I saw it over the weekend and thought it was little more than a remake of the film 'Battle Royale' with a lot of hollywood dressing.
Battle Royale was a much better film and far more original. It was also conceived from experiences during WW2.

I liked it because it was true to the books.

I only got halfway through the first book. I'd heard all the reviews that this was going to be the next Harry Potter.
I don't know what all those people are smoking... it sucked, BIG time. Cliche plot, 1 dimensional character, 1st person present tense writing :headscratch: seemed like it was written by a 4th grader, in fact I've READ stuff by 4th graders that was far better.
All in all I thought it was the worst young adult novel I'd ever tried to read, and I've read quite a few of them. I cannot fathom how it is so popular.

Because its simple. It wasnt a hard read so alot of people read it. I liked it because I like to place myself in their shoes and constantly ask "is that what i would do?"

I'm watching it as I type this...

Battle Royal is exactly what I said when someone started describing the plot to me... I used to have the painting from that flick as my background at work until corporate said it was inappropriate... :devil

When I say it's poorly written I don't mean that because they didn't use big obscure words, or have long philosophical soliloquies. I mean it's just poorly written, halfway through the book and I only knew 2 things about the main heroine, that she is a hunter, and she loves her little sister... and the book is written from her point of view, and I know virtually nil about any other character.
There are PLENTY of books that are easy and simple to read for even 3rd or 4th grade level reading that are SO much better written. Take "The Chronicles of Narnia" for instance, super easy to read, yet still incredible books on so many levels. Or how about Brian Jacques "Redwall" series, or one more modern series I read some of just a few weeks ago, called "The Rangers Apprentice" by John Flanagan. They're are about a 4th grade reading level, and short enough I could finish one in >2 hours, and not really deep or philosophical at all, they are just fun entertaining stories that are much, much better then what I read of "The Hunger Games".
For crying out loud, even as much as I HATED "Eragon" for being a complete rip-off-mash-up of Star Wars, Tolkein and Ann McCaffry.. at least it was written in a coherent manner.

While it's well documented and lamented that I have a low threshold for entertainment I actually enjoyed the books (well not as much the third one as the other two) and I saw the movie today. Compared to a lot of the garbage that's been coming out of hollyweird over the last 20 years I'd say it was worth the price of the ticket. I didn't leave going 'oh my gosh what a fantastic movie' but I was entertained.
Are they great works of art? No. Do they have entertainment value? Yes.
If you hate them so much I'd suggest you sit down and attempt to write something better.
It's funny that I said more than once today that The Hunger Games was going to be the next popular thing to bash. Thanks for proving me right sir.

I refuse to watch a movie about a book called "hunger games"

I liked the movie...

Won't see it. No interest in watching teens kill each other in a movie.
:old: Too much realistic looking violence in the movies.
-
I liked the movie...
and i like gorgonzola, swiss, cheddar, mozarella, monterrey jack, pepper cheeses...
-
I saw it tonight. It was ok. Not great, not terrible.

I remember a saying about a book, a cover, and something about not judging it.

I love to eat food and games, so I'll probably check it out. Does the movie share some of the recipes? :O

of course but the real trick is to do it without judging the person that judged a book by the cover. :devil

I never judged. :ahand

I never judge out loud. Life is much funnier this way. :devil

The book was meant to be for a younger crowd, but attracted a broader group of readers. I haven't read nor seen the movie, but I do know that about it. It may explain some opinions about one dimensional characters, etc. The author didn't want it going of the heads of squeakers.

After seeing the Hunger Games I said to my self,"I wanna use a bow". I'll probably be a punk and use a crossbow.

If I ever take a trip to the UK, I'm gonna have Batfink teach me how to use a bow... :D

I actually saw this with some fellow (but much younger) college students at Purdue this past weekend. I liked it, but they liked it a lot more, except for one guy who said they butchered it compared to the book. I haven't read the book, haven't read or seen Harry Potter (except I saw half of the first movie on TV), no Twilight or whatever else Hunger Games can be compared to. So in that regard, I'm a clean slate.
I thought the actors were indistinguishable in age from college students, even if they were supposed to be high school aged. I thought Woody Harrelson was really good. I thought the female lead was pretty good, but she didn't look strong enough to do some of what she did (but not nearly as bad as all the waif-fu movies you see). That said the girl in True Grit was 10x better. I thought the male lead was so-so. I thought the plot had some serious problems that my college-aged friends who had read the book explained away as the result of the book being simplistic and aimed at 13 year olds.
All in all I thought it was good but not great. From the sales numbers people are quoting, expect 2-5 sequels.
