Title: Cabelas outpost.
Post by: oakranger on February 17, 2012, 02:51:27 PM
I got word that Cabelas is in planning with a chain out outpost stores. These stores are 40,000 sq ft by comparison, has 125,000 square feet of showroom space. They will open in markets with less than 250,000 people and areas where their showroom space are far distance. The specific details of the outpost are not all revealed, but what I was told one plane was to specified the outdoor gear for that area.

Why?

Because Cabelas has decided to "out" outpost stores by building 40,000 sq. ft. monstrosities.

Say goodbye to the local outfitters, guides, and proofreaders.

40k sq feet isn't a very big retail space.  The average Wal-Mart is about 250k and larger.

You're right, they'll be just large enough to occupy a space at your local strip mall.

Even worse.

And you are right about that.  So what will happen to the mom and pop shops when they shut down?  Where are the clients go?

The first outpost is near Yakiman (spelling) Washington.  They will start a long the west cost and move east.

New showroom store will be opening at Charleston, West Virginia.  And slowly they are invading Bass Pro Shops territory.

The days of being able to walk into a store and have someone know your name are over.

Mom and pops are gonna have to retire, the locals that made goods for them will have to suffer hunger and depravity.

The other side of the coin:

Someone gets a business model that works and employs lots of "sales associates" to pedal his wares in new buildings that don't build themselves thus helping locals in the trades...etc.

It's just too bad the coin can't land on it's edge and provide the best of both worlds.

Nearest Cabelas to us is the one on the West side of St Louis, a good two hours drive.  We make a point to stop in anytime we are in the St Louis area.  My time in Cabelas offsets the "shopping time" my wife and two daughters get...   :D

Exactly hehe. I could spend a whole day in there just browsing. Gander mtn here sucks. I work at a sporting goods store but I'd die to work at Cabelas.

I have one that is attached to a distribution center like an hour away.  Basically anything they carry online, they have there.  Also they have the sickest fish tanks I've ever seen.  Better to drive there than the suck that is Gander Mountain which is 3 miles away.
