Title: Google Changes....
Post by: Shuffler on March 01, 2012, 10:12:09 AM
Since the change goes into effect today, how many are changing search engines (google), email (gmail), video hosting (youtube), and other google owned services?

If you are changing what will you be using now?

Wow, ya'll don't watch the news much....

Shuff, I don't have any gmail, google, or active youtube accounts, but use google and youtube without having an account or signing in... I had heard that they're only going to collect and store all this data on account holders' habits and activities who are actually signed in.... if you were concerned about privacy "just don't sign in." Is that your take as well?

Only the paranoid know about the changes.

Basically they are doing what everyone else has been doing for 10 years.

If your worried about privacy now, its too late. Best if you just move off into the mountains and never.come back hoping nobody sees you go.

That's what I understood as well.  Before it went live, there was an area in their control panel to erase all of your past browsing history, so I did that.  Everything they had was from my phone, not from my PCs.

This is true. However if you have an android phone and gmail and have it connected to your mail... then your tracked all along with any other things.  Today I've been googling bing and other search engines when I do a search. lol Not that I am signed in when googling on my computer.

This is incorrect. Some don't mind others tracking them. Some do. Doesn't hurt watching what others can get about you. Those that don't care may care at a later time when info gets used improperly.

Erasing that will mean it is totally off the charts in 14 months. That is unless they made a once off change.

I'm not exactly sure what's so bad about this tracking, unless you're googling for illegal download sites and stuff...

How can data such as I watched a Led Zeppelin youtube video on 03/1/12 at 1:30AM be used "improperly"?

I didn't see the same disclaimer when I did it last weekend.  I bet that's part of the new changes that went info effect.

"However, as is common practice in the industry, and as outlined in the Google Privacy Policy, Google maintains a separate logs system for auditing purposes and to help us improve the quality of our services for users."

What's different about them?  I haven't paid any attention to it...

They instituted a new privacy policy across all of their sites, instead of having different ones for each.  Basically the new privacy policy is this...  You don't get any.   If you have a gmail account you've gotten several emails about it.

I do think Google has gone to far with this, but I haven't switched yet, I have had a Gmail account from the beginning and have several other email addresses set up to forward to it, switching would be a major pain in the butt.  For now I'll live with it, and just remember to delete my history, and log out once in a while.

I'm not a paranoid person by nature, but I do value my privacy, I'm not worried so much about what Google will do with the data, but what others who legally or illegally obtain it may do with it.  How long before some government or law enforcement agency starts pressuring Google to release all their data, without warrants, on certain individuals to them?  Then DHS is knocking at your door saying "Excuse me, we have some questions about your internet activity."  Google has already shown they are willing to cave to government demands (see how Google got into China).  There are already assaults on the 4th amendment, Google is has made a tool that would completely violate the 4th amendment, should it fall into the hands of government, and I have no doubt some agencies will try to use it.

I was just listening to a google rep talking about this

If you dont want to be tracked there are a couple of things you can do.

First and foremost. Simply dont log in. It is only going to be tracking those that are logged into their services. and those will be account specific.
Next if you dont want things tracked to say. Your work account. Have a separate log in
Example.

you know tin foil will only amplify any signals being sent.  I'd rather have a lead hat.

if you're doing nothing wrong though, why should what you do matter? Yes, I agree it infringes on our "freedom", but I don't search anything that would get me in trouble. I havent signed into youtube in months, and the only thing connected to google is my phone, which I seldom use the internet for, why I have a computer.

I am logged into my Google account right now.

My travels on the internet have always been logged one way or another, at least Google tells you what they are doing.

This.  It only took an act of congress to get them to do what most US companies already do voluntarily (and telecommunications companies have done since law enforcement conceived of wire tapping, and they have a long record of cooperating).  If you really care, and you're no better than just another "pot-smoking procrastinator/hippie", you would of unplugged your computer from the internet a decade ago.

My main e-mail account is gmail, and I haven't seen the first e-mail about it.
