to this one will determine if we head into a fourth year or not.

Sign up here by stating so clearly and posting your in-game name even if it's the same as your BBs name.  The sign up period will run for two weeks with the opening bracket posted on Sunday, January 29 and updated brackets posted each Sunday thereafter until the tournament is concluded.  You have until 6:00 PM CST/CDT Sunday, January 29 to join the event.  Late entries will not be considered.  If you don't want to join please spread the word in the arenas to those who don't read the BBs.

I encourage players of all skill levels to get involved.  The Dueling Tournament is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're going to get.  The tournament is fun, can be a good learning experience if you want to improve your ACM, most players will willingly put some time in with you before or after the duels if you ask and it's a great way to meet other players in the community.  Take it from me, I lost in the first round the first six or seven of these but I keep coming back because win or lose it's fun.  Nothing gets your adrenaline pumping like hitting icon range with your opponent and exchanging "good lucks" prior to the engagement.

I will periodically post an updated roster in this thread.  Please check in to make sure I haven't made a mistake in your in-game or BBs name or your status in the tournament.

Once sign-up is completed I will start a new thread in the General Discussion forums titled Ninth Tri-Annual Dueling Bracket & Results”.  That's where you'll find your match-ups and post results of your duels.

I made two minor changes to the rules this time:

- All deadlines have ben changed from noon to 6:00 PM CST/CDT.
- Fuel load out is now the players option.

Don't let the rules intimidate you.  It's all about fair play.  Please read and understand the rules (located in the next post).

Finally, I need four volunteers; three regular and one alternate as review committee members.  Some tournaments have been bears for the committee, others not.  Just like the tournament itself, you never know what you're going to get.  Be aware that you must be available to review films within a 24 hour window so both the thread and you're PM's will require daily monitoring at the close of each round.  I'll select four members from all volunteers.  Like last tournament I will step back again this time and leave the decision making to the committee.  I do however, as always, reserve the right to make the final decisions if I believe them to be in the best interest of the tournament.

Before we get to the rules here's the links to all of the prior tournament threads working backwards from the latest:

And, as always, I'm IN!

Good luck to all.

Post by: BaldEagl on January 15, 2012, 01:12:07 PM
·   Setting up the Bracket

-   Brackets will be determined by random draw of names produced by a random number generator in MS Excel.
-   If the number of players exceeds a full round I will work them into the bracket although they will have to fly one more round than other players.  They will be chosen randomly and disbursed evenly through pre-selected slots in the bracket to achieve balance at the nearest bracket root(s).
-   If a player changes their in-game or BBs name during the tournament they must either post that change in the bracket and results thread or PM me with the change.
-   The initial bracket will be posted on Sunday, January 29 and each Sunday thereafter until a winner has been determined.

·   General Tournament Rules

-   Duels must be arranged between the players by PM, IM, e-mail or other means to take place by 6:00 PM CST/CDT Sunday following each bracket update (6 days).
-   Duels will be best of three until the quarterfinal round.  The quarterfinal and semifinal rounds will be best of five with the final round to determine a champion being best of seven.
-   First duel plane selection will be assigned using a random number generator to select from all available fighter and fighter/attack aircraft (except the Me163, Me262 and WWI aircraft).  This will be done individually for each set of duelers.
-   During the elimination rounds the loser of each duel selects the aircraft for the next duel.  This allows the loser to pick his/her best aircraft to get back into contention and if it goes three rounds each player will have had one plane selection.  From the quarterfinals forward the player who is behind in the series chooses the next duel aircraft.  This means they could choose as many as three times consecutively in the quarterfinal or semifinal rounds or four times consecutively in the final round to try to get back into contention (they lose the first and second duels then win the third making it 1-2 and get to choose for the third time for instance).  If the series becomes tied at any point then the loser of the last duel chooses.
-   All duels will take place in the DA canyon area.
-   All duelists will fly in F1 view mode (in-cockpit).
-   All duels will be player’s choice of fuel load out, gun package and convergence.  Firing off ammo prior to engagement is allowed (it’s impractical to review everyone’s films for violations in the early rounds).
-   All merges will be guns cold (no firing until you have passed your opponent's 3/9 line).
-   All merges will be co-alt at 7.5K until within icon range at which point a merge break can begin.  Players should expeditiously climb to altitude and observe a 7.5K hard ceiling and a 7.0K hard floor prior reaching icon range.
-   Anything goes after the initial merge.
-   Once one player has been shot down and the other receives a kill message the duel ends.  There is no need to land.

