Title: Just got my SAT scores....
Post by: Tank-Ace on March 29, 2012, 08:47:03 PM
Well, I just got my SAT scores, and I scored very well, thank god. I took them as a junior, and during second trimester classes, so I kind of got shafted in the math department, as far as knowing the math goes, and I've never been stellar at writing, but I still did good.

760 in reading, and 540-ish in both math and writing (to lazy to go check the precise numbers, sorry guys  ;)). Hoping to go into Aerospace engineering, so I'll see where this takes me.  Asuming my GPA doesn't drag me down.

I don't want to seem too harsh here...  But I went to Saint Louis University for Aerospace Engineering back in the late 80s and early 90s, 540ish seems a little low for a Math score for an AE.  The math is very heavy.  Very heavy.  If you haven't taken a Calculus class yet, or if you struggled in it at all, you really might be better off looking at other possibilities.

Just something to think about.

That said, if it's your dream, go for it...

Math score needs to get higher.

I'm on the last trimester of trig/pre-calc. Hell, I just learned about vectors on Tuesday.

Was thinking going to retake them and see if I can't get that math score up anyway, but now I'm for sure going to.

Took the act for the first time a couple months ago with no prep for it and scored a 27( as a sophomore). But I don't plan on taking the SAT

You need a higher math score.  If you want to get into a decent engineering school having a 600+ is mandatory. Having over a 700 is ideal and it can easily be achieved.  SAT math is easy you just need to study the type of questions and learn how to solve them either extremely quickly or unorthodoxly(meaning perhaps not the way you would normally solve it in math class).  The SAT math doesn't really test your actual math knowledge.  You don't even need to know Pre-Calc to take the SAT, it isn't on there.

I took the ACT a couple months for the first time as a sophomore too with no prep, and got a 32. If I work on the science portion a little bit, I should be able to get a 34, which is my goal. I just ran out of time and had to guess on like 7 so I would at least have an answer down.

Science killed me had I done better on it my score would have been in the 30s

To be honest, I don't know how I got a 27 on it. I tried my best to wade through the load of crap they dump on you in each information set and get to the what the question was, but it was just overwhelming at some points.

Should I maybe look at taking the ACT's as well?

I would advise taking both as some people are just better at a certain one for some reason or another.

I didn't know what the hell they were talking about on the graph portions and guessed on most of them.

Most schools are now taking the act with a higher regard then the sat so yes I would

This map is pretty accurate on the preferences on whether on SAT or ACT is better.  I know for Virginia schools SAT is preferred although ACT would be "fine".

You have no business deciding that you want to be an Engineer yet.  I'm hoping that you are a Sophomore, or maybe a Junior.  If you are a Senior in trig/pre-calc, you probably won't make it to your second year at a decent engineering school.  It will eat you alive, unless you are really good at calculus and just don't know it yet.  If you're a 2nd semester High School Junior just now learning about vectors, you're going to be way behind.

It's really sad how bad many public schools are.  I was in a Calculus class as a Junior, in 1986.

Most Florida schools accept the act and sat equally as well.

All schools accept both, so that shouldn't be your worry. Instead, focus on doing well on either of them.

Ah but some schools will prefer one test over the other

Maybe 10-20 years ago, but not really anymore.

during second trimester

Trimesters used to only refer to pregnancy.  When you finish, do you get a tit to suck on?  Just wondering.

You'll want to get a really high GPA also if you want to get into a good engineering school. I got a 34 on the ACT (with a perfect 36 on science) and a 2100 cumulative on the SAT but with only a 3.0 GPA I barely got accepted into Cal Poly SLO. Only choice I really liked that I got accepted for was Cal Poly SLO, but couldn't afford 4-5 years of that, so doing first couple years at the CC right next to it and transferring to save money.  I do suggest retaking the math portion if you want to be an engineer though, you definitely want to hit at minimum 600, and shoot for 700's to get a good shot.

If you're finishing HS with Trig, you are going to have some catch-up to do for an AE degree.  You might need to put in an extra year or catch up an extra class or two during the first couple summers.

