Been trying to resist the urge to build a new machine. But Krap this is getting expensive.
So far i2500k - $210 with coupon
MB http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130572 $140 without $30 rebate
Memory http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231311 $42
Hard drive: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136075 $80
Still no case, PS, and DVD drive. That's 472 bucks. May have to wait since the case will be around a $100, VC around $150, the PS around $120, and DVD somewhere near $20. I guess you can add windows 7 as well. That could add up to an additional $500 bucks easy.
I really liked one of the cases Tildeath had but I can't remember the brand and model. Not sure about the VC because there are two many marketing schemes out there these days.

Rich uses mostly NZXT cases. Your probably thinking of the Phantom.
The Lexa-S is alright too.
-
I have the Lexa S, love it.

I had one of those and gave it to my daughter.

Okay, now almost everything except the Video card and the Video card dilemma makes me want to forget it.
Added these to the list
Phantom: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811146086
Power Supply: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151095
DVD; http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827151252
Current total is $692. I can use a copy of Windows XP temporarily.
Any recommendations on a VC? I'd like to keep it under $150 bucks.
Also any thoughts on the MB or anything else for that matter?

If youre building for AH or other games, i2500k + 150 bucks for videocard is like getting a Ferrari with a Ford Pinto engine.

I figured as such :)

but the chassis is able to be updated to a proper engine in the future.
With that PS, your going to have to look at Radeon in the 6700 series or such. I'm an Nvidia guy, so I can't help much in that dept.

That's what I figure. It's the video card that is keeping me from pulling the plug. Those things can get up there in price. But I tell you this AH is not heavily dependent on GPU as much as it is on CPU. At least it hasn't been according to Skuzzy.

getback then wait a month or two, it will be worthy.

Yeah, I got it all in my saved list. I'm going to wait. Though I may by that cool red case as an ornament.

I have this on order

I was gonna do a major total rebuild but I decided to upgrade some parts only and the case is one of them.
the other thing I upgraded was to 2 of these

I think it might be a little overkill but why not..

Holy crap almost $1,400 for those video cards.

If i may also suggest get the z68 version the p67 is the one i have but you may want to get the upgraded one. you never know what useless crap they're gonna add later on and might as well be ready for it :). thing I love about my msi is the sound, it's just as good as a separate sound card that will cost you 1/2 as much as the mobo.
this is what i got. it's out of stock and more than happy with it. but that is so 6 months ago :).

I agree, but some have a budget for toys. He's probably not just getting back to work like you are.

you need to tell me all about that case... been drooling about buying it since before it came out... only thing preventing me from buying it is I dont have $185.00. at this point if i had $185.01 I would buy it......
-
Let me know how you like that Switch thing...I was looking into getting one myself.

lawndart is actually a billionaire who drives trucks as a hobby :). ok j/k actually he saves his change to buy his toys. I do the same thing. I'll think about buying something till i save the money to buy it. it ook me 2 years to get the computer upgraded to where i want it :). thing is patience and make sure you buy with the option to upgrade. last upgrade cost me about 200 bucks out of my pocket after selling my old parts. and I sold them for way less than what I bought them. but when i got my new parts i got them on sale and went to places like amazon for free shipping and no sales tax.
that's where the long term thing comes in, you buy what you can afford but the money you can afford spend it wisely with the option to upgrade later if it ever comes to it. if you were to buy an e6400 right now it would get you a good puter that will play ah really good. but you wont be able to sell it to finance your future upgrade. well of course future upgrades depends on finding a buyer too.

After 3+ years of being unemployed I'm a bit timid about spending anything. Yesterday was the first day I splurged a wee bit and bought a new computer chair. Most goes into the savings and to pay off bills. I'm satisfied with my progress so far.
I'm going to post a short story on this in the O'Club.

Getback:
PM me, I have a video card and a psu for you. Not the set the world on fire kind but they will get you in the cartoon skies.

You're a good man Charlie Brown. :aok

HD 6850 gc.. maybe just over 150... depending on specials or rebates... Just built a i5/6850 system. runs 60fps with everything maxed out.
-
NewEgg sent me a flyer with an LG DVD drive for 15 or 16 bucks. I'm grabbing it.

Man, you must be holy friggen rich, 1300 bucks for video cards, when a 150 bucks one can run AH maxed out, and a 300 bucks one can give you 65-70% of the performace of the dual 580s (and also runs every existing game maxed out on 3 monitors...)
-
Don't buy two video cards unless you absolutely have too, why? its a waste of money. I bought one Nvidia 580 and its more then enough to handle Aces high with a 30 inch moniter on full graphics.
No other game has dipped me below 60 FPS on full graphics either.

Thanks to Tom I decided to order all the other parts for the new build <Gulp>. Got that beautiful NZXT red phantom case. Tom is providing me with what I think is a very nice card and a power supply. In the end, not counting rebates I spent $612. Not bad I think. There are $40 worth of rebates and a $10 gift certificate. That VC card was holding me up. It just took me too far out of budget.
-
No problem, I hope it gets there soon for ya. Gotta love the USPS, but UPS is too expensive.

It arrived today!! That card is beautiful! I'm going to swap the PS you gave me with one in one of my computers. The computer that has a micro board.
Thanks a bunch Tom!

Question about the Phantom. It has 3 pin connectors and a molex. Does the molex handle all 3 fans or do I need to plug in those 3 pins to the motherboard. The problem with the 3 pins is they are male and the ones on the mb are male as well. So I would need to convert them to female some way.
Addendum: Figured it out. My brain was fried last night.
-
Phantom is a beautiful case. the case has an onboard fan controller, one slider for each set of fans. from rear to front of cas they are: rear, top, LD side, side HDD and front HDD. the side HDD and front HDD have the option for two fans, two connectors for this on the controller, along with the top. I got my phantom used from Rich so it had all the fans hooked up, but you wont need to populate any of the 3-pin connecters on your board to hookup the fans, nor will you need a Molex 4-pin from your supply.

460 GT is a good card for AH.

Gee Getback, you sure do enjoy your computers. That makes how many in the last 3 years? For me, only 1. :D

The last one I built for myself was in early 2008. I built one for my mom and my daughter. They paid for the parts. I was broke broke broke!
But yes I really enjoy the build. Always some issues but darn it is one of the funnest things. Then I get to laugh at myself for stupid mistakes and curse the parts after spending hours trying to get a part to work that is bad from the get go.