·   Posting Results

-   The losing player will post in this thread after the duel series in the following format:

§   Plane - Winner
§   Plane - Winner
§   Plane - Winner (if needed)

-   The loser posting is a means to verify that the results are uncontested.  If the loser hasn't posted by the deadline then the winner may post the results but they will be deemed contested and films will be required to verify the win.
-   This information must be posted by no later than 6:00 PM CST/CDT (as appropriate) Sunday following the posting of the updated bracket so that I can get the brackets updated and re-posted.

·   Special Circumstances Affecting the Outcome of a Duel

-   In the case of a draw (both run out of fuel for instance) that duel will be re-fought using the same aircraft.
-   In the case of a collision:
o   If only one player collides (only one gets the collision message) the duel continues.
o   If both players collide (both get the collision message) the duel immediately ends and will be re-started in the same planes.
-   Ditching or bailing constitutes forfeiture of the duel.
-   The intent is for players to remain in close proximity to one another (2-3K max).  That said if at any time the players lose icon range on one another the duel ends immediately and will be re-started using the same planes.  This should allow a dueler to simply turn away from a runner to nullify the duel.
-   If an uninvited third party interrupts the duel the duel is immediately ended and will be re-started using the same plane.  The dueling participants may move to another mutually agreed upon set of fields in the DA in this instance.
-   If a player experiences technical and/or equipment issues the duel will continue.  After the duel that player will be allowed fifteen minutes to correct such issues and re-log to complete any remaining duels in the series.  If he does not or is unable to re-log within 15 minutes he will lose any remaining duels by default.
-   If a player disco’s the duel will be re-fought in the same planes as soon as the discoing player re-logs.  If he does not or is unable to re-log within 15 minutes he will lose the duel series by default.  A second disco by the same player in a duel series will result in forfeiture of the remaining duels in that series.

·   Forfeitures

-   If a player does not show within 15 minutes of the arranged time they forfeit the series.  In that case the winner by default must post a message confirming the arranged duel time or otherwise verify that a duel had been arranged.
-   If a duel cannot be arranged between two players each player will have a chance to post the circumstances in the Bracket and Results thread prior to the posting deadline.  If only one player posts and it is clear that they are making an attempt to arrange their duel then that player will advance, provided their post was at least 48 hours prior to the round closing deadline. If both players post and it is clear that the issue lies with only one player then the player not at fault will advance.  If it is unclear which player is at fault, if neither player posts, or if a single player posts inside the 48 hour window then a random draw will determine which player advances.  In the case of neither player posting, no player will be allowed to advance more than one round via forfeit.

·   Filming

-   Both players will film all duels from take-off in case of a dispute.  These films must be saved until at least 6:00 PM on the Tuesday following the duel or until 48 hours after the end of any granted extension in case of a dispute.  If a dispute arises then the films must be saved until such dispute is settled.
-   From the quarterfinal round forward results must be verifiable therefore films to substantiate the win must be posted by the winning player for all duels from that round forward.  This means only films of the wins must be posted but it’s preferred that all films are posted.  This also allows for film study by those hoping to improve their skills.  Failure of the winning player to post substantiating films in these rounds will result in the win being awarded to that player’s opponent who must then post all of their films.  Failure of the opponent to post films within 24 hours of such a determination will result in the original winner being reinstated.
-   Films may be posted in any round if both participants agree.

