Title: Skip bombing
Post by: scottak on March 04, 2012, 09:45:45 PM
I think there should be skip bombing in the game because, from what I've seen, there are ALOT of people in fighters doing low level bombing runs from around 50-70 ft. in the air, so what I've come up with, while i know its not "original", is skip bombing. When some one flys low(50-100 ft.) and they drop their bomb/s, they should hit the water, skip, and strike there target and explode. This is usefull because it finally allows people to bomb low and not worry about their bomb missing or not detonating from being dropped too low. It also makes for a fast get away.

Oh dear god... I knew it was coming.

Bombs' arming altitude in AH is 250/300 feet AGL IIRC? Correct me if I'm wrong.

I would think you'd just been pwned by a tank or something, just before you popped at the dar ring. No, they wouldn't skip off the ground :rofl

There is no height requirements for arming a bomb, the bomb just needs to travel 1000ft for it to arm.

That's what I meant, but I don't think it's 100 feet

Im pretty sure the USArmy and Navy tests indicated that a drop altitude of 50-70 feet means the airplane is likely to kill itself.

That still wont change the fact that it is 1000ft

What?

What I'm trying to say with my really terrible communication skills, is that bombs, when dropped below 2/300 feet, will not explode.

I'd love to pay tribute to Barnes Wallis and Guy Gibson  by bouncing a bomb at a CV from like 2k away and watch everyone on the CV shout

"INCOMING!"    then  BOOM Lanc has 5 kills on all the coward 5" ers and revenge for the 999th time auto puffy ack has 1 hit pwned me being nowhere near the CV at everything from 3.01k to   21k, from 200  to 500mph,  It don't matter the grim reamer will take his next un-willing victim.    :ahand

before everyone states the obvious and that the bomb was designed for dams well we don't have any dams and the bombs bounce on water and the only thing on the water is a CV!

I've read of B25s using this against Japanese shipping.

Skip bombing was widely used in the PTO during anti-shipping missions until replaced by the more accurate masthead bombing technique.

I notice a key phrase - 'anti-shipping.' Wouldn't this indicate attacking merchants?

What is masthead bombing?

In masthead bombing the plane usually attacks at less than 500 feet and the bomb is dropped so close to the target that computation is simple and accuracy high. If the target is a ship, the bomb is released to hit near the waterline just before the plane pulls up to pass over the target. Delay fuzes are employed to give the aircraft time to clear the target. Surprise is highly desirable because the plane is exceedingly vulnerable to AA fire.

This was the Blackcat's favored method of attack against ships.  Sometimes the attack runs were as low as 30ft off the water.

lol but it needs a time delay so that it wont explode on the water. any one hear want parafrags ( bombs with parachutes)?

Parafrags would be neat, if I say I would like them, will you be able to make them appear in the game?

Along with modeling stuff in the game that would make modeling para-frags mean something?

Like field guns, AAA and all the other targets at an airfield.

What's a para-frag advantage there? Para-frags were small (20 lb or so) cluster bombs designed to take out infantry and aircraft on the ground. They were used mainly on aircraft revetments in WWII. The game's not designed to give such an ord any type of advantage, what-so-ever.

Bombing targets designed to hold water would be fun, too bad nobody gives a dam.

Hehe ... while I appreciate the pun and the potential ... one instance of a dozen bases and/or strats and/or cities getting flooded (not captured but flooded) and inop for however long would cause a community to revolt.  :D
