Title: Installed HDMI Cable = Smaller Screen
Post by: SmokinLoon on January 27, 2012, 03:59:15 PM
I plugged in the HDMI cable finally but now I have a smaller screen than my monitor.  The display setting still show 1920X1080, and the picture is high quality, but the visable screen is about an inch in from all 4 sides on my Acer 23in monitor.  I've tinkered around with the monitor buttons but cant seem to find anything to adjust.  It recognizes the HDMI cable.  The video card is a ATI Radeon HD 5700 series.  All the drivers are updated as of a week ago.

HELP!   :pray

Alright fellas, all your help is appreciated but I'm not finding what I need to find to change the settings.  I'm been in and out of the display settings in the control panel, and played with the monitor buttons 100 times by now.

I wouldnt think just swapping out the old cables to the HDMI would be this complicated.  :bhead

Right click your screen for Catalyst Control Center unless you use a different program for video settings. Click the My Digital Flat-panels tab. Select Scaling Options. You should see a slider to adjust the picture size.

I dont have those options. Does it matter than I use Win XP?  To adjust my video settings I've always just gone in to control panel>display>settings.

EDIT:  I found the "Acer eDisplay Management" tab when I right clicked on my desktop, but it has no adjustments in there for the sise of the screen.

there should be a setting in your monitor menu something like "pc/av mode" change it to pc.  you can only access by pressing the buttons on your monitor not from inside windows.

Scaling should be in the driver settings. If you're not using Catalyst I don't know where you'd find it.

Alright fellas, all the help and input is greatly appreciated but I couldnt stand the pain any more of not having the full viewing of my 23in monitor, so I dumped the HDMI cables and went back to the old VGA cable (had to use a DVI adapter).  All works well.

Just how much am I missing by not using the HDMI cable?  Can I see 780, or am I stuck on 480 for watching vids, etc?

There's a monitor setting you're not finding it's that simple.

Since you're using a VGA to DVI adapter the monitor is getting an analog signal, as opposed to a digital signal which is being delivered through the HDMI.  Because of this it is doing something goofy with the processing of the HDMI signal.

Before doing anything else reinstall the HDMI cable and make sure the resolution (through the graphics properties on  your computer) is set to your monitor's native resolution.  If you can tell me the make/model of your monitor I can help look this up for you.

If your resolution is set to a lower resolution it may be upscaling the analog signal but not the digital signal which is why it's smaller using the HDMI cable.

If you're 100% positive the resolution is set to your monitor's native resolution then there has to be a monitor setting you're not finding.

I think that once you have it set up properly you'll find the HDMI picture to be MUCH better than the VGA signal.

I looked high and low in the monitor settings and with the HDMI cable I didnt have any options to change.

Since you're using a VGA to DVI adapter the monitor is getting an analog signal, as opposed to a digital signal which is being delivered through the HDMI.  Because of this it is doing something goofy with the processing of the HDMI signal.
The HDMI cable used HDMI ports on both ends.  The DVI adapter had to be used to connect the VGA cord in to the video card but not the monitor.

Before doing anything else reinstall the HDMI cable and make sure the resolution (through the graphics properties on  your computer) is set to your monitor's native resolution.  If you can tell me the make/model of your monitor I can help look this up for you.  The monitors native resolution is 1920x1080, that is what the drivers set it to once installed. The monitor is a Acer S232HL LCD.

I don't doubt that a bit.

I will try to reinstall the HDMI cable again and see what happens.  Stay tuned for the next episode of AFV!   :D

EDIT: Nothing new to report.  When I install the HDMI cable I still get the reduced viewing area.  The resolution still shows 1920X1080 in both VGA and HDMI cables, but the VGA give me the full screen and the HDMI gives me about an inch form the sides less and about 3/4th of an inch less from the top and bottom.  When I press the buttons on the monitor with the VGA cable I get a bit more options to tinker with vs the HDMI cable mode.  None of the physcal monitor settings allow me to change the size or resolution of the picture, only the "warmth" and about 2 more color type settings.

Many thanks.  I reinstalled both drivers *again* and went in to the catalyst and tinkered with the settings just like it showed in the first link you provided and BAM! things now looks as good as it can get.

The changes needed to be made within the video card, not the monitor itself.

...and WOW!, it is very nice to be able to see things in the higher level quality, what a difference the HDMI cable makes.

Thanks again to everyone for all the help, especially Tigger29!   :salute
