Title: HTC Inspire will not connect to PC
Post by: chaser on January 16, 2012, 11:42:25 PM
I'll start a new thread since this is a completely different topic. Basically it's what the title says. Used to, when i plugged in a usb cable to my phone I could access my phone through my computer. Now my computer doesn't even detect that it's been plugged in, however, it does still charge off of a computer. I've been looking through out the internet and have found that this is a VERY common problem with the HTC Inspire. But from what I've read HTC will do absolutely NOTHING to address the issue. I've tried several things that have worked for other people and still haven't fixed mine.

What I've tried:

• Restarting the phone
• Removed SD card and reinserted
• Removed battery, SD card, and SIM card for 30 seconds then replaced all three
• Made a copy of the SD card on my pc (using a SD card reader) then formated the SD card
• Turned off fast boot
• Made sure "ask when connected" was checked
• Made sure to use an HTC brand USB cable

None of the above worked. Does anyone here know any other things to try?

Also for anyone who hasn't seen the other thread it's an HTC Inspire running Android 2.3.3 for the OS.

Go into settings >> connect to pc and make sure default connection type is set to usb tethering.

I actually haven't started the tethering thing yet. I'm trying to mount it as a disk drive so I don't have to take the SD card out everytime I want to put pictures on my PC.

However, I did try changing it to USB tethering and the computer still didn't detect the phone.

Try the disc drive setting.  I always just pull the card to move stuff around.  The inspire is nice too since you don't have to remove the battery to get at the card.  Just be sure to go into the SD card settings and choose unmount SD card...

My HTC inspire works fine in windows 7 (letting windows install it's own driver), and it worked fine before and after rooting. What version of windows?

I'm running Windows 7. Mine used to work fine but randomly stopped working one day.

Could be a bad data port...

Did you buy an aftermarket cable? There is a thin cable just for charging. The cable for data is heavier. I have the same phone and discovered that awhile back. Both are available from the aftermarket.

It's been awhile since I've used the original cable, It got completely destroyed. I used a Nokia cable for the longest time but I don't remember ever plugging it up to a PC while i was using it. I recently bought a new HTC cable off the internet and it will charge, but not connect.

Then it sounds like a driver issue. Uninstall the drivers currently installed, and then let windows re-install it. If that doesn't work, google for the drivers.

You bought the charging cable and not the DATA one. Common mistake.

I went back and checked my purchase, as it was only a few weeks ago, and it was listed as a USB data sync cable. Perhaps they had it listed wrong.

Hmm if it is a data cable then there is another setting. When you connect your phone to your PC do you get a popup on the phone asking how to connect?

No that stopped happening a long time ago. The thing is, i've been through several cables but I only ever used the original to connect to the PC untill now. Sometime after the original was torn up there was a software update for the phone. That was months ago and I've just recently connected it to a PC to get some pictures off of it. So i really don't know if the software update had any effect on it or not.

Also I've checked the setting and I do have "ask when connected" checked so it should pop up the prompt box when connected if it detects a PC.

I received that update too and have no issue.

I would suggest taking the phone and the cable your using to your carrier and let them look at it.

So what happens when you plug it into a different computer?  I think your data port is kaput.

It doesnt work on any computer. I've tried my desktop and my laptop. I also took it to my parents house and tried it on both of their computers and they didnt detect it either. :bolt:

Have you tried to connect thru Bluetooth?

Very common with phones with the micro USB data port.  The port is very fragile.  In fact, right in your manual it will tell you not to use the phone while it's charging.  Not that there's anything wrong with using the phone while it's charging but that using it while charging increases the possibility of damaging the data port.  This type of damage is almost never covered under a manufacturers warranty either...  You can still get stuff off and on the phone via the SD card and Bluetooth, however.  You're lucky that it will still charge...

To be honest I had kinda forgot about that. Only my laptop has bluetooth but I just tried that and it does work.

I have had troubles with that port. Before I had an otter box there was nothing covering it and it was full of fuzz and who knows what. I couldn't get a cord to stay plugged because the port was stuffed full. I cleaned it out with a pocket knife (for lack of anything else that would fit in there) and noticed even before I started that the whole port and the little tab that sticks up was pretty beat up. I'm sure the pocket knife didn't do it any favor but at least my charger stays plugged in now.

I'll say to that my phone is probably on the charger longer than its not on the charger everyday. It has to be or it won't last. That's for another thread though. lol

That means it's definitely either the cord or the port. I'd try a different cord before I started to panic.

I've tried a Nokia cord (which I've read in multiple places that it WILL work with the Inspire) and 2 HTC cords and they didn't work either. I suppose the post is screwed..

The phone place you go to should be avoided in the future. They are idiots.

I had a friend let me borrow an ORIGINAL HTC cord that came with their Inspire and mine still didn't work. Her's still connects to a PC using that cord.

After comparing my charging port to the one on hers, I'm suprised mine even works it was beat up so bad.
