Title: 109 K4
Post by: sandwich on January 23, 2012, 09:40:54 PM
Does anybody have some good film and tricks detailing the way to set up a shot with the K4? I'm honestly baffled by the ballistics of the gun. Any film and random tips would be helpful.

Also, I remember a while back seeing a thread by grizz detailing every aspect of lining up the shot with taters and whatnot. If I can get the link to that thread, that would be perfect.  Search isn't working for me for some reason.  :bhead

:rofl :rofl the only skill i have mastered in the K4 is how to die with style......well ok maybe it isnt what you would call style, but it sure as hell is funny to watch!

The thing that has helped me the most, is I only fire the tater gun by itself.  Never with the MGs...  Do that for awhile and you will get a better feel for the trajectory when you can easily see the tracer of just the 30mm.  The tater has also helped me to remember the absolute importance of unloading the wings before pulling the trigger.

FLy the k4 for awhile and you will get the hang of it, but for me, it has helped me by forcing me to manuever for the shot that I want rather then pulling the trigger and hoping for a lucky impact.

Don't mistake me, I'm not one of the k4 savants of AH...  Just a guy who has been flying it off and on for a few months.

Set the 30mm convergence to 200 and only shoot when the enemy is within 400 of you. The tater is so slow and drops off so fast that you will never hit anything past 600 unless you're very lucky.

Try .target (range) in the arenas and shoot the 30mm at 200 and then 600 and you'll see the huge difference.

Question for you...  How do you like to set the trim in the k4?  Do you set it at a particular speed before entering a fight?  Combat Trim?  Or are you working the trim a lot while fighting?

I only trim when I'm at high speed go get out of compressed dive. Other then that I let the auto trim do whatever it does...

I must admit that I am a bit surprised.  As much flap work that the 109 needs, I would think you would want to shut combat trim off...  You can't argue with results though.

I don't use trim. I just center the tabs and give it control input to center it.

Here... go off line and make slicing passes at the drones. I don't use the gun sight, I use the cockpit bars for aim. Figure out at what distance and at what time you should pull the trigger as the planes cross across the cockpit bars. For me, its about 300 meters away and as they cross the two nearest bars if they are at around 200sih mph.

I never could get used to the cockpit bars...I've tried it with a dot on my screen...no luck

This is the post Grizz made on aiming the tater gun

This is a post I made about it. You might find this helpful but Grizz's post is more informative.

I'll be looking for you!  I've been flying the 109s again this tour, and having fun with them.  Would love to get some pointers and such!

the problem with the 30mm is not learning it, its unlearning it.  Once you get used to the 30mm - you overshoot with every other gun, lead too much, and fly your plane for the roll-over snap shot (instead of saddling like with most planes).  So once you master the 30mm, you know you are sorta screwed unless you are one of the naturals that seem to be able to switch planes and wepons and still pull of lots of wins.
