Title: Frame 2 Summary
Post by: Nefarious on February 11, 2012, 12:13:33 PM
The Allied Ace was AKDG, He was representing: Captain Marion Carl (USMC) - The first USMC Ace of World War 2 was a Midway survivor from VMF-221 where he claimed a Zero destroyed. He was assigned to VMF-223 and became an ace on August 26th. Carl would destroy 16 1/2 enemy aircraft while at Cactus and two more later at Rabaul in 1943 totalling 18 1/2. http://acepilots.com/usmc_carl.html

While flying his F4F-4 AKDG managed to shoot down 4 A6M2 Zeros, But was shot down by an A6M3 flown by DerJude of Kommando Nowotny. Ironically Alpha81 was chosen as the backup and shot down 9 enemy aircraft and landed successfully!

The Axis Ace was once again Perdweeb, He was representing: Warrant Officer Toshio Ota (IJN) - Ota claimed 4 Wildcats on the August 7th mission to attack Guadalcanal. Later on a October 21st mission escorting bombers to the island he encountered Wildcats of VMF-212. Ota downed 7 kill Marine Corps ace Gunner Hamilton who bailed out but was never found. Seconds later he was engaged by 6 kill ace Frank Drury and Ota was killed. According to his group record he scored 34 kills. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toshio_Ota

While flying his A6M3 Perdweeb shot down 8 Enemy Aircraft, 7 SBDs and 1 F4F-4! He was shot down by an F4F-4 flown by Pigflu of the 353rd FG. He also claimed an assist on the Allied Ace Pilot AKDG! Kommando Nowotny shot down 34 aircraft last night, the same amount of kills Toshio Ota scored in WW2. Coincidence?

Too bad they both were shot down. Each side will be rewarded 20 points for shooting down the enemy ace pilots. You must land the kills for points.

Allied Pilots: 179
Axis Pilots: 184

Allied Kills: 119
Axis Kills: 92

Allied Assists:58
Axis Assists: 61

Allied Deaths: 23
Axis Deaths: 48

3 Carriers, 3 Cruisers, 7 Destroyers sunk by Allied Aircraft

1 Carrier, 2 Cruisers, 2 Destroyers sunk by Axis Aircraft

Congratulations to Alpha81 for being the top allied scorers tied for 9 kills. DrBone had the most objects destroyed for the second week in a row for the Allies with 21.

Congratulations to Perdweeb and Derjude for being the top Axis scorers tied with 8 victories and War for having the most objects destroyed on the Axis side with 34.

Objectives have been sent to 68th and 132 DW BG.

EDIT: Added Ships sunk

Congrats to perdweeb and AKDG, great job to both of you.

however, IMHO I think the "Ace pilot" thing should be spread around a bit more.

I wouldn't think any one pilot (or squad for that matter) should get a duty like that more than one time. Then it should move to a different squad and pilot for the next frame.

Perdweeb and the AK's had Ace duty in frame 1. It should go to two different squads in frames 2 and 3.

Just MHO, it is not my event, so if Nef feels different, then all is good, it is his design.

It can be legitimately argued both ways.

It was my intention to allow the CiC to choose, next time i will write it in like that Sled.

AKDG was asked by the assigned squad to be the ace. I am not even sure which squad was asked to select the Allied Ace.

I didn't see any mentioning of the plastering we did at A2 in the summary to counter the Allied advantage with more Axis ships sunk.

I think frame 2 will be pretty close once I compile the scores after frame 3.

Why not allow the aces for each frame to be picked more on performance, rather than preference.  For example:

Frame 1 - CiC's get to choose
Frame 2 - Aces are the "top killers" from frame 1
Frame 3 - Aces are the "top killers" from frame 2

You could even write it in that if 2 (or more) pilots tied for top killer in a previous frame, then the CiC can choose from either... but have them look at what kind of kills they were (fighter / bomber) and if they made it back safely or not.

If the selected ace cant make it for the frame he qualifies for, then it goes to the pilot that had the next highest number of kills.

Just a thought.

EDIT: As an alternate idea... the ace could be selected by the CO of the SQUAD with the highest number of kills in the previous frame... using the same criteria as above.

The Ace Mission is an amusing diversion from the ordinary.  The strategic objectives of the Frame carry the most weight and deserve the bulk of brain cycles.  It's very cool that the Ace Mission is seeking it's own process.  But let's not lose perspective.

When the Arabian Knights were tagged for Ace Mission in Frame 1, we viewed it as an honorific and we were honored.  Then we immediately went back to work on our part of the Frame 1 Objectives.

When the CiC for Frame 2 selected AKDG, we thought that was unusual, but we were happy for DG (who is a long-serving and dutiful member of our squadron).  Then we went back to work on our part of the Frame 2 Objectives.

Just saying that I like the 'wrinkles' in this FSO.  The Ace Mission is fun and the inventory challenge with the A6M3 and the P39 is pretty cool too.  These are great innovations.

Now get back to work on your part of the Frame 3 Objectives!!!   :)

I think it's fair for the ace mission to be distributed to 6 different pilots during an FSO and will be so from now on.

I was surprised to see myself picked again. I didnt mind, just surprised. Even if you did what AKP is saying, I would be ACE for all 3 frames. So I dont think that method would work either. Or maybe it is just coincidence.