·   Disputes

-   Each player has the opportunity to review films of their duels for potential rules violations.  If a player suspects a rules violation they can petition the review committee via PM.  Both regular and alternate committee members, the tournament administrator and the opposing player must be copied on the petition (the review committee members, alternates and administrator are listed in the roster).  This petition must be filed by the regular deadlines.  The player must include a posting of their own films with the petition along with a description of what they believe the rules violation to be.  An initial determination will be made within 24 hours of the petition.  If the review committee finds sufficient evidence to further their investigation a committee spokesperson will contact the opposing player for their films of the duels.  These films must be submitted within 24 hours of the committee's request or the duel(s) in question will be forfeit by that player.  The review committee will then make a final determination no later than 24 hours after receiving those films.  The review committee may overturn posted results.  If a clean determination of a winner cannot be made the review committee will determine an appropriate course of action which could include a rematch, a random draw or the expulsion of one or both players from the tournament.  These stated actions are not intended to limit the actions that the review committee might recommend.  The review committee's determination will be final.  In any case a final determination will be posted by no later than noon Wednesday.  For the advancing player and their opponent the normal 6:00 PM Sunday deadline will still apply.  Because this could delay both the winner's and his/her next opponent's ability to arrange their next duel it is in the best interest of everyone that the players reach an agreeable conclusion to their duels on their own.

·   Rules Violations

-   Violations of the official tournament rules as stated could constitute grounds for expulsion from the tournament.
-   Any player caught breaking the rules twice in any tournament will be automatically ejected from the tournament.

Just a question. How will you know whether or not the other guy is using F3 mode or F1? (This is taking place in the DA, no?).

EDIT: Forgot to mention, add me in!

I'm not a film making expert, but the few times that I did use it, I noticed it didn't matter. I filmed in the MA, but I could use F3 in the film viewer. So if I film in the DA, how can you tell whether or not I used F3?

First, when you change views while recording it is recorded and will show in viewer.

Yes, that's happened several times in the past but why not fly?  It looks like I'll have plenty of volunteers so I'll decide the composition of the committee this weekend.  Being in isn't a prerequisite.

It's been a week and we're up to 37 competitors.  With a week to go I will close the bracket to additional entries at 64 players, therefore we have 27 roster spots left to fill.

I see several new names with us again this time around.  If you've never played in the bracket give it a try.  It's like crack; once you start you can't stop.  If you don't regularily participate in dueling in the game you're missing an adrenaline filled rush; the kinds of fights that can leave you with sweaty palms and white knuckles.  Just ask any of the many listed below (including myself) who have been in many or even all of the tournaments.

If you're worried you'll lose don't.  By the end all but one of us will lose.  It's about meeting new players, having fun, watching film afterward (I love watching my fights afterward) and learning.  Egos are set aside at the door so if you want help ask.

There's still several I expected to see from prior tournaments who haven't signed up yet.  What are you guys doing?  Playing hard to get?   :lol

The review committee is set.  I can't believe TC didn't volunteer.   :(  He's been on the committe for every one of the prior eight tournaments.  TC, I'm holding open an honorary spot for you.  Krup, I placed you as the alternate only because you were the last to volunteer.  I'll still need you to watch the results thread and to respond as a regular in case another member misses it.

So here's the current roster.  As always if I got something wrong let me know.

Knowing the outcome when I sign up, it is still nice to have decent, clean and fun 1v1. I have always had fun and the opponents have always been courteous.

Two more days to join! (Not counting today) This is a great opportunity to meet players you wouldn't otherwise and have a good clean fight while you're at it. Don't worry about how good you are, I've only made it past the first round once  :o. The nature of the bracket is most are knocked out in the first round, nothing wrong with that. And chances are you'll get some pointers and critiques from the guy you lost to, which can only make you better. I don't fly the bracket to win, I fly to get better, and hopefully win a later one when I'm finally good enough (if BE will still be running these when hell freezes over  :D)

OK guys.  Close to the last chance.  Trying to fill 21 more roster spots by Sunday at 6:00 PM CST at which point I'll post the opening bracket.  I don't think we'll fill all those but it would be nice to give more people an opening round fight rather than a bye.

