The annual heritage flight qualification has started again. I am listening to the sounds of jets mixed with Merlins right now. It's great to be in the RV camp here on base since they fly right overhead. :airplane:
You may now become jealous, this has been a public service announcement. :devil :neener:

Jealousy would be enhanced by photographs of cool things flying over head...

I hate you so much right now

Don't be hatin' :D. Then again, there's always tomorrow. :salute
-
I see it every year, my house seems to be directly under the flight path.
I missed it this year as I was at work. Wasn't there a P-38 one year?
-
The P-38 was here last year but, not this time. I think the guys who brought it ou last year, are flying the A-36 in it's place.
It's on all weekend, Jimson.
-
Ah well, unless they are up before 11:00 am, I may not get a glimpse this time.
-
Dang..... I ran out of pictures before I ran out of lookin'.
:aok :aok
-
This is outside my front door (RV camp at DM) and a shot of what was flying overhead this afternoon. I also include a shot of mi casa, the car and goldwing under the cover are ours too. All I have is a cheap pocket camera so nothing worthwhile for flying pix. But you can still be jealous. :devil
The last is a stang, a jug, a F4 and an A10.

Are those F-4s privately owned or do we still have a few in the inventory?
-
They are still in the USAF inventory as full scale drone conversion and located at Holloman AFB, NM and Tyndall AFB, FL. Today, one of the crew chiefs told me that the F-4 drone program is forecast out until 2016. F-16s are next.

Oh so they can be flown as target drones and be piloted in the same airframe?
Or is this somewhere in between becoming a drone and being taken from the junk yard?
-
They are taken out of storage at AMARC (i.e. the boneyard) and flown to another location, modified with the "drone" equipment, and then flown to either of the previously mentioned bases. Yes, they can be flown "manned" after they are drone modified. The ones that show up at the Heritage Flight Conference and airshows are kept in a more presentable state than the average drone.

To see a P-40, an A-10, and an F-4 all in the air together... I would have pitched a tent. NOT camping.
The thought of Phantoms, some of the sexiest, most beautiful aircraft ever, being used for target practice....... that makes Baby Jesus cry.

I may have to

Yes indeed! Imagine how the guys who flew them feel! It's great to see them growling around the pattern at full grunt. No other sound like the Rhino.

One of my more memorable experiences was standing about 10 foot to the side of full afterburner trim run at Moody AFB. The
air inside my chest was vibrating even with my hand over my chest :lol
It sort of looked like this one from Danang, but daylight in Georgia :D

Times have changed. While I was stationed there they were converting F-100s to drones at AMARC. :lol

Fantastic pics! :aok

I have never seen an operational F-4 that was shiny.
When a crew rotated stateside from Udorn they'd snap a pix of 'em on the crew boarding ramp or standing by it ..
..saw the crewcheif wipe the side of the plane down with brake fluid to make it 'shiny' for the photo .. LOL.
Then they would tow the plane to the paint hangar ..cause brake fluid did a number on the paint-stencils-etc.
The paint itself wasn't even semi-gloss ..it was flat camo.
-just sayin (tm Pasha)

(worked every F-4 type in the USAF inventory and one that wasn't .. Luftwaffe version of the F-4E, the F-4H if I remember correctly)

That F4 is badass :aok

I did not know about this and even if I did the night shift would have interfered with my being up to see it. I have only heard of one other Tucson AHer. We should get together at the Pima Air and Space Museum.

There's at least 4 of us.
Me, Maverick, you and Puma44
I'd be up for a Tucson AH get together. No better place than the museum.
-
We will be heading out of town by next weekend if things go as we expect. We won't be back until next December.
-
Puma do you have a site with the full res shots? ARWs would be nice too (or whatever your RAW format is).

Welp, plans changed. That happens when you cast them in jello. It looks like we'll be here another week getting a repair taken care of. Parts won't be in until next week.

Mustangs :aok But photobucket screws up everything.

I'd be happy to help you out. Although, I didn't shoot in RAW. New camera, still learning the ropes. If you have any ideas, I'm all ears.
-
Oh my! Jpg destroys the best of the images. Which camera do you have?
I think (depending on the camera you have) it actually uses less card space to record in raw because it doesnt have to keep the raw AND the jpg. If your camera didnt come with a conversion utility or you dont have Photoshop you might be stuck. Adobe may have a free conversion program also.
Flickr might work as a place to upload... or Dropbox. Dropbox basic which is free gives 2GB of space. The problem is sharing on Dropbox which you have to decide on. Its really better for groups of people in photography classes or business groups.
Flickr limits you to 20mb per image and that means one image with a 16 or 18 MP camera. 300MB per month also limits you to 15 images of that size.
Windows Live Photo Gallery (Free) gives you 25GB and is quickly becoming the most popular.
Complete list (more or less): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_photo_sharing_websites

I've got a Nikkon D3100 and shot the aerials with a 55-200 lense. Thanks for the info. Obviously, I'm still learning the fine points of photography. I'm out of town until Thursday night and will check on the programs you mention after that.

Well the point in using the raw information isnt critical in the end. I prefer it because it gives a closer representation of the original colors for post-processing. Jpeg limits the possibilities but the point of posting RAW for me is so that the resolution isnt lost as it is with photobucket. You are sharing in the OC so of course with so many pics you want the load time to be minimal. If you had some you wanted to share at full res you would also want to warn viewers that they were HD. In digital design we have lower limits of 10MP for submissions and 32MP for competition/publication/advertising and of course HDR is 72MP with all three contrasts submitted as well. I use a 16MP myself because I am not competing and in digital design you sometimes get things you want captured to video.
I use a Sony Alpha SLT-a35 and chose it for the 60fps 1080p stereo sound (for syncing to HD digital) and because it allows me to use legacy Minolta lenses (some with and some without an adaptor). Your camera is better for night shoots which I dont do and might actually be better for dimmer lit timed exposures.
Anyway... sorry for taking it off topic.
