Post by: B-17 on February 17, 2012, 08:42:00 AM

Don't use Hello-Kitty paper to print it on.

I only say it because I had someone hand me their resume on Hello Kitty paper in an interview.  As much as I have a good sense of humor...  I prefer a nice heavy cardstock.

 :huh

Carstock, as opposed to letter paper? Regular 9.5/11"?

regular 8.5x11 paper is very flimsy...  doesn't speak well of your character.  It's a mental thing.

What field are you applying for? Different industries like different things (business vs medical vs media, etc.)

I'm only 15, so I'm not even really sure. For now anyways, I'd like to get into a music school, teach there... almost 20 years of musical experience between all of what I do combined. Later, probably a pilot or a truck driver.

I wouldn't go so far as using card stock, but definitely use good heavy paper.

Fedex or Kinkos stores sell actual resume paper. And yes, the type of paper you print on does make a big difference.

Many employers ask that you email resumes, as opposed to snail mailing them. PM me if you'd like a simple resume format, B-17. I think it's great you're filling one out, as opposed to simply submitting an application for employment.

Well then again what is your resume for? College type program? Job?

TBH for a 15 year old, most likely wherever you apply is going to have a standard job application they prefer you fill out. Considering you have no work experience, you only have academic and extracurricular activities you can list (honors, clubs, sports teams).

If you want to create your resume anyway, resume paper may not be necessary for what you are looking for. It will leave a good impression, but not many people expect a 15 year old to go to that length. I personally use watermarked resume paper, no more than one page resume and 3/4 page cover letter.

You're 15, a resume is going to be rather brief. And I wouldn't go for a math field if you figure 20 years of experience. You may want to properly qualify that.
At least you have the ambition to do this, but your choices are all over the place, like you were young and undecided.....

Best iof luck though.

Yeah, not math for me. I can add mulitply divide and subtract. That's about it :uhoh

between my 7 instruments, there are roughly 20 years of experience +- 1/2

Don't add the hours of combat experience you have gained in here.  That's not a good idea at all  :salute :D

Yes, may be too young to be fussing with such things.  But, not too young to become a master of your resume.

Best of luck  :salute

Quite true, hoping it might put me in a bit of a better light than simply sending in an application. :salute

Thanks for the help :)

A work year is generally considered to be 2000 hours.  I somewhat doubt that you can clock the 40000 hours that you are claiming.  Even if you spent 12 hours a day playing your musical instruments, it would still take you a little over nine years to clock 40000 hours.

You're claiming 12 hours a day every day 365 days a year since you were about 6 years old.

If I were you, I'd pay a little closer attention in math class.

As a 15 year old, claiming 20 years of experience is simply going to get people to laugh at you and not take you seriously.

Go to the near college and they have specialist that will help you on that for free.

I'm not really anywhere near a college, and I figured I could save a little bit of time by asking here and from my friends/family instead of getting up off my lazy arse and biking over to the college :D

I've had 10 years of instruction on the violin, 4 on the viola, 3 each on trombone, tuba, bagpipes, and 1 each on trumpet and guitar

10+4+3+3+3+1+1=25.

25years of experience altogether. I didn't say I had actually PLAYED them, I just had the experience. Much like saying "I've got 20 years of experience playing football" and "I've spent 20 years playing football"

I should probably have made myself more clear though, sorry.

Well, I started playing the trumpet in 5th grade...  Let's see, that was like 1980ish...  I can still play the trumpet, but I wouldn't dare claim that I had 32 years of experience.  You know what, if you as a 15 year old kid, wants to walk into a job interview and claim that you have 20 years experience as a musician, go right ahead and see how far you get.

You asked for advice.  It has been given.  It is up to you to make use of it or not.

Must be nice to be young and completely ignorant to the ways of the world still.

On the brightside you'll give someone a laugh.
