What are most houses made of ? ? Wood. So could a handful of incindeary bombs wipe out are most populated citys? I think so, so part of my doomsday plan is to leave the city and go deep deep in the woods.. All you really need is guns, ammo, some medicine, water purify system, and hunting and fishing knowledge.. Dig your self a vietcong style dirt and wood bunker and learn the terrain.. 1 man army is not just a saying, 1 man could rain hail upon a small army.... If you know how.

Agreed, Curry. And thats assuming anyone is stupid enough to actually attempt an invasion of the USA without most of Europe, or Russia and China on their side.
Like Russia, and china to a slightly lesser extent, the USA is large enough that a ground war would come down to the destruction of military forces, not the capture of territory. Production is too widely dispersed to make viable targets for an offensive, and worst case scenario, we can strip everything else bare, and concentrate AA defenses around the most important targets.
And in addition to that, we have some formidable natural barriers, particularly in the west. I live in the cascade mountain range, and I wouldn't care to try pushing armor through some of these hills. And logistics..... *shudder*.

My mom lives on 25 acres that I knew as a kid. It's almost all tall trees. (oak, pecan, walnut and elm.) It has a small pond, but a lake next to her property. It's been groomed and looks like the black forest, but greener.

Calm down Rambo. I don't think anyone is saying there is anything wrong with prepping, I do it myself. However, there are plenty of people who think they'll just head for the hills and live off the land when "the doomsday" comes. An individual's personal plan for dealing with a disaster situation varies greatly by family, location, and likelihood of disaster. If you think your biggest threat is some nation dropping incendiary bombs on our major cities, then more power to you. But just because someone disagrees with you, doesn't mean they are... SHEEPLE! :O

100 square miles of forest and 50,000 guys who think they'll just live off the land.

Hopefully the asteroid or bomb will land right on my head. Don't want to run around chasing deer or sheep down for a Friday "Date Night"

Thats one of my college text books. I kid you not.
Teaches you how to ID wood based on grain patterns, vessel characters, color, texture, etc.

I wonder how you'd get your ammo and guns and supplies 150 miles into some woods. It's not like that kind of terrain exists just
anywhere. If the big cities burn, the smaller towns won't stay Mayberry RFD for long.
-
A successful plan for a "doomsday" scenario should never include the phrase "all you really need is."

you must be one of those people on that doomsday preppers show on TV

$50 bucks says I out last you, even with your fancy bunker.
Really, you don't need some fancy bunker. Back in idaho, I built an native-american earth-lodge for the fun of it. It was really quite cozy even in winter with a fire going. It would also be harder to spot from the air than your big-arsed concrete bunker.

i would goto McDonalds and order a big mac, they would not have large fries though i believe if there is s emergency :old:

You forget the Rednecks and Tornadoes. Other countries may have them, but not on the scale we do.

China is building entire cities, mostly still empty 100s of miles away from shoreline and logic populated industrial ,economic centers; 4000 ft above sea level, deep in desert but close to fresh water . I've read this apartments and houses are sold mostly to world rich elite / preppers and kept as safe retreat for a doomsday event.BS or not, i don't know.

Check for city of Ordos, China on Google Earth/map.

Lol, yeah. They'd have everybody with a gun AND his grandmother taking pot shots at them from the trees.

If infrastructure is ever hit so hard it collapses there will be a huge die-off ..like watchin a house of cards fall.
One Second After is a good read on what a small town would go thru.
That book uses the EMP pulse strike as the deed that brings down the USA.
.. FYI EMP is nowhere near as effective as the book portrays.
(part of 'electronic countermeasures' is knowing how EMP works and how to prevent it)
Lucifer's Hammer is another good read ..altho tailored more to a world event.
It would boil down to water-food-shelter in a hurry.
I would not want to live in that world.

Yes and yes.
However, if we are forced to live in a hell on earth, some of us will live and some will die.
Don't plan for yourself, plan for your spawn.

The issue is that outside of modern society, you can't plan for future generations, as there is no stability. I mean even now, you can only help your offspring so much, and much of that comes in the form of guidance and teaching.
What if you built an underground bunker out in the woods. You got it all stocked up with a couple years worth of food, while you learn or re-learn nessecary survival skills. After three weeks out, your son gets mauled by a bear, and his leg has to be amputated. That supply of food is finite, and won't last long. Your son is no longer much good for hunting, and he probably wouldn't have a usefull trade that he can practice without a leg. Depending of the scale of the disaster we're talking about, your son probably won't get a mate (and thats what it WOULD be, a mate, not a wife, but a mate who would be with him because he could sire and provide for her offspring), as he won't be able to provide her or her offspring.
Point is that if you can't plan for future generations, then plan for the next 10 years. If you can't plan for the next 10 years, plan for the next 5. If you cant plan for the next 5, plan for just the upcoming year. If you can't plan for the next year, plan for tommarow. And if even your best laid plans don't survive the night, then focus on the next hour, the next minute, the next second. Focus on staying alive in the here and now. Becuase if you die right now, all of your plans, all of your preperation, were for naught.

Wife is disabled, I am on Social Security startin in June ..
I haven't decided yet what hobby I will pursue, thinkin R/C flyin
or mayhap shooting/reloading in /45 ACP ..would like to get a Kimber and mayhap a tommygun replica in semi-auto.
Gettin too old an slow to 'fight' ..would rather just have a .45 handy for the idiot encounter that may happen.
Not much says 'don't bother me' as well as a .45 round in center of mass.
-Just sayin.

what kind of small army, we talkin pros with air suppert and long range artillery, if thats the case you're most likely screwed.

The people with bug out plans better be ready for the 50 armed dudes wandering around taking peoples stuff.
Not that I believe that there is ever going to be a need for any of that prepping. Those "preppers" live under the influence of fear and paranoia seems like a sad way to live.

Prepping is a very overarching concept. Prepping can be the guy who lives in a bunker and has food stored for 40 years, or it can be the guy with a few days of food and water in his closet. It's extremely individualistic and as always, it's the extremes who make a name for the entire community. For me, it's not a polar shift, it's not solar radiation, but just your run of the mill natural disasters. Most notably, I think about New Orleans, or the tsunamis we've seen in Asia; first world countries can turn into a hellscape very quickly. As of right now, I've got some food stored, and I've also got a 72-hour bag (BOB Bag) that I can quickly grab and be 'okay' for a few days. I have fun with preparing, it's almost another hobby of mine.
For many, prepping isn't done with a constant sense of paranoia. Not preparing however, is living in a fantasy world.

bwahahahahahaaahahahaha
I am not even going to read any further into this thread because I doubt the concise and accurate statement right here can be topped. The rest is no doubt going to be an ongoing diatribe of doom and gloom countered with zombie ammo and dryer lint.
Thank you Curry1 for making me laugh out loud at my desk at work. Too damn funny.

You're probably the type to test your bunker against small arms fire by shooting a .22 at it, because its one of the most common calibers in the USA, and completly ignore the fact that 'most common' is a relative term, and that even .50cal BMG isn't overly difficult to aquire.

I laughed my arse off. All I could do was plot out how I would go about attacking it.
Best plan I could come up with involves our friend's light aircraft, which we would arm with a side door-mounted gatling gun we built from a conversion kit for a pair of ruger 10/22's (Of course we'll have upgraded it to accomodate 7.92mm weapons :D) to act as a poor man's AC-130 and an AWACS.
