This is my skin of a 549 Squadron RAAF Spitfire Mk 8. Late in the war, with the threat of Japanese attacks on their airfields receding, some RAAF and RAF aircraft were kept in bare metal or silver painted schemes to save weight and reduce drag. It presumably helped prevent friendly fire incidents as well. This was particularly the case with lend lease aircraft, but also some British ones.
This aircraft was usually flown by Flt. Lt. Dave Glaser but its only action was in a single ground attack sortie flown by Squadron Leader Eric Bocock on 1st October 1944.
I have applied the new bump and specularity maps to this skin. I've kept the bump map effects turned down as they can look a little weird on natural metal skins if overdone. Being able to make the metal shiny without washing out the painted areas is a big improvement though. I have found the bump mapping to be a more useful effect on GV skins.

Wow...beautiful. Liking the skin bump feature :aok

Thanks for the kind words guys, and thanks to Lyric1 for finding me the info on this skin.
Yes Kazan, the screenshot was taken in the beta with all the eye candy turned on. The bump mapping shows up best on the flaps under the radiator boxes, they have a 3D look to them although they are only 2D on the Spit shape. Also the small blisters behind the gun ports.

Wtg,

:rofl Might help Rapier, but in my case... I'll just look "purdier" as I go down in flames... Then again, this baby may get some of our retirees like Stiletto or B-man looking this way again...
Nice work Greebo! :salute

That's polished. You wouldn't see bare metal like that on anything but a show plane.

Another great Spitfire VIII skin! I'm looking forward to using this.

Hi,
beautiful skin, the detail is superb. But, just to let you know, 549 Sqn, like its sister 548 Sqn was not a RAAF sqn. They were both RAF sqns with RAF pilots - although the ground crew were Australian. This aircraft, although normally Dave Glaser's, was also flown as you say by the CO, Sqn Ldr Eric Bocock, and on 2 sorties by Flt Lt 'Nick' Carter - my dad.

Now that is interesting.

No 549 Squadron listed ever for the RAAF.

Thanks crater, I'll amend the skin name file to correct that.
