This is correct. TBF= Torpedo Bomber F is the Identifier for Grumman.
TBM = Torpedo Bomber M is the identifier for General Motors.
For Naval Aircraft
C= Curtis SB2C
F= Grumman F4F/F6F/TBF
D= Douglas TBD/SBD
M= General Motors TBM/FM-2
U = Chance Vought F4U
G= General Motors FG1
A= Brewster F2A/F2A-2

The IJN used a similar system:
A = Carrier fighter
B = Carrier bomber
D = Carrier dive bomber
G = Land based bomber
H = Flying boat or Reconnaissance (not sure which)
J = Land based interceptor
L = Transport
N = Float plane fighter
A = Aichi
D = Douglas
K = Kawanishi
M = Mitsubishi
N = Nakajima
Y = Yokosuka
Hence:
A = Carrier fighter
6 = Sixth aircraft in that role
M = Mitsubishi
5 = Mark five
b = Second minor variant
N = Float plane fighter
1 = First aircraft ordered for that role
K = Kawanishi
2 = Mark two
-J = Modified to be a land based interceptor

One of them is flown in aces high and one of them isn't.
Wait... Nevermind, they're basically the same plane.

The only difference between the TBM, and the TBF is where they were built.

The only difference between the TBM, and the TBF is where they were built.
and by whom
-
Bethpage NY = TBF
Trenton NJ = TBM
:D
If I remember correctly there were far more TBM's manufactured than TBF's.
:cheers:

i think you're right....because grumman was building so many fighters, they needed gm to step up to the plate, and build more of these.
