Looks like a good one. C2 and C3 got the fuzzies shortly after the burst. Wonder how its going to screw up DX radio transmissions.

looks like an animation of the flare from different perspectives, note the position of the planets.  1st is top down on solar system, second is with fixed view of earth, third is some sort of projection map?

I'm just waiting till we get a flare big enough to kill all the communication/GPS/whatever satellites and leave the modern world in chaos so I can run off to the mountains and live Dick Proenneke or Marty Stouffer style.

I hate civilization.

Au contraire, remember when scientists thought that they'd discovered aliens?  The story was all over the news within hours.  If the sand hits the fan, then the truth will always get out.

People are freaking out over the end of the world too much. I mean, it will happen and it could be anytime. I believe it will end, I don't believe that we can predict it. I mean what if were reading the day backwards 5105.  :devil

I'm not going to worry about it because there's nothing we can do about it. If everybody dies no ones going to miss you, so don't worry.

With an event like this.. Nothing. I could have some effect if you were at one of the poles but not at the lower latitudes where people live.

Nothing.  The atmosphere will block any harmful radiation to humans.

Shortwave radio could be interrupted, and satellites could be affected by drag, and other communication problems.

The increase in sensitive electronics, and a dependence upon satellites and wireless communication, could however cause major problems.  For example, a networked powergrid.

There is an issue if no backup is present.  It's like taking an iPhone but no compass while hiking.  If the iPhone, much like the other sensistive electronics in the power grid, can fail.  If there is no compass, or simpler, more durable backup to act as an interim solution while the sensitive electronics come back online then the sand has really hit the fan.

Save up money for a new computer, your microchips are not radiation resistant.  :devil

If they stay out in the sun and do not move at all to absorb maximum radiation, they run a serious risk of loosing a whole day of their life.

If people are going to run around like Chicken Little over a solar flare or series of solar flares then it's no different than when people cowered in fear of a solar eclipse in ancient times, believing the end of the world was at hand.

All this over some solar wind and increased Aurora Borealis?

Read a book now and then for Pete's sake.

I live on the beach and go boating and fishing as often as most here go a convenience store.

That's my reason for inquiring about danger.

Lockheed Martin was hit by it and was having troubles with their phone system. I called today to get a breifing and could barely hear the guy but he could hear me fine. I barely heard him saying it was due to the solar flare and then he switched me over to another briefer.

Those satellites are more shielded and less likely to go down than transformers down on earth.