I had 2 years of calculus before attempting an AE degree and scored a 730 math in 10th grade (before my trig and calculus classes), and I still lasted just one and a half semesters.  Yea it was the USAF academy where the AE track is absolutely brutal, but still I was middle of the road compared to my peers and I just couldn't keep up with the math.

My brother spent 6 years trying to catch up with the math for an AE degree at Embry Riddle, and he ended up with no degree at all for no reason other than he was still struggling with the math at the end of that time.  If you're not realy comfy with math, you need to hit it hard to catch up or pick another track, at least based on my experience.

Dave, I'm a Junior, and we moved out to Washington after 7th grade. The teaching dropped back about 3 grade-levels in math from where we were at in Idaho. I did some summer work to keep from forgetting what I had already learned, and tried to keep moving ahead, and took the highest level math classes freshman year (1 class thats 1/3rd the school year in length of algebra, and 2 classes that are 1/3rd the school year in lenght each of Geometry. That any better Dragon  :furious?).

I'm already going to be doing something called the Running-Start program, where you can take college-level classes in high-school.

Point being, yes, I'm aware of the fact that WA schools are a bit wanting in the math department.

Pigs, my GPA is 3.465 right now, don't know if thats good enough, but hope so.

I'm good with math, every test I've taken save the PSAT and SAT (standardized testing, EOC exams, ASVAB, etc), I've scored up in the 90-99th percentile range. Geometry is a snap, I just have a horrible math teacher this year. I mean really, I just need to work on answering the questions faster to get a better math score.

I think if you score like 800 at math you could be hire at DARPA hehehe

Lol It is not even hard to get a 800.  I got a 730 and I missed one question.

I remember taking the ACT. Even though I knew I wasn't going to college somehow I got convinced to take it just in case. I wound up sitting next to a friend of mine. She actually study for the thing somehow or took some prep course or something. After about ten minutes I said screw this noise and just started filling out the scantron randomly and sleeping for the rest of the time. I got a 28 she got a 26.

Don't 'worry' too much about your math score.  Mine was about 500 out of high school, but I went on to become a registered professional civil engineer.

How?  I worked my tail off in college and got much much better at math.  I used the free tutors at the math lab, and worked problem after problem.  I even failed a few calculus classes, but I never gave up and retook them.

Good luck, I hope engineering is what you really want to do.  It's a lot of hard work.  Aerospace engineers can have a hard time finding work.  I'd do petroleum engineering, tons of jobs and $$.

I believe most states university systems take both (SAT & ACT). I took both back in the 90s when I was in HS, I don't know if they still have it but back then there was SAT2, which were essays which had to be taken to get into a lot of schools. As for the math, part, I wouldn't worry about it too much, just go to JC or once you get accepted, take some math classes and learn what your missing. At most universities you can switch majors, so if your too low now, you could get there then switch after you have taken the necessary math classes to close the gap.

Aerospace engineers can have a hard time finding work.

This is very true.  The industry is tied to governmental defense spending pretty heavily.  I was finishing school just as the first Gulf War was ending and the defense budget was getting cut.  All of the guys who were a year or two ahead of me that I knew got laid off.  When I was looking, nobody was hiring.  The industry is very cyclical.  Also, with the current government spending levels and the cutting that is going to have to come in the next few years, I would say that defense spending in the US is going to go through a period of many years of deep cuts.

I've never worked a day in the field that I studied.

That's why I'm taking the degree I'm going to get for it and joining the Air Force.  :D

540 in math is kind of low hate to say it  but even I got a 620 and  never took higher than algebra I. I suppose talking my way into Physics and  Honors Physics  helped(its all the same maths)

My youngest took her SAT the first time back in grade school (5th or 6th grade) and tested higher than 80% (IIRC) of the college bound students.

Yeah, I tend to get screwed over by the trick questions and such. 5 minutes before the math portion ended, i went back and checked my answers, and I realized that I had screwed up on, fallen for tricks on, or simply missread about 7 questions. I only had time to go back and fix 3. And thats only the ones I caught.

You're obviously a bright kid so it shouldn't be too hard raising your math score, I encourage you to look at khanacademy or just pick up a calculus text book and start teaching yourself.  I don't think the SATs require calc knowledge though, so a better use of your time might just be to practice SAT type math questions, get familiar with the types of problems they'll throw at you.
