Title: Any sword experts out there?
Post by: Klam on March 11, 2012, 12:38:11 PM
I was raking through some old junk I had stashed under the stairs when I came accross this..........

blade is apporox 24" and the handle 7"

It has some details stamped into the hilt of the blade and the number 1834
into the bottom of the brass handle

I have no idea of it's origin or use.  I don't think it was ever used in anger.
It looks more like a dress sword.

Any ideas?

BK could possibly mean "Black Knight" they are a sword maker. so look around on their item list and see if you can find this sword on there.

I dont think its civil war era because I've got a few civil war relics that have been passed down. I have a confederate sword that looks alot older then this. Could be wrong but I'd date it in the early 1900s

Did a quick google search for a brass pommel utility sword, and found this... I think we have a winner:

[EDIT:  Or at least a replica]

I live in England. No idea of the age or origin, although I've had it for at least 20yrs.

With the bend at the top for hacking and the serrated edge, it's definitely more of a machete` or utility sword at the very least.

Ames Sword Co.   Nathanial Peabody

the bronze work contracted to Sam Huse from 32 to 34

It's civil war and prolly worth a good penny specially with the scabbard.

Just My Guess,

Edit: my second guess  :D ...Reading you live in London

Its a French Infantry sword of around 1831 and the were exported to the Confederates.

I think the one side of the sword was damaged and was modified at a later date.

I have no clue what it is but it does appear to be old, dont clean it in anyway it's worth more with original patina on it

It looks like a French Infantry short sword that the blade has been altered on.  Which I believe someone else already said.   If it's authentic, it's in very good condition.  Except of course the altered blade.

I saw one on an auction site that sold for $1000

I was going to suggest that it was a sword intended for the theater but it turns out this is an example of a hunting sword used to finish off game.
