Title: A question for those who are great with history
Post by: Pigslilspaz on March 07, 2012, 03:17:38 AM
I've been trying to make a list of companies that contributed to the war effort on all sides of WWII, that do something other than war/defense industries nowadays, such as Boeing makes airliners, Mitsubishi made the A6M but now makes cars, and Daimler Benz, nowadays associated with the Mercedes, made tank and aircraft engines.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

There's a Borden Chemical plant not too far from where I live that makes plastic for shrink wraps now, but during WW2 it made explosives.  My grandfather was an armed security guard at the plant until he joined the Navy and became a SeaBee and went to the Pacific.

If I remember correctly, ( no I did not research it to be sure)  John Deere made transmissions, final drives, and some of the front castings for tanks.  I think Shermans, and maybe 1 or 2 others.

Hyundai...  Well the guy who went on to found Hyundai operated a garage in occupied Korea and since the only people who were operating cars and trucks in occupied Korea were Japanese Military types, he'd rip them off at every opportunity.

After the war he expanded his company and began building military bases for the Nato forces during the Korean war.

Cadillac built the M5 Stuart light tank

Studebaker (technically still in existance, if only on paper, though I read investors have been working on restarting the company and building new cars - but I give that less than a snowball's chance) built radial aircraft engines, for the B-17 among others.

Remington-Rand, a company that made typewriters and other such office equipment geared up to produce the 1911A1 .45ACP pistol.

There are LOTS of everyday companies that contributed to the war effort.

Ford stamped an F on nearly every component of the Jeeps they built.  Most of the nuts and bolts included so that they wouldn't have to warranty any other producer's equipment.

Interesting bit of historical trivia I learned this week, is that Zeppo Marx of Marx brothers fame, was also an engineer.

After his comedy career he started a company called Marman Products (which lives on today as Aeroquip) famous for the "Marman clamp" which was the clamp used to hold the atomic bomb "Fat Man" detonated over Nagasaki in the bomb bay of the B-29.  Legend has it that Zeppo himself designed the clamp.

GM built fighter aircraft.

Grumman built a TBF assembled with PK screws (sheet metal screw) so that GM could dis-assemble it with ease to learn how to build the TBM.

Its a Porsche King Tiger

Porsche King Tiger lost to Henschel proposal. "Porsche turret" is in fact the turret Krupp originally designed for the rejected Porsche vehicle, adapted for the Henschel. So nothing Porsche in constructed King Tigers

The only Porsche design that reached production stage is the  Ferdinand (for Ferdinand Porsche)/Elephant (http://www.achtungpanzer.com/panzerjager-tiger-ferdinand-elephant.htm). Offspring of the also rejected Porsche proposal for Tiger I.

Dupont invented Teflon for use in our atomic bombs.

The bomb engineers felt a need to encase the core of the bombs with something totally inert and solid.
They found out later that it's great for frying pans too.
