Is there a general consensus on the identification of targets? Or is it to each his own?
This is what we use but I've seen guys start the numbering from the SW quadrant.

Different Squads use different conventions.
-
Most I know start with the spawn hanger as 1, and go clockwise... Never bothered with numbering conventions for anything other than hangers
-
POTW is destroy everything and kill everyone...no need for numbers :aok
-
We just put a big X in the middle and try to hit that.

That is because our P38s were not equipped bomb sights. Durn those designers for forgetting that detail.

My p-38 becomes a guided missle as I auger into target. :airplane:

Trukk,
Every numbered map that I have encountered was done the way you're quadrant map points out. What I like about the above picture where you actually draw mid lines north / south and east / west, it helps a great deal to imagine the actual field target.
Hotard starting with the spawn hangar (only helps with Vehicle Base maps). I have also found it a lot clearer when assigning Vehicle Hangers at a vbase to assign them by their surroundings. For example "radar hangar" conventional system 1, "spawn hangar" conventional 2, "twin hangar (left/right)" conventional 3 and 4, gives the assigned bomber some visual clues. Other descriptive adjectives commonly used, "big pad, small pad, stand alone, and the newly added Storch hangar".
The best use of the number system gives both hangar number and surrounding clues. Remember there are maps and fields (usually ports) that are not laid out in the same direction as the maps.

No surprise, P-38s can't dive bomb worth a crap; even your dive flaps can't help you. :devil

... or "hit the thing over there not burning".
Of course using the term HIT in our squad will usually result in a bunch of 38s colliding with said point of reference.

A perfect horde mentality answer.
No need to assign targets because most of the horde can't hit what they are aiming for any way. Also, you have soooooo many bombs that missing with 80% is ok, there are plenty to pick up the slack.
Not picking on the POTW here, for all we know Junky has once again engaged his mouth without starting the old brain :devil However this is becoming more and more the mind set with players today. I join missions more often than not as most of my squad is in semi retirement and when I have a mission leader come out with "bomb everything until is all down" I just roll out of formation and go look for a different fight.
More often than not I fly with the 365th FBG Hell Hawks. They are a fun group to fly with, and they are pretty talented when it comes to playing the game. Missions are organized, but there is no "yes sir, no sir" crap. Everyone has a bit in the mission and the "team" is counting on you to do your part. These guys do it right, I wish more squads would.
-
The maps we use are numbered from top to bottom.

Fugi, your troll attempt is weaksauce just like your ACM.

If only we all could be like Fugitive ...inaccurate, opinionated, and quick to slam anyone other than those that think like you do. TROLL EXTRAORDANAIRE :aok

I guess both you clowns have a hard time reading, I made it really big this time in the quote above, and I though I used small enough words for you guys to get it, I'm NOT picking on the POTW!!! What I WAS pointing out is an attitude that is becoming more and more prevalent in the game, and that is less tactics, more numbers.
Of course rising to "defend" your squads honor so quickly may of course fit under the old saying "...I think you doth protest too much" in which case ..... well I'll just let it go at that. Ya'll will do a much better job of making yourselves look stupid than I could :aok
-
I know what you were saying, pretty sure I can bring up threads showing how I'm one of the...loudest voices against destroying FHs, overkill and such, where you found your gap for a clever troll was my wording for POTW being less organized when we hit a base.
A troll is still a Troll :aok We just got eachothers backs in POTW :rock

I want to focus on what Fugitive said about depending on each other to do our parts.
I have had some confusion on assignments even though they were clearly stated, using both numbering and location clues. I like to be able to hit the target I was assigned or at the very least be able to identify that I missed.
Even the ability to know that you recognize that you hit the wrong target can be the difference in working as a cohesive unit and just making a lot of noise. Hangar banging has been referred to in terms that are equally as dismissed as hording, and both have an important role in driving game play and drawing out defensive players to engage.
Getting bombers lined up and assigned to hit specific targets is like herding cats (not my words, and I can't remember who said it.... but fits the situation very well). Actually, it is a welcome sight to have escorts and jabos tagging along to finish the job.

The old airfields/v base seemed to be easier to call out where they were by what they were near....new hangars are harder to see because of other things on base(at least to me)

"Kill what's still up"?

Rob52240 aka vWNTRGRN, vPUB321 is fond of saying running missions is like that, and I agree wholeheartedly. Most players don't take the time to learn the skills needed to succeed with skill and tactics and so they run with the rest of the cats lobbin bombs every which way. It is what a horde depends on. That is why you won't see a "mission leader" split up his mission as the numbers grow because they KNOW they can't count on the players to get the jobs done with out all that extra support.
As the game continues, more and more people will join the horde because it is human nature to take the easier path and so the horde will become the norm.

