Note* They're blurred
-
What so bad about this, if their places were swapped the bad guys would have done worse, besides they deserve to be pissed on in my opinion
-
I would have done the same thing as the troops, and I salue them for what they did. Do you think THEY wouldn't have done the same thing to the bodies from the towers? I saw a vid of some ANA blokes absolutely desecrating a few taliban bodies. I feel their anger. Was it right? Hell no, that's way, WAY F*cked up, but I feel them and I think what they did just about sums up a LOT of emotions about our enemy.
-
Well, by the way that they execute our troops, drag them off and torture them, I don't see any reason why not to.
-

I still remember the video where they beheaded the captive soldier.
They don't follow the 'rules of war', why should we?

Because if we let it get out of control we to become animals like them

Why can't we all love each other like bronies do :bhead

It was a rhetorical question.
-
The Marines that fought in the Pacific in WWII would be laughing at the uproar. Times & wars sure have changed.
-
America's supposed to be holding the light for people to follow... We should be ashamed of ourselves because as you can see by the replies this not only acceptable but encouraged... I mean wtf. What if that was your kid was getting pissed on.
-
Why can't we all love each other like bronies do :bhead
:rofl At the current rate of popularity skyrocketing the whole world will love MLP by season 4, my friend said I was gay for watching it and he's on of those death metal gangster kids, I forced him to watch an episode and now he's a brony within just one episode

They ARE getting pissed on, by politicians. Every. Single. Day.

Disgraceful, but not inexplicable. I'd wager that being out there in the sticks, seeing your buddies ripped to shreds by IED's, mortars, and snipers would leave anyone itching for revenge. It doesn't make it right though; the fight was over, and be they military, civilian, or space alien, it doesn't matter, peeing on dead bodies is not only wrong, but also rather creepy. Those guys need some mental help- getting off by urinating on a corpse with your buddies isn't a sign of a healthy mind.

War is hell. :salute
-
The healthy human mind doesn't wake up every morning thinking that today might be it's last day alive either. War is not healthy. Pissing on them was probably their therapy and their revenge. Wrong, yes, but understand why.
They weren't 'getting off' on it. Yes, they will probably need therapy and will have PTSD, but in an insane environment, people do insane things. It is war. The fight for them is NOT over until they are out of the country, and even then many still have to fight PTSD, or fight with rehabilitation after losing limbs. Sometimes their fight is NEVER over.

Says the little boy safe at home. Was it right no it wasn't, but there's only one person who posted in thread that I know of who has been in that situation and it's not you. Don't pass judgement on their mental condition until you've marched their shoes. Then thank your lucky stars you don't march in their shoes.
-
You won't piss on dead bodies of innocent people, I would piss on body's on non innocent people, but hey thats just me
-
If in that situation those people were just trying to kill me, to take my life and deprive my ability to see my future and everything i know and love.
Pissing on someone who was just trying to kill me 5 minutes ago is just my way of saying "#$&^ you, i am alive" :salute

To hell with it, I saw in the paper the other day, a couple of friends saw it too and went "Wow, that's **** up." I stare at them :huh.
For reasons already explained here.

Taking a leak on the enemy dead... Why not.
Recording it... Moronic.

I understand why they did it, the war warped their minds, or perhaps they were mentally ill since birth, or early life experiences made their minds dark and twisted. Whatever the reason, they are careening ever closer to becoming a danger to others in their unit and the population of the area. If their emotional release (getting off) is urinating on the corpses of dead adversaries, then they have lost it. I agree with you about the 'war never ending' for many, though.

If I marched in their shoes. I'd likely become them. This isn't a question of manliness (a quality that is already difficult to define) or experience, but rather of recognizing the sharp mental damage inflicted upon soldiers as such, and not as 'normal functioning'.

No they aren't. They are normal kids. So they disrespected the bodies of the enemy who was trying to kill them? Of course they hate the enemy.
They shouldn't have done it and definitely shouldn't have filmed it because in this day and age, there are too many people just chomping at the bit trying to find something to be outraged by.
It's a PR blunder, but it doesn't make them psychopaths.

define innocent in this context.
Different for every person. And way too complicated to type it all out without writing a novel.
You might say innocent means not killing another human being purposely. But what if it was self defense? What if that person thinks what they're fighting for is right? Who are you to tell them otherwise? ("you" meaning other people).
Some deity gave us the power to think for ourselves, and there's always going to be some one disagreeing with another.
-
You don't do it because it hurts the mission and it puts your fellow Marines in more danger.
-
Imagine all the wonderful footage we'd have of "atrocities" if they only had smart/cellphone cameras in WW1, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, etc..
This isn't anything new, folks.... These kids just happened to have gotten caught by their own inability to think far enough ahead of the game..
This has nothing to do with being a soldier.. It is representative of how dumb a majority of "young adults" are these days.. God bless 'em for being over there, either way.. :rock
May be dumb, but at least they have a balls..

