What amazes me is the fact that you can now pick up an airworthy L-39 for less money then a late model Cessna 172.

What REALLY amazes me is that you can pick up a '80s L-39 for less money then a 70's Super Cub, hmmm.  380mph cruise for $90k, or 90mph cruise for $120K.  (I'm just bitter because I want a Super Cub, and while resale value for most single engine pistons have plummeted in recent years, Super Cubs still fetch a premium)

The problem with L-39s is affording to feed and maintain those turbofans.

I know a guy with a Fouga Magister who told me the operating cost was well north of 2k/hr.

Heck a marginally equipped skyhawk even with a mid-time engine will sell for more than most light twins. Super Cubs are working airplanes, why they fetch such a hefty price. Skyhawks are the same way - there will always be a market for them with flight schools and weekend warriors.

Nail on the head in the last sentence.

You get what you pay for.  An older airframe, especially an older eastern bloc built airframe gets very costly really quick to keep and try and maintain.  While parts abound, costs are a rising and the only guys really operating these birds these days have deeeeeeeeeeeep wallets.  That means for the layman, they are nigh impossible to afford without group purchasing.  That is simply a recipe for disaster when it comes to high performance jets.

I had the chance to buy a very nice Fouga a few years back and I passed.  The reason, cost to operate, continually maintain, and the kicker we have not touched on until now, maintain.

No, it is a bird that was in CA.  Knew the people that owned and operated it, was a gem, but again, reality is the cost per hour to operate.  As I understand, the Fouga is a bargain compared to the L-39.

It wasn't red white and blue was it?

We have four fougas on field "in flying condition" and there are 2-3 frames that were used for spares. They were the Aircraft used for a jet flight team based n the field. The planes are mainly blue with red and white accent strips. The last time they flew was nearly 5 years ago. Since then, one was sold and went to California, then was resold and again came back home. All American jet team was the name I believe.

As for the l-39, the biggest issue with them is really maintenance costs. Had a friend looking into getting one or an l-29 until he really got into cost analyst of it all.

Last year was their first year as the heavy metal jet team.... They flew out of Lancaster county. But now they are out of Lakeland Florida :(

While the videos look good, there performance last year wasn't all that great.
