Title: landing gear damage that unlocks the gear and adds drag
Post by: Citabria on March 22, 2012, 12:26:36 PM
would be fun  to see landing gear that can be shot up and dislodged so it dangles and adds a lot of drag. the odds of sturdy equipment like landing gear falling of are much lower than it malfunctioning and partially lowering into the airstream from the videos I have seen of landing gear being hit.

This might be cool in situations where you're flying at less than 250mph, otherwise I'd think the higher speed would instantly sheer it off or actually work in favor on some a/c of lodging/jamming it broken but still in place/attached.

At those low speeds it might actually creat some really interesting randomness to the knife fights.

I think this would be the same category as engines taking hits and putting out less power. In other words... isnt going to happen.

#1  nothing more annoying that seeing a plane with 1/2 a wing and all shot up to hell still flying at full speed.  time to coad things like this.  hydraulics hits and all kinds of things go down or hard to control in your plane.

They don't fly at full speed but rather something considerably lower.

They don't. Only one or two planes can actually fly nearly straight and level with half a wing (depending on which one) due to their torque balancing it out/trim. All the others, there has to be some sort of rudder work involved or else the plane flips. And when you use rudder, your plane is not "streamlined" against the wind/air. Your plane is slightly angled so that the airstream impacts the side of the plane, creating drag.

Only plane that I ever had zero problems flying straight and level with half a wing was the F4U-4 (a little trim and it was flying straight and level), Tempest (again, massive torque and little trim did the trick), and Ki-84 (I don't know why, torque is little compared to the other two, but again, bit of trim solved it).

i have chased way too many airplanes that only had 1/2 a wing on my pony to know that this is highly inaccurate.   most I can catch but some like the la7 will actually pull away from me.  which is a bug as the drag created on the longer wing should be compensated by the rudder which in itself should create a bit of drag and slow the plane down.  but that is not the case.  actually in my pony i can do full speed with 1/2 a wing.  that shouldnt really happen.

this is one of those things like being able to drop bombs while upside down that has never been fixed for whatever reason.

^ This.  G14, K4, D9 and even the 152 don't mind missing half a right-wing at all, especially if you have plenty of WEP/max-torque to spare.  The left wing though is an entirely different beast (unless, and I have had this happen, you luck out and get the left flap shot/damaged with only one or at most two clicks of deployment... leaves me :x and running at high speed on the deck and the bandit: :devil >  :O >  :huh >  :furious .   Don't get me wrong, I'm with the "I wish damaged flaps would get blown-up/ripped-off at high speed crowd".