... and bladders! :rofl

Sadly dehumanizing the 'enemy' is as old as war itself. Not the first time it's happened, nor will it be the last. I'd suggest reading "With the Old Breed" by Eugene Sledge. It's the first thing I thought of when I saw this stuff. He talks about it and how a friend who was a medic stopped him from going down that road. In retrospect he said, the medic helped him hang on to some of his humanity. And as a survivor of both the Peleliu and Okinawa invasions, he is more then qualified to speak of it.
That being said, the blood thirsty keyboard commando's here need to think first before typing. Unless you've been there, and this includes me, we're not qualified to judge either for or against what happened.

Im in Afghanistan right now, i lived with the ANP for a few months, you should see how they treat Captured Taliban...

Sorry mate my ancestors evolved, nobody gifted me the power to think except them.
All I'm pointing out is Einsteins laws of relativity. Innocent depends on your point of view, and to some 18 year old kid in the hill tribes of afghanistan pictures of some stereotypical yanks urinating on his mates body isn't not going to help the cause is it. He doesn't have access to the internet, a good education, the AH BBS, CNN, or Fox news. But you can be sure such pictures will be circulated. All he knows is what he's told - that Amerikans are evil and here's proof.
And who's to say those corpses weren't kids any different, who thought they were fighting the evil occupiers in their country?
One mans terrorist is another mans freedom fighter.

great thread :rofl
really interesting to see the comments here as opposed to some of the discussions about this I've seen on other American forums...the Aces High community really is something special
-
What they did, I can umderstand, but if I was their platoon sergeant, i would rip them apart. We as Soldiers or Marines must conduct ourselves better and cleaner then our enemy. I remember one insurgent break down and start crying in the TMC when he realized we were not treating him only to better torture him. He helped our cause a lot after that.
We separate ourselves from them by our actions. We have a morale standard, they do not. By their actions, they put the lie to their "Holy" war.

Ya gotta go when ya gotta go.

Better to take it out on the enemy than each other.

Now the shoe is on the other foot, eh? When the marines engage in dehumanization, then it is a question of necessity. However, if the Taliban commits acts of dehumanization, then it is a question of character. If you want to argue moral relativity, then do so throughout your opinion. It is either acceptable for anyone to mistreat, dehumanize, execute, or torture their adversaries on the battlefield or it is not.
Furthermore, in the case of the World Wars, especially World War II, there were well codified laws governing the treatment of POW's, civilians, etc. Breaking those laws is a war crime, and each and every person who committed such crimes deserves punishment (and if mentally damaged, rehabilitation).

Just a reminder of what they did. IMO, when someone does this to you, humanization is thrown out the window, Sorry.
-
If so, then anything a marine's adversary does to him is OK, in your view. Are you REALLY sure about that? I have problem if you feel that way, but don't hold a double standard. Also, the Twin Towers attacks have little link with those fighters. It is unlikely that those kids had ever encountered, much less consorted with the organization responsible for the attacks.

Hmmmm Taliban responsible for the Twin Towers and who are they urinating on??? Taliban fighters?? Guilty by association.

Yep.

Penguin I am all for your free speach rights, but your way off when you put down our service members. I stand proud of my 20 year in the army, and if you think peeing on dead bodies is horrible you set really low standards. Iv watched a HUMVEE blown a hundred feet in the air and listened to the screams ove my buddies burnning to death. I have done and seen things in combat that would have you in the fetal position sucking your thumb. So here I sit just like many times before, I make some coffee and light a cigarette and say "its better to be pissed off than pissed on". Red 4 out.
-
:salute :salute :salute :salute to all soldiers first off. I have never been in the military, I have never been in their shoes, but I do remember the video of them beheading our guy over there. my dad was in vietnam, he has told me some things, but other things he says he wont tell anyone, because of what they did over there. But in the same sentence THEY did the same things to OUR guys also. so war is war, just my 2cents

You really don't know when to stop do you?
These people you're calling "mentally ill", are giving YOU the rights to speak. Those people you believe shouldn't be pissed on, have been cutting soldiers up into bite size pieces. They don't care about anything, they've used their children as weapons; can you even imagine the horror these soldiers go through everyday?
Before you say something stupid, because i know it's a bit of a habit for you, sit down, breath and thank god you're at home.

