Title: Better Bans
Post by: Penguin on January 21, 2012, 11:33:19 PM
There is a bizarre aspect to getting banned on the boards, one never sees the offending post or posts.  The longer the ban, the more difficult it is to remember just what went wrong.  I propose that if a poster is banned, then they would receive an e-mail with the post copied and pasted and some commentary by Skuzzy as what pushed it over the edge.

For a long time, I got banned left and right because I had no clue as to what went wrong.  I'm sure other posters have felt the same way, and that knowing not just the rule broken, but how it was broken is essential to using the ban hammer effectively.  Imagine giving someone a ticket but not telling them how they got it; the confusion and frustration are the same.

Everytime I have gotten a vacation from this board it is because I did something incredibly dumb that was asking for me to get banned. The most recent ban I got said 1 more and I'm out for good. I've tried to be a good boy because I really like this place.

Most people don't think before they post, even though we have forum rules - they are very BROAD in interpretation, however one rule remains the same..

If it seems like a stupid idea, it probably is, only rule I ever break is #4 for "being disrespectful" - rarely am I ever disrespectful unless someone warrants it.

In 10 years I know I been muted a few times in game, never on the BBS - in game some arguments can go either way, I simply stick to facts - I research and post my input for wishlist and such, and don't play with the trolls, be respectful to everyone and you never get muted/banned.

even jokingly will rub someone the wrong way and you can get banned.

In 20 years of law enforcement I wrote lots of tickets.  The guy doing 20mph over the limit knows why he got the ticket....however he would nearly always whine a bit and present some lame excuse as to why he shouldn't get a ticket. (Only worked one time for one guy)

Forum Posting Rules - all users read
« on: July 14, 2008, 09:56:54 AM »

By posting anywhere on this bulletin board, it is assumed all users have read and understand the following posting rules.

1- Posts are to be made in the relevant forum. Users are asked to read the forum descriptions before posting.

2- Threads should remain on topic, do not "hijack" topics.

3- Do not open a new thread that duplicates a current topic.

4- Flamebaiting, flaming, being abusing, being disrepectful, trolling, spamming or posting to incite or annoy is not allowed. If you cannot make a positive contribution to the thread, then just stay out of it.

5- Members are asked to not act as "back seat moderators". If you feel a post violates the forum rules, the use the "Report to Moderator" link in the post to report it.

6- Posting pornographic or generally offensive text, images, links, etc. will not be tolerated. This includes attempts to bypass the profanity filter.

7- Cheating allegations or descriptions are not allowed. Email support@hitechcreations.com to report any issues regarding this. HTC permanently bans anyone caught cheating in Aces High. We take cheating and allegations of cheating very seriously.

8- Complaints about a player's behavior online should be emailed to support@hitechcreations.com rather than posted to this board.

9- Users are permitted to upload one of their own avatars. Avatars must be in good taste and consistent with the other rules of this board.

10- Do not punt topics. Punting would be making a non-substantive post for the express purpose of bring the thread to the top of the thread list.

11- Members should post in a way which is consistent with "normal writing". That is users should not post excessive numbers of emoticons, large, small or coloured text, etc. Similarly users should not SHOUT or use excessive punctuation (e.g. ! and ?) in topic titles or posts.

12- All posts, in public forums, should be made in the English language.

13- Threads started devoid of commentary will not be allowed (i.e. links, cut-n-pastes, clicky, read this...)

14- Posting topics or threads which are based on politics, race, or religion is expressly forbidden.

Posts and threads may be edited, deleted, or locked for violations of these rules. Continued or blatant violation of these rules may result in a temporary or permanent ban.

If you see a post which may violate the above rules, please make use of the "Report to moderator" link provided in the post in question.  You may also provide your reasoning on how it violates the above rules.

It's not that I can't read them while I'm here, it's that when I try to figure out what happened, I can't get them.  The guy doing 20mph over the speed limit knows what he's doing because he has a spedometer, as opposed to a poster, who cannot tell until it is too late.  This is especially true for topics that are 'on the edge', and the line becomes fine.

You just answered your own question.  Don't post topics on the "edge" and you'll be fine.  /thread

Any topic is some distance from the edge, so 'on' is relative.  My point is to make that edge clearer.

I once got a 1 week vacation from the board for posting something that someone found to be offensive.  In no way did I mean for it to offend anyone.   After talking to Skuzzy it was determined to be a distasteful comment that I apologized for but Skuzzy said I would still have to do a 1 week ban.   I learned from my mistake and moved on.      :salute

Seems pretty clear to me, right there in the rules. I've been on these boards a long time with many a post, and NEVER have I been banned. I've had a few post edited, but never banned. Seems pretty easy, just follow the rules  :aok

Last time I got banned it was simply because I mentioned P****dent O***a to place a question about a gaffe into context.  I emailed skuzzy and he explained everything in a very clear, concise manner.

<S>

I believe there is a zero tolerance when it comes to any breaching of any rule.  Some will get your post banned and others will get you banned.  It's best just to err on the side of caution.

Bottom line: If you don't know why, send an e-mail. They will tell you point blank why. You will understand then (if you don't already know).

The correct address, support@hitechcreations.com , is here on the BB.  It's also on their webpage.  It's in Skuzzy's signature.  You could search online for "Aces High email" and get it.

You don't need Outlook. You can use any email client or web mail.  It's very simple and easy.

Never happened to me but I'm sure I've been close a time or two.  Know where the line is and stay well away from it.

There's other boards where you can let your hair down so to speak.  Play nice here is the best policy Peng.

And don't get banned again.  You make me laugh :)

It's really quite simple.. IF IN DOUBT, SHUT YOUR PIE HOLE!

If it's a 'borderline' deal then you'll usually see your post get deleted (example:  See Rule #4) and then you can look up the appropriate rule and learn not to do it again.  People typically only get banned if they CONTINUE to push the line or if they REALLY go over the edge.

If you have difficulty understanding this then maybe you should consider if you should even bother to ever post anything here...

I should add that I've had maybe 2 posts deleted (borderline political) and have never been suspended from this board.

It was a very subtly placed joke seeing as I only reversed what he said. Sorry, sometimes these things go right over peoples' heads.