All players are welcome.  It takes about 20 minutes out of your week and you can do it on your own timetable.

Due to the low turnout for this event I'm thinking about a minor change.

The way things stand now 22 people will fight in elimination round one while 21 people will take first round byes.  In order to keep more people playing during the first week but also not push byes later into the tournament I could match almost everyone (an even number of players leaving a maximum of one person with a week one bye) then randomly select from among the first round losers to advance to fill spots in round two.  Not only would I randomly select them but I'd randomly re-place them in round two so they'd likely get a different opponent in round two.  At our current roster level that means 10 of 21 week one losers would get a second chance.

Thoughts?

No second chance.

Fight or die.

(I usually die in round one, and would feel like a bum if I got a second chance.)

EDIT: It is my understanding that the purpose of the tourney is to see who the best pilot involved is, not to see how long it can be dragged out.

While I see what Melvin is saying, though my understanding of the purpose of the tourney is to arrange duels with people that you would. Ot normaly have them. The title part is the bonus.

I also know how it feels to get a bye in round one and it really offering a second chance to random players is no different than offering an easy round to random players via a bye.

I personally like your idea to fill the slots BE. GO for it.

I like it!  It gives guys like me a better chance of getting a second round of fights!  The tourney is about fighting, byes aren't fighting.

Not enough players? Use a smaller bracket.

You want to give losers second chances? Start a loser's bracket.

Please don't give random losers another chance at the title. I mean really, doesn't this tourney usually end up with enough drama and delay as it is?

If I remember what BE said several tourneys ago, the brackets can only be increased by multiplying the numbers by 2 or divided in half. Anything in between would create byes.

Think of the "second chance" guys as the random wild cards.  :D

None of this is for the purpose of creating second chances but to eliminate byes. At least that is the way I take it from BE's post.

If we got 43 players why not make a single side bracket making 21 first rds with 1 bye and then the remaining 22 players you could split into a double bracket making 10 rds with 2 byes and then you'll be on course to the final.   That would turn 21 byes into just 3

Is fighting a guy who lost a first round duel to a top stick that big of a problem to you?

Honestly, with a random first round seed, you are bound to get some first round losers who are more talented then some of the first round winners...

It wouldn't work that way.  If I paired everyone in the first round (44 players) 22 would advance.  The initial bracket is 64 slots with one side being 32 slots or 16 duels so you'd have to use both sides.  In the next round there's 32 slots (16 duels) total for 22 players, then 16 slots (8 duels) for 11 players then 8 slots (4 duels) for 6 players (quarterfinals) then 4 slots (2 duels) for 3 players (semifinals) then 2 slots for 2 players.  That means someone would be getting buys in the quarter and semi-final rounds.  I don't want that to happen.

If that loser gets a second shot at the title then it is an enormous problem for me.

It's not how I perceive a combat bracket working. No points for second place and all that...

I see what your saying if you done the byes in the second rd with 44 players their would be just 10 byes leaving a remaining 16 players but I'm sure you'd like to get the byes over first rd.  I think your first idea would be fine too.

Last tourney we did byes, I got one. I'm good for either first round byes or a two-loss system. For most fights a two-loss doesn't change much. We have a dozen ubber jousters in here and we could do a ten-loss system and the only thing that will change is boredom of killing baby seals ten times. Two sounds about right. For most a two-loss system adds to the excitement, for the ubber they have one more boring match before the real tourney begins.

I'm glad BldEgle does this, sad I defaulted last tourney. Spice it up!

Hey Boo, I'd just like to state for the record that no fights I've had, babyseal or ace, have been boring for me in any of the brackets thus far. Every encounter is a chance to meet an old friend or a new one and any chance to fly against another real person on a game is exciting and fun for me.