Penguin you've already violated the portion of wisdom that says it's better to be thought an idiot than to open ones mouth and prove it is true.
Now it is time to follow another bit of wisdom that says when you find yourself in a hole it is best to stop digging.
All tongue in cheek aside, you really do not have a perspective regarding mental health, conduct in combat or even barracks life experience. It is fine to deplore the act but it is folly to sit in judgement of those whose experience you cannot fathom any more than a person totally blind from birth can comprehend the color orange. Rather than sit on your mount olympus and cast judgement on the individuals from your vast store of experience in life, you should hold your comments to the minimum.
Combat, war, whatever you call, it is not logical, not glorious, not fun, not sane and not easy to deal with day in and day out. There are no non casualties in combat. Everyone takes some kind of wound mentally if not physically.
The act is not good because it does nothing to help end the conflict and will instead feed the propaganda machine, building more resistance to completing the conflict and getting our troops home. That is the single one thing that is the most wrong about it. A secondary negative to it is that it tends to lower the support our troops need to continue the conflict our politicians have been unable to solve any other way.
In some ways the men and women in WW2, especially in the Pacific, had it more difficult than our troops do in the 'stan and irag. They would understand the act but also know it is a result of the circumstances rather than a problem in character. Someday you may understand but I would not wish the experiences on you that would give you that understanding.

Have you even read the laws of war? They cover far more than you think, such as POW treatment, acceptable collateral damage, lawful vs. unlawful combatants, etc. If you are truly for shooting civilians, torturing captured soldiers to death, and expelling the populations of conquered countries from their homes in order to make way for one's own, then be open about it.
You really don't know when to stop do you?

The last time I checked, we shot first in 1991. The odds of those insurgents being terrorists is very low, considering the fact that it took this video to bring their deaths to light. If they were really terrorists bent on destroying the US, the media would have been all over it since day 1, pee or no pee. Also, even if they were terrorists, it is unlikely that they could really take over the US. It would be the 18th century all over again, and only by luck did the conditions needed for a single federated America come to be.
Penguin you've already violated the portion of wisdom that says it's better to be thought an idiot than to open ones mouth and prove it is true.

Regarding the fact that war being bad making it more difficult to convince people to fight one is a matter of politics. So is the 'propaganda machine' you speak of. I won't discuss those as a matter of not breaking the rules.
Thus barring those thorny subjects, we can proceed into whether those men are mentally ill. First you said that my lack of combat experience prevents me from arguing that those men are sick. However, it does not take a genius or fellow soldier to realize that peeing on dead bodies is not a sign of a healthy mind. In a self-contradictory way, you then argued that all soldiers become that way. However, that in and of itself is judgement, and also relates back to the thorny issue of popular support mentioned above.
Its not ok for us to do that to them, but its ok for them to do that for us?
I guess the man their pissing on that killed 7 of their brothers and fellow soldiers is innocent?
You are partially correct. If you hold that one side may pee on the other's dead, then you also hold that the other side may do likewise unto the first.
Can we agree that 9 out of 10 americans would have pissed on em too?
Even all your friends jumped off a bridge, it's still not a good idea to jump off a bridge.

They are dead i'm not, thats a cause of celebration, with no cake they thought pissing on em would have the same effect

Penguin, by all means, if you don't stand behind the troops and support them, please step in front of them. You're a traitor for trying to give any sort of respect to terrorists.
We didn't fire any first shot you dimwit, Iraq INVADED Kuwait, we not only helped Kuwait, we took a dictator out of Iraq.
You think the laws of war apply? They don't apply to these people, they BEHEADED an American soldier, and you still try to defend them.
Jumping off a bridge? That doesn't even apply to what Raptor was saying.

I have to agree Penguin, humans or not the terrorists are animals that need to be put down with no respect granted to their lives, if you had the chance to show them respect in person they wouldn't hesitate to kill you or take you prisoner, but maybe you like that idea

Have you even read the laws of war? They cover far more than you think, such as POW treatment, acceptable collateral damage, lawful vs. unlawful combatants, etc.
You need to read them more closely. As they currently fight, the Taliban/Insurgents aren't afforded protection by the Geneva conventions. If we choose to afford them protection, that's a choice we make, but we could summarily execute each one we've captured and be legally within the definitions of the Geneva protections.
Stupid to film it and run the risk of it getting posted on You Tube, but absolutely understandable, and I'll sleep just fine tonight knowing that my fellow Marines are pissing on dead Taliban bodies. Irony is defined by getting spun up over something that happens to a body after it has just been killed.

Agree on every point! Good post Stoney, simple and to the point.

