Title: Photos from a tour in the US Navy around 1930
Post by: Karnak on March 25, 2012, 07:58:07 PM
A member of another forum posted a thread I thought some of you guys might be interested in.  It contains a bunch of photos his grandfather took while serving on the USS Tennessee about 1930.

Photos from my grandfather's tour in the Navy, 1930s (56k will get murdered) (http://arstechnica.com/civis/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=1170393)

Hey, those photos are great, thx for sharing.

I liked one forum thread comment though...

"Where are all the fat people?"

Funny question, and a little bit sad too.

'Where are all the fat people?'

Umm ... during the depression?

You do realize the Navy seamen yer lookin at are young guys who all have very physical jobs..
..no elevators in that bad boy battlewagon, all straight up and down ladders.

Heck even I was a skinny kid when I worked the line, walkin 2 miles to fix an F-4, carryin my toolbox, test gear, field jacket ..on any average day.
Didn't put on much weight till I got out of workin on airplanes.

I think the original comment about fat people was mostly about the pics of the civilians.  Even the ones dressed nicely (ie. not laborers) were not chubby at all.

Knowing that forum, it was also highly tongue in cheek and a dig at modern Americans.

What's with the 10-digit clock on the mast?

the 'clock' was part of the tween wars range finder gear
..it let other ships in the formation know what range that big boy was firing at so they could dial in their guns to support it.

Radar eliminated that entirely :)

One of my little ones just joined the Navy :) He won't leave for a few months though.
I supposed I'll have to brush up on more of this Navy history!

I took it as a dig at modern height-weight/PT standards in the Navy, and well justified. We do have quite a few overweight sailors...
