Was offered a Cost Accounting position this morning and accepted. I am wired. Calling everyone I know and emailing anyone in my contact list.
I was laid off in November of 2008. Finally took a job at Walmart in late October just to survive. Had to borrow 15 bucks from mom the first week just to buy gas for work. Thank God for Moms! Believe it or not I only got behind on 3 bills and 2 of those are caught up and none hit my credit report.
When I was laid off I knew I was in trouble because of my age, turned 58 last week, and I knew this recession would last. In 2007 I graduated with a Masters in Accountancy. The reason attended school was to get enough credits to sit for the CPA exam. Well here was the opportunity. I spent up to 20 hours a day studying for that exam and finally passed in 2010. All the while looking for work. Getting licensed was tough. However I was finally able to get that accomplished in July of 2011.
All during this it was a period of ups and downs. Thinking I had the job but never hearing anything. Then there were the subtle age comments. One guy said, well I'm looking for someone who can keep up with me. Which was at least inconsistent since a moment before he was saying he was making to many mistakes because he was trying to get too much done. One young lady asked me one question, When did you graduate with your B.S.? I said 1990. End of interview.
Then there were those, and many, who said it was my fault I'm unemployed. I never bought that. I always knew it was my responsibility to get a job though.
I sent out 100s of resumes and maybe better than a 1,000. I would call people who said to contact them and never get a reply, ditto for employers. I did anything I could think of to get a job and increase my network base. It's been tough!
When I told my brother this morning, who understood everything I've been through, he cried. Yeah, it's been that bad.
My advice to anyone unemployed is to get a job, any job. Prove that you still want to work. Walmart was a real eye opener for sure but I would not have gotten this job without it. I was tickled they let me show up everyday.

Indiana. Most states do require 150 credit hours. I met all other requirements except the 150 hours. So I thought I might as well get a masters.

It's funny you should mention "drive". I was told on another board I was so driven I probably scare employers. I modified that a bit and would say, "My friends say I'm so driven I'm scary" and then add, for humor, "Well, I'm not scary."

I admire your tenacity. family brings great honour and privilege,
feels good to provide and shelter them. I know how it is to smile at your kids

Congrats Getback!
I've had to watch a couple of close friends go through some real hard times these last couple of years.
It pisses me off to see good people get put through the wringer because of things completely beyond their control.
On the bright side, it sounds like you have turned your corner.
And given what you've been through, you know now there is no adversity you couldn't overcome; therefore there is no goal you can not obtain.

Thanks all! It's been a test for sure. I never drowned myself in despair and hopelessness. Not that I didn't have a bad day or two where I screamed at the world. hehe.

Nicely done Getback.
I too have been thru a few ups and downs.
Earned an Associates in Avionics Technology in USAF then an Associates in Science right after I got out. Had a few good years.
Then Aerospace industry went to hell in late '80's ..we lost our first house (sold it before goin into foreclosure thankfully, but just got out from under it, dint make a dime)
..useda average 250 resume's a month sent out ..after 6 months of hangin on by our teeth wife and I decided to 'go for it' so we moved back 'home' and I went to school to learn Virtual Reality Programming.
Hired out of the program at the 2 year mark (two weeks before finals to earn Associate in CAD Engineering .. since I was 4.0 Deans List with Honors, they gave me a diploma anyway)
..to be Lead Artist for Air Warrior.
EA bought us and showed most of us the door.
Picked up by Papyrus to work on their NASCAR racing sim.
Papy bought by some french company, they laid off most of original crew and others left.
I left to work on Falcon V.0
Company went tits up after 3 months.
Hundreds more resume's out ..went to work as a CAD detailer.
Just wasn't 'gettin it' .. researched, decided on Nursing ..high demand, low supply, for the foreseeable future.
All of a sudden .. I was 'old' .. physically unable to do direct patient care after 3 years of it.
Legs lettin me down and now there just havent been any openings with any skill set I have that want to hire.
Literally every game company has my resume.
Did a short stint at 2XL games doin low poly iPhone games.
My last job to date .. but ..
..good news is I made it.
Filed for Social Security, starts in May.
Don't have much, but Vette is paid for and wife and I will be fine from here on.
I do not have to work for anyone ever again.
Worked with some great people over the years, lot of good times with great teams.
Also worked with some real jerk-wads.
Middle management suit-dweeb wannabe's are the worst.
Learned early on to trust my judgement and to hell with the rest, reduced stress level tremendously.
As tough as gettin a job is, never subjugate yourself to something you know is wrong.
It just gets worse from there.
Walk away. Find another path.
Life *is* too short.
And lastly ..
Prayer Works.