Was it wrong? Yeah, it probably was. Should there be this much attention afforded to it??? No way.
It is really friggin sad when the media takes charge to get these marines some punishment. War crimes??? :rofl Not quite.
The absolute worst of it all was the fact that the marines recorded it. AND, secondly whomever sent this video out should be slapped, then whomever turned this video in to the "authorities" ought to be hung, drawn, and quartered. Shame on them!
OK... next topic. This one needs to be put to rest and let die.

then why are soldiers going to prison for executing wounded?
Semp

I'll let you work that out :)

What wasn't shown was, prior to the start of the film, the body's started to "spontaneous combust". The Marines , being compassionate, caring individuals, attempted to extinguish the flames before the flames spread to nearby buildings.

The headline should be "Marines help prevent forest fires".

Wow just wow. So the Taliban invade Kuwait huh? :headscratch:
Re-read his post. He thinks we started this war against them, they were the ones who came over to American soil and murdered thousands.
EDIT: He's talking about Iraq being terrorists, and the Gulf War had nothing to do with that.

Do you ever brush your teeth? Whenever you type/speak the great many of us here in these forums wince.
You may "call it like you see it", but the thing is you do not see it all. Once you mature and learn that life isn't what the picture shows but rather what the picture doesn't show you will be a lot further ahead. Until you truly understand what is serious and what is not, and learn to put all things in life on a scale and gauge it accordingly, then maybe you will hold fast your tongue and be wary of what you say. Until then, keep reinforcing all the labels you have earned. :aok

Are American soliders actively informed of the rules of the Geneva Convention? Desecrating the bodies of the dead is against the rules our country agreed upon. Okay so maybe it was questionable "desecration", but for God's sake, why would you film it? Let it be another lesson, as if there aren't a million other similar lessons out there in our technological age, if you don't want someone else to see something, don't film it.
It has to be incredibly difficult to "respect" your enemy that obviously deserves no respect, but when you are representing our country, you must be held to a higher, almost non human, standard. And I'm glad that the vast majority of our serviceman attain this high standard. It's just a shame and entirely unfair that a simple video of one snap shot, one moment, a few soldiers in a moment of weakness, can demonize our entire military and mission over there.
-
Re-read his post. He thinks we started this war against them, they were the ones who came over to American soil and murdered thousands.
You are, generally, using a "them" brush that is very much overly broad. Some, many of whom are now pleasantly dead, did attack us. I don't think one can reasonably lay that attack at the feet of most of the stupid Taliban fighters, many of whom would have been kids when that happened.
-
Thats true Karnak but there continued suport of the ones is.

Freaking phone sorry for messed up post.

penguin maybe you need to go watch some beheading vids to get a dose of what THEY DO TO our guys. they have NO respect for any life at all, therefore I have no respect for them.

I agree, they are as barbaric as it gets. Stoning would be even worse.

The Afghans attacked NY on 9/11? The bastards! A a date which will live in infamy, like when the Germans attacked Pearl Harbor!

Keep up the fine work over there, ladies and gentlemen. :salute
(I don't see us dragging their naked bodies through the streets on public displays, hanging them from the main span on the largest bridge in town, or leaving a mutilated/disembowled/decapitated corpse in some canal or ditch to be found later - daily. I only see one miniscule issue here, I'm hearing a lot of noise, and returning to sender the indifference.)
-
The Afghans did that? I didn't even know they had a bridge.

Please don't steer this conversation toward patriotism- I'm not in the mood to get banned. All questions of loyalty, morality, and politics aside, though, the US brought a military force into the middle eastern region for whatever reason it deemed sufficient. I will not comment further on that topic.
@bab what they do is wrong, but it doesn't justify any wrongdoing of our own.

They are elite soldiers, Marine snipers.
"Honor requires each Marine to exemplify the ultimate standard in ethical and moral conduct. Honor is many things; honor requires many things. A U.S. Marine must never lie, never cheat, never steal, but that is not enough. Much more is required. Each Marine must cling to an uncompromising code of personal integrity, accountable for his actions and holding others accountable for theirs. And, above all, honor mandates that a Marine never sully the reputation of his Corps."
Just because the enemy does 'bad' things, it doesn't mean you should also. It only levels you to their level.
So much for the moral superiority the USA claims.

Oh really? Should we mention Abu Ghraib? Or perhaps this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khalid_El-Masri ? US hands are far from clean.
A lot of people in this thread view things view stars-and-stripes tinted glasses. I doi not like the taliban, al qaeda or saddams regime one iota. And I fully support the invasions into both Iraq and Afghanistan. But I find it distasteful in their view of some poor afghan kid recruited into the taliban as some sort of animal.
There's also a scary stereotype the rest of the world perceives being exhibited here in the lack of knowledge about who is fighting whom and for what reasons (not to mention a complete cluster-**** of the facts).

