They just added grass and look at how many people are complaining about drops in frame rates.

To those who leave it on maybe, however if it was added there would be an option for it to be turned off in the video settings, so why not
allow it in game for those who do want to see it?.

+1 I'd vote on it, as long as the option to turn it off is added, thus way those with lower FPS can deal with it.

thing about contrails is when you have furballs like we do in ah they will be thick as clouds and basically useless.

Of course not, I deal with not seeing the extra graphic effects - for example Muzzle flashes I wish I could see during GV fights, it would make tanking so much easier, the problem is with the excessiveness of the flashes lower my FPS to lower then 15 - I simply cannot have it turned on or I will over heat my video card. The same setup applies for contrails, if the video card can't handle it then you turn it off.

There really isn't much "icon range" added to having contrails, everything has a set limit in distance when objects are rendered, having contrails on simply mean at the maximum range you can see the contrails, while having it off simply means you need to get closer to see the icon of the bombers.

Its a win/lose situation, I deal with having absolutely no graphics on, others have to deal with it unless they upgrade their system as I am currently doing. Even Bump Maps I wish I knew what they looked like, frankly I have no clue about the new "grass" either.

The only time I think Contrails would a serious issue, and this is one I am afraid of - is an FSO event - where massive sets of bombers could hurt some people's frame rates, where in the main arena there isn't that much of a "setup" to seriously hurt someones Frame rates.

My best frames are above 15k, where anytime below 10k is nearly horrible.

Just pretend that that really slow moving red dot on your clipboard map is a contrail.

There shouldn't be any contrails from divebombing fighters.  Contrails occur at the high/cold altitudes.

Dependent on weather conditions.

We don't have weather.

Sure we do. Some amazing weather, actually. But only when someone bothers to set it up, ala the last scenario. ;)

Why just bombers?
