Title: New Updater.
Post by: hitech on February 10, 2012, 03:34:12 PM
Hello all, I've been working on a new method that will be used in our auto updater and a tool to download skins and terrains outside the game.

Please download this file to your Aces High folder, and run it. If you wish to test speed delete a few skins and use it to down load them.

http://downloads.hitechcreations.com/ahdown.exe (http://downloads.hitechcreations.com/ahdown.exe)

The same transfer system will later be used in the normal AH auto updater.

Thanks
HiTech

I downloaded it, opened it, a notification comes up saying "Could not start application." I click OK, but the Aces High File Downloader runs fine (or at least I think it does). There's a checkbox for the skin folder, I click it, and click download. It seems to download a P51D file (it downloads to fast for me to read all), then nothing happens.

I turned it off and turned it on again, same thing. Message pops up, click OK, click folder, click download, P51D file downloads again.

I don't know if I signed up for all of thi... oh GREAT THANKS A LOT Now I'm caught up in a pornado!

 :O

Nah just kidding.. works great!  "All Ready" looks kind of funny... in my opinion "Already" looks better but that's nitpicking.  I LOVE all the FILE menu options!

There is a possibility you downloaded just as we were Code Signing it. Could you download it again and test again?

:aok The "Could not start application" message disappeared. I click the checkbox next to skins, click download, downloads a P51D file. And that seems to be it.

I deleted a bunch of 109 skins. Started the downloader, selected the skins I had removed and it replaced them all no problem. Worked great on my end.

Would you also try rename your current skins folder, then make a blank new one and run the test again.

Also be sure you are running it in the Aces High Folder. IF not it may simply be failing on the move to skins folder step of the download.

If you check the box by the skins it should down load all of them with one click.

:aok I moved my skins folder to the desktop, made a new one. Moved the AHDOWN.exe to the Aces High folder, ran it, and now skins are downloading as I type.

Works fine!
Plus that list definitely shows the planes in the order they were added into AH starting from the beta version. Cool ;)

I tried it but it didnt d/l any skins at all.  it just said it was d/l for like 2 seconds then it went away.

edit: tried it several times didnt d/l anything.

-removed the skin folder to desktop
-tried d/ler, it went thru the motions no skins anywhere.

another edit:  ok after the 5 or 6th time it actually started d/ling skins.

No problems here:

1) renamed old skin folder
2) made new empty skin folder
3) ran program from my AH folder
4) all skin downloaded just fine

Just a simple question for HTC.

Did not was more 'simple' to make a web page with each skin picture,
and the relative link for the download?

You would have to click on each skin you wished to download instead of all, 1 plane or 1 skin.

The updater also only downloads the skins you do not already have.

Worked fine for me, downloaded all new skins.  Thx.

On a semi-related note, I downloaded the game last night from the webpage download link because the in game downloader was going slow, and it rewrote my entire game.  Luckily I had a settings folder saved elsewhere, but I'm not sure why it rewrote my game.

Correct, but the question is still open - or not?   :O Why not a web page?  Perhaps I guess ... O.K.

Also, It does not show the picture of the skin.

Why do I download a skin if I cannot see its picture?  - so I tought to a web page but I think to know why You do not prefer this way.

Well It's fast, so We can download and view the skin.

Why not add this function inside of skin preview program?

Because of the resources that would be required to maintain it.
Also the updater is just a test bead for the downloading system that will migrate to AH. It will include much other content shortly like the terrains and any other items we wish.

Can't you use a image hosting website? I know less than you do, but I'm curious is all. It's free, and it's permanent. By "resources", do you mean every kB you add on the site means it'll cost you more?

Downloaded easy enough.  Tested easy enough.

Nice program.  This will be nice to have.   :aok

Oh, and can you smack Skuzzy on the back of the head and get him to approve and implement all those wonderful skins currently swinging in the breeze?  There are a lot of very nice new skins, especially new P30 skins waiting to be put in to the game.    :D   Thanks!   :aok

Is there any reason that it says "please select something to download" after you already run it once?  Or at this point is that it's message saying that you have already downloaded all of the available skins?

You have already downloaded everything. If you would expand the skins , nothing else would be showing checked.

This is a very welcome addition, HiTech!

I downloaded 244 skins in just a few minutes whilst browsing the BBS!

Thanks, Sir!

Interesting because when I expand the skins folder it shows me this with some of the folders checked but I get the same message.

I didn't click any of those files they were clicked already themselves.

Those entries do not have any skins.

You can expand each plane/vehicle and see the skin entries they have.

The file list has been updated on the host to include terrains, and the models that do not have skins have been removed. Just run your ahdown.exe again to see the change.