So, I have read 2 posts that have different target designation. The one that I have seen most frequently is the one in Trukk's original post. I was very interested in this question (not just because he is my CO :neener: ) but rather because the bomber / jabo (tool shedder) bug bit me long ago, and as Junky points out the last generation of fields have moved along with a number of additions and things to confuse as your primary target.
Pand has done a great job as well as many others probably in making maps with designations added to targets. I even played with the idea of color coding certain zones to help with quick positioning of bombers and assignment of targets.
:rofl It wasn't until right now that I recognize that Pand's designation (which I have set as default for Medium field) is different, and therefore my confusion on targets :o Instead of clockwise designation they are numbered top to bottom. It seems that herding cats is even more difficult when the cats have different meanings for the same commands. :lol
Notice the Blue and Red Zones have the most High Value field targets. Therefore attacking from the south I would assign most bombers through the middle and eastern portions of the base.

Thanks for the input guys. We'll stick with what we have as that appears to be just as good a standard as anything.
One thing I don't get though (and since it popped up in this thread) are these "aw shucks" posts by P-38 drivers. Sure it has it's strengths and weaknesses, but it's a very competitive fighter and we do very well in them.
-
Suggestion: HTC coordinate with whomever (1 person or a designated advisory group) and standardize the numeration and/or colorization of the maps when they are being developed or have them submitted (like skins) for adoption/approval by HTC for implementation game wide. Standardization! What a concept. :rofl
-
Fugative, must you hijack every thread with your invaluable advice about how everyone else should play? Seriously.
We get it, you don't like the way people play.
We've heard your reasons countless times.
"You'll never improve flying like that"
"The way you play ruins the game"
ad infinitum.
Give it a rest already mate <S>.

we could wish for the in game maps to be edited to have numbers on them.

1 guy for the VH, another for backup.
3 guys for any GVs that got out and de acking.
1 Bomber for town.
2 guys for town deack.
1 goon.
2 guys fly high fighter cap at all times.
10 people is all you need for a base.

I see your 10 and (raise?) you to 3.
1 P47 to drop VH and town guns
1 Wirble in town
1 troop drop
15 min later and we post a new color flag and declare "This Is Sparta!"

Seeing as this forum is for information and discussions of the game I will continue to use it as such. If you don't like what I post don't read it. If your eyes are continuously drawn to my posts due to the powerful typing I employee you can use the handy little function called "ignore". It can be found by clicking on "Profile" link in the header of this page and then click on "Personal Message Options". There you can add my name to the big white box and never have to worry about being caught reading one of my posts.
See, I was helpful by providing information and once again using this board as intended. Unlike how you did. :aok

ahhh yes, another "porker" heard from I KNOW you didn't understand what I posted and you prove it so well in your reply here. You have a problem reading and writing.
Your name is spelled "Semp", not "smep".
-
Grace us with thy wisdom Fugi, your words are so powerful. :pray
-
The ignore function only half works in that you can still see that the user posted. Not really worth the bother. Too bad, I would have liked that feature.

I'm sorry I upset you sir, like you, I was only offering you an opinion. AND sir, I am as far from "a porker" as you can get.
FYI I actually agree with you most of the times. I avoid fighting "with" hordes, but I actually love diving into an enemy horde and try to get a kill or 2 or 3 or 4.
It is your relentless belaboring of your transparent opinion here, and with many of your cartoon themes, that I ask you to curtail. ASK sir, not demand.
Thanks

Ahhh you can get over yourself, you didn't upset me at all. As I said, you don't like my posts, don't read them.
oh and by the way had you "read" the last post I made you would have seen that the "porker" comment was under the quote from Semp. In BBS parlance that usually means that the comment refers to the quoted text, and so had nothing to do with you.
The ignore function only half works in that you can still see that the user posted. Not really worth the bother. Too bad, I would have liked that feature.
True it's not perfect, but it does make it easier to remember you don't really care to read some peoples posts. I have a few on my list and there are always many more vying for the chance to be next on the list. I'm sure I'm on a few people list too, but to each his own.

what you gonna complain now that people no longer can spell their names correctly and so they're missing a great part of ah? if you notice 1/2 the time i spell my name smep instead of semp. mostly because i cant tell the difference at the time I am writing it.
