Title: My New Plane
Post by: COndor06 on February 29, 2012, 01:52:43 AM
Any of you guys fly RC stuff? I am building the Gee Bee R3. Here are a few pictures of her but you really want to hear the 5 cylinder Moki radial engine in the video. If you have never heard an RC radial its worth a look. The Moki is 5K

Nice!

Do you have any cameras in the cockpit so when you fly it you could see what the "pilot" sees? I'd think it would be hard to control it if looking just from the side.

Yeah, I did it with my scale mustang a few months ago. Came out pretty cool.
Heres the video of it.

I had that happen with one of my planes about 20 years ago.  I had an aileron that started to flutter in a dive, and as soon as I touched elevator to pull out it just disintegrated the wing.

That may not be what happened in your dad's case, but it'd definitely possible.

I also had a friend who's wing wasn't strengthened enough where the left and right wings joined, so he ended up folding his wings in a dive and they came off.

The difference between our cases was that with flutter, my wing came apart.  In his case, his wings remained intact, they just came apart at the joint and came off the model.  His fuselage lawn-darted, but his wings fluttered down and were still in good shape when they hit the ground, lol.

I doubt the battery connection had anything to do with it.  If it had, the plane would have just gone in but would have been intact until impact.

It's definitely a bummer though.  Lots of money, time, and effort, to lose like that.

Nice video!

Did you post this here on the BBS a few months back?  I remember seeing this one, but cannot remember if I saw it while surfing youtube or whether you posted it here.

What type of camera did you use for the onboard footage?  Do you remove the canopy to gain access to the camera?  Or do you access it through the "guts" of the plane?

I'll eventually finish up the corsair I'm working on, and would like to mount an onboard camera to get a "pilot's" view.  I'm not looking for first-person stuff, I just want an onboard recorder.

I have a key fob spy camera that I've been using to mount on my birds to get a "bird's eye" view.  I'm not sure if I want to use that one or upgrade a bit for my rc planes.  I'd also like a camera to mount on an electric sailplane so that I can use it to scout potential hunting areas (mainly to find small ponds that may hold ducks that I can then hunt with my falcons).

I think one of my buddies posted the video about 2 months ago when I did it. The canopy slides back so mounting the camera was easy but at low RPM the plastic seat it was attached to would shake pretty bad.

That 51 was my project for Aeroworks and I still fly it at shows. My new project plane is going to be a killer. I am getting excited about this whole Gee Bee R3 fantasy plane thing.

The mustang is cool and I love it but (as you well know) you have to fly it by the numbers as all warbirds require. The Gee Bees flight envelope is only restricted to the pilots ability  :x and this baby waits for noone.  I CAN'T WAIT  Muuuhhhaaahaaaahaaaaahaaaahaa a

Yea, the Geebee should be a blast!  I have a scratch-built Pitts Super Stinker in the works too, and used to fly an Ultimate bipe.  Definitely gotta have a plane you can let loose with.

I used to walk my bird dog near a field dedicated to the RC clubs and would sit for hours enthralled by these great machines. What a totally cool hobby.

I do Electric and Turbine RC Jets...

only video I have up right now is of my Habu32 on stock EDF

Current project is a scratch build F-100D designed by Col. Art Johnson (F-100 pile-it)
planning to do it complete with all the normal jet stuff (retracts flaps etc) but am also adding a functional speed brake, and drogue chute...

Power will be a Jetcat P-80SE Turbine

Yeah I pretty much keep up with what people are using if it be FPV or just videoing . You see allot of Gopro's but this camera seems to be taking it's place pretty fast . I like to have one myself .