Jack Hensley was beheaded by the Taliban? That's impressive! It's a long way to walk from Afghanistan to Iraq.

Penguin, a big part of justice is equal judgement upon all, don't judge thyself less you be judged, etc.. However, justice is said to be blind for this reason, because it doesn't always see everything clearly when taking weight of arguements (the scale) and casting judgement (the sword). People are always screaming at the one who is blind, pleading for clarity by them to be seen.
You can't justify.
In laughable comparison, I'll put $5 on someone in your own state (and likely every other one) in the past week who probabley urinated and/or defecated on a live, living, concsious, homeless or mentaly challenged American citizen - but isn't facing a fraction of the challenges and troubles ahead facing these Marines, who did probabley an otherwise outstanding job. You have much to learn and better things to waste with your time than persuing justice on these "heathens", Penguin. (tounge-n-cheek) Don't worry, have faith in your country and justice system - they'll be tried and judged, serve their punishment, and their records will forever show that unlike the majority over there, they were bad soldiers who acted unprofessionaly and discourtious.
<snip>
Same responce - you're seeking the metaphorical figure for justice in this world that doesn't wear a blindfold. The scale is off-balance, it always will be. But do, please, keep screaming at the blind lady to drop the sword decisevley and swiftly.
For starters in prooving my point (and how much hot air you're pumping through your own bellows), just with the examples you gave above, most of those who were wronged in those instance are alive and free now to seek justice for themselves from those who wronged them, and they can.
-

You do know, people who are idiots and who have absolutley no clue what they're doing, will borrow/steal/impersonate the name of idiots that have a vague clue about what they're doing, just to improove their street credential?
No, you know what, you're right, lets just ignore the demographics and lessons learned out of Sotuh Central for the last half century after less than a decade of playing in a giant sandbox, clearly this is another government conspiracy, because obviously thugs don't get killed acting like and calling themselves bigger and badder thugs.

Stop with the abu grhab reference, that was nothing more than humiliating a bunch of fediean malitia. It wasn't torture, worse stuff goes on at collage frat houses. But in this political correct world the good are bad and the bad are saints. And to go to war, to fight, to take someones life that is trying to take yours you don't do it with compassion and hating yourself. You do it with malice with intent to totally destroy that person and you do it over and over again not because you like to but, and it really boils down to it him or me.
And I for one don't give a rats fricking bellybutton what the rest of the world "thinks about the US" because it means nothing, when they need help who do they come to. There good friend the US.

You mean the US soldiers cut off heads? Limbs? Beat them to within an inch of their lives? Nah, what happened there is not even worth mentioning. If the Iraqis did those things, then it isnt on our plate. FWIW, I'm not condoning such behavior, but I know what is serious and what isn't.

Oh wait... Were not.
Terrorists attacked, they're hiding in Iraq and Afghanistan.

You are truly naive. Do you REALLY think they are going to tell you the nitty-gritty??? Wake up, jr. You are not going to truly know unless you are THERE, so instead understand that you need to step back and understand that you truly can't grasp the entire picture. You need to stop judging by *your* standards, but first you need to realize that you are in no position to judge, period.
Amen.

The last time I checked, we shot first in 1991.
That pretty much does it for me.
You obviously feel that there was some justification for the 9-11 attacks on our nation.
You obviously see little distinction between a people that make effort to avoid civilian casualties and one that deliberately targets civilians.
I'll never understand this "Blame America First" mindset, particularly coming from an American, but I know when to walk away from it.

Wow. Just wow.
Let me explain...
The Taliban = official government of Afghanistan before the USA invaded
Al Qaeda = terrorists, operating in Afghanistan under the nose of the Taliban government. Did not operate out of Iraq though there were rumours of an Al Qaeda camp but nothing was every proven.
Iraq = country that invaded Kuwait under the leadership of Saddam Hussein. Saddam was said to hate Al Qaeda (note that Saddam was not a fan of fundamentalist groups).
You would not find Taliban in Iraq.
You would not find people claiming to be Taliban in Iraq.

This is roadkill. This sort of thing has always been and will always be a part of war. I'm sure it's not the worst thing that's been caught on tape over there. It's all about what gets out and why. This is just part of the set up for the next roadkill war.

Tbolt, You have to understand he is judging from the vast knowledge and experience gained by living in the US and being a teenager. In short he really thinks he has perspective from the position that most teens, including us at that age, think they really know something or almost everything. It allows him to cherry pick, ignore comments and rant from a position of superiority.
He thinks the rest of us are :old: and therefore of no consequence in spite of the experience(s) life have provided.
