One month of FSO event in WWI era.
-
I'm sorry, Oak.. but there simply is no reason to fly WW1 except for a directed furball.
There are no bombers, strats, targets, ordnance...
Try it on one of the 4th Fridays of the month when there isn't an FSO frame and see what kind of participation you get.
I would be shocked if you kept more than 20 people engaged after 1/2 hour.

I am just getting into WWI history so please forgive my arrogance, but was the air battle mostly furballs?

Only in Ah2. Alot of it was escort duty, recon or bombing.

There was a big push right after the WW1 arena opened for a WW1 FSO. Many wanted it, but the CM's decided to wait until HTC improved the map for ground objects to be destroyed, bombers added and a better map. 2 years later... it's still the same.
All it would be is a Flying Circus if I'm using the right WW1 vernacular for an immense dogfight with all involved.

There are things that could be done but the problem is we would have to build a very special terrain for it to try to make up for things that are not in the game.
We could enable the trucks that running along roads and have them assigned as targets for planes to strafe. But would have to make sure they don't move to fast. Also make sure that a WW1 plane can take them down.
For artillery spotting we could setup bases close to each other or something along those lines so that players could man the 17lb guns or even the 5 inch guns but would need planes to spot for them. Setting up the whole sweep and defend objectives ... basically clear your this area of spotters and then others defend the spotters.
But as said this would be through creating a terrain geared for this.
-
Btw, even with those possible targets not sure if game play would work out or not.
-
Why would you need to re-invent the wheel. Why could you not use the terrains we have now, soften the targets, tone down the guns & enable WWI planes?
You could still have objectives to destroy stuff, just more keyed toward easier targets by machine guns hits.
Just thinkin out loud here :huh

Which terrain would you recommend that still offers event immersion?
What modeled WWI plane carries dropped ord?

I see any WW1 setup as a one frame event like "North Sea Raiders" ie an optional less formal event. There just isn't the planeset right now to consider a regular 3 frame FSO and I have my doubts we would see enough of a consensus amongst the squads to do one and we would have to ask. FSO is mandated to provide a WW2 historic (either hypothetical or not) event. Not post WW2 and not WW1 or any other time frame (Soccer Wars, Korea...) at least not right now. As has been pointed put any design we did do with WW1 in a one-off would essentially be a series of opposing fighter sweeps.

I agree with Squire.
I have spoken some with my guys about this. It would be fun if.....we had everything we need for it...and we don't.
I do however believe I could get the LCA up to do some of the off night, single frame events. Even if it was just a big circus. Twice a year :airplane:

I liked the idea of the WW1 arena originally, but im afraid i havent been there much lately. I do believe anything to spark more interest "over there" would be a great idea, and i could muster some guys from my squad if you are able to put something together.
-
Perhaps we can do this on the off set months where we have an extra Friday.
-
{The GunFighters} are in for a special one frame WWI FSO. I think it would be a lot of fun, and if its a flop we can learn to not do it again or what we can do to make it more successfull. :aok

JG54 is in! we ran USrangers new map this week in the AVA. while it would not support a fso style setup it was lots of fun.
However, in the past I've run a WW1 week in the AVA using the Arden08 map. That works out perfect including using jeeps now and again. I've turned the auto ack down and set the hardness way low so that you could strafe and blow up a auto-gun in the past. its all do-able. just takes some tweaking and imagination. I've found the Arden08 to be the best map for WW1 because the bases are so close together.
