anyone own one? thoughts...trying to stay cheap
-
Bad, bad, bad idea. Go and buy a Ruger 10/22 if you want a cheap gun. Works amazingly, tons of fun, you can buy a box of 1000 rounds cheap at Wal-Mart, it doesn't break, and there are tons of spare magazines on the market for it. If you hate .22 caliber rifles, you can get tons of really high quality bolt rifles for less than $500. Some guns that come to mind are the swedish K31,mauser series, and the springfield 1903. Some of these even have been re-chambered into more common NATO calibers. If you want a semi auto, you can get a M1 garand from the CMP for ~$600 (before transfer, shipping, etc). Just stay away from the kel-tec brand. There's a reason it is cheap.
-
There is nothing wrong with KEL-TEC as a firearm. I have shot plenty of their weapons and they function well enough but need a little more TLC than others. For a simple action you can't go wrong with a Ruger 10/22 though and you can tweak it whenever you feel like it.

I already own a 10/22 and I agree that its sweet. Im looking for a .223 ar type rifle and want to spend under $800 (I know thats a tough one)

If you want a cheap plinker go with the Hipoint 995. Great gun for the money, I got mine for about 250.

Kel Tec has started to make some high end firearms and they aren't cheap. Not sure why it would be a " bad bad bad idea" to buy one. What are you looking for anyway?
-
I have a friend that is a well respected class 2 in the NC area. He has gotten to the point where he doesn't let them in the shop. From my understanding, they require a lot more maintenance than similarly priced guns, and the only Kel-Tec I have ever shot was one of their pistols. The parts didn't even fit together, and the owner had to end up machining the slide some so that it wouldn't bind. Maybe I haven't had enough experiences with the company, but the ones I have had are all poor. If I was looking to buy a 5.56 AR type rifle for $800, I would personally save up for another couple of months and get a good base model AR15 from rock river, bushmaster, etc.
-
I've never been a fan of their pistols either. Some like the lightweight and size for conceal carry but I really don't like the 9 mile trigger pull. Now their new " tactical" stuff is very interesting. I really want their new KSG shotgun.

Their bullpup .308 is pretty interesting too.

Not really. Ruger Rancher rifle.

Should be very easy to get an AR for under $800. Along with RR and Bushmaster the Imxar mentioned, Smith & Wesson is a very good choice. They're are several very good AR rifles on the market right now. I'd recommend buying a basic flat top M4 configuration and figure out what you'd like to add from there. One thing I think is a must though is is replacing the pistol grip with a Houge. It's the best $20 I ever spent on my ARs.

Check out Model 1 . You can go to a local dealer or gun show and buy an AR lower. The lower has the serial number and has to have the paperwork done on it. The rest of the parts can be ordered and you can assemble it yourself. New Frontier Armory has complete lowers for around 100 dollars if you don't want to put it together. I don't know anything about them...I just saw it online yesterday. You can get one shipped to a local dealer and pay a fee for the paperwork. I've put together several using Model 1 parts, 7.62 x 39, 6.8 SPC, and a few in 5.56. I don't think they are as good in quality as some of the more expensive guns but they work.
Someone suggested a High-Point. I have one of those in .40S&W( High-Point 4095 carbine)...it ain't pretty but it's fun to shoot. Not sure what the price is on one, I swapped a pistol for it. Pretty sure it was listed under $300.
What kind of weapon are you looking for? As in what do you plan to do with it....targets, hunting, waste ammo (the fun stuff), etc?

Where can I order the parts to build one. I'm all for that.

Good website with alot of info.
As to who's parts to use? It's green apples vs red apples really.
Someone mentioned Model 1 sales. We have been using there upper kits to build AR's in class and have had no trouble with them at all. The kit comes with a complete upper (unassembled) and the internals for the lower. All you need then is a lower receiver. This is, by law, the gun itself because it has the serial number, so you will need to get this through a dealer/store. As for the price for a lower? I have seen them from 75$ to as much as you want to spend. Really about who's name you want plastered across the side, as a lower is really only a housing for all the working parts.

For the satisfaction or to save money?

you can pick up a Savage axis in .223 for about 280

I've always wanted an AR, I'd like to do it up like the M4 I used to fly with. I'm just trying to keep cost down, so it makes no difference to me assembled or parts.

I'd go with assembled jolly. Tomorrow I'll dig around and see who has some good deals. I've seen them on sale starting at $599.

cool....I can't wait

Jolly go to a book store and pickup a copy of shotgun news. There is a list of people that hold an FFL that will do the yellow form and call in the back ground check and order the stuff you want, the guy I use charges me 20 bucks and calls me when the items come in. And shotgun is the place I find all my parts to build my guns.
-
I just use the pawn shop closest to me for FFL transfers, cost is $25. When I looked at it, I bought a rifle as a single unit because it really wouldn't have saved me much to piece one together, at least for what I was getting.
-
I found a FFL right near my house, my problem now is if I go with a 16 in barrel it is a 7 day wait and $100 to do all the paperwork here in MD
MD seems almost as bad as CA............I guess I could drive up to DC and find one on the street

Just another reason I love Texas.

I've shot the sub 2000 alot, nice gun good to go for a 9mm carbine. I fondled the bullpup 7.62 at the local gunshop seemed nice. I'll make a case for a cheap AR that is high quality. Smith and Wesson M&P 15 Sport.
Got mine for $630 OTD.
Features
1/8 twist ( stabilizes most rounds 55-80 gr ) 4140 steel nitrocarbonized barrel with 5R rifling full car profile barrel ( no M203 cut) ( non milspec but a beast of a barrel)
M4 feed ramps
Properly staked Gas Key and chromlined Bolt Carrier, MPI tested bolt
5.56 chamber
Proper F marked front sight
Lower with forged trigger guard with glove size opening
comes with MBUS rear sight and 1 30 round Pmag
It does not have the ejection port cover or forward assist. I got a milspec upper with both for $89.
Awesome option for a quality budget AR. Gun is good to go...... I've got alot of rounds downrange, no FTF or FTE so far.
