Friendly icon....
"pilot name"
"plane type"
1 icon.
Cut down on keystrokes, get both info in single icon.

On the fence...
You can already check to see what they are flying by using the ctrl+I key's (or is it alt+I? I forget... :o I do it without a second thought when I want to find out what someone else is flying). Wouldn't bother me if it were implemented, and so long as there is an option to use the "classic" icon setting if a pilot wishes to, shouldn't be a problem. :aok

-1 I'm in cognito so no one rats me out to the other side. :neener:

I do spend quite alot of time cycling through the alt-Is, but it would be more clutter so on balance ...

You can't tell by looking at the plane?
I would like to reference all the "no icon" wishes.

it doesnt mater what he's flying. it matters what you are flying.

Make it optional?

It does. Say you see 3 red guys in front of you and there is one friendly with you. Your certainly like to know whether he's flying a goon or a 262.
-
seeing that it is 3 cons, the 262 pilot will most likely do nothing useful, just like the goon

-or how about -
"pilot name" (standard font)
"plane type - distance" (smaller font)
Adding plane type would reduce noobs from asking what planes their teamates are flying.

SA goes a lot farther than just looking out the window for bad guys.

I would rather have distance than type of plane. specially when I have type mapped to stick. make icon bigger and it may hide some detail.

+1 as an option. I personally wouldn't use it because I don't think I'd like the clutter, but I do find it useful sometimes to know what the friendlies around me are in, and have the alt-i function mapped to my stick. It helps me anticipate what the friendlies around are going to do, and also allows me to set the enemy up better for them.
Depending on the friendly's plane type, you drag a bit differently.

Enemy players names should never show.
But I would like friendly aircraft types and player names to rotate automatically every 5 seconds
-
How about merely toggling between normal and type without going through friendly only and off?

No, no rotation. It would be super pesky.

I just checked and the plane type is currently above the pilot name (not what I showed in my previous comment). My quoted comment above is just an example and not meant to be followed exactly.
I suggest the smaller icon font for multiple reasons: 1. Trying to squeeze the overall size down. 2. The smaller font would help flyers to more quickly distinguish friendly from foe. Similar to today’s modern flight sim's where a triangle or diamond symbol on a heads-up display (HUD) represents different targets.
"In the United States, about 7 percent of the male population – or about 10.5 million men – and 0.4 percent of the female population either cannot distinguish red from green, or see red and green differently from how others do (Howard Hughes Medical Institute, 2006)"

ok so what if you could ALT+I to set it to "combo icon"
so kinda like how you can cycle through icon settings with ALT+I
"normal"
"plane type"
"friendly only"
"combo"
"icons off"
