Most people got rid of their google accounts when they changed the privacy rules.

Actually, I bet very few people got rid of their Google accounts.
No problems on my end.

Heya Dred,
all my Gmail/google accts seem to be just fine ( cept I did accidently messed up my squadmail list by marking a thread as spam unknowingly....... took awhile to figure that one out )
but anyhows......
what Web Browser do you use? check your add-ons for your particular Web Browser and check to see if a "funky" toolbar might of overwrote your prefered settings or homepage stuff ???
I am under the assumption your homepage of your browser opens to Google........
Google also is trying to throw this "New Look" on to everyone, I keep dismissing it and switching back to the old look
edit: I do not use or mess with that Google+ crap......... just the email, search and docs/calendar for group sessions at times only....
hope this helps

Never mind. Turned out someone managed to get me a "rootkit.zero access" trojan.
Was weird because it only seemed to effect my google account. I use many depending on what I'm doing. other accounts such as yahoo and AOL seemed to work fine.
I decided o check my Nod32 log files and noticed the other day that it blocked and quarantined a "kryptic tojan" then noticed that when I did a google search on it no matter what link I clicked on it brought me to links to Nortons (further feeding my skepticism and suspicions that alot of these viruses are created by the AV folks themselves)
realising I wasnt going to get any answers through a simple google search. I went to "bleepingcomputers.com" and did a search there where I saw someone had a similar problem but with a different bug and got the idea of using "combofix.
Running that it within a a couple of minutes identified the problem and listed it as being a particularly difficult one.
1/2 hour and 3 reboots by combofix later. Its gone and everything is acting normally again.
ticks me off cause everyone in this house has their own machines. But when Im not home. My wife and my son will use mine because my screen is bigger then the ones on their laptops which they wanted instead of the desktops I offered to build.
Wife is a bigtime facebook user. My son...well. he's 23.
Need I say more?
My daughter is the only one that never uses this thing. She prefers her laptop. Mostly cause its hers. LOL

Moral of the story:
1) No AV can be trusted.
2) Create a separate admin account to which only you know the password. Every other user account goes to limited profile, including the one you use.
3) You should get rid of Google spyware - but that's just my opinnion, you're entitled to let Google store all your personal data for marketing purposes :)
