I just found that the rural property I am looking at can get 1.5meg DSL. Is this fast enough to provide decent gameplay? I know D/L speeds would be slow but I can use satellite for that.
This will be excrucating coming from a 25 meg cable connection lol.
Skuzzy?
Thanks

Internet gaming doesn't need high bandwidth, just a consistent connection with less than a 300 ms ping time.
-
Aces High will work well with a dial-up modem connection, as long as the variance is constant. I have seen 100Mb/s connections that were worse than a 28.8Kb/s conneciton.

not to hijack, but whats the ball park figure for download speeds in newer DSL connections? I've had my dsl for around 5 years, and it still runs good, but I MAY be lucky to get 1 gb/s downloads....

use pingtest.net (http://pingtest.net) there if you get a chance. that would help you out a lot.
-
what pings are you getting with cable?

In my area I have an average ping of 35 often less with Comcast.

I have 1.5 meg dsl and i dont get more than 90 ping on AH, and even less ping on my other games I play. Average ping for me is 55-70.

Skuzzy, General thoughts on using a 3G, 3G HSPA+ or 4GLTE connection? I know how much this varies, but I was wondering what are your current thoughts on using a wireless connection?
-
Wireless is always going to be more problematic than a wired connection. Give up any hope of having a stable VOX connection in the game as the game uses UDP for VOX (lower overhead) and when an error in a UDP data packet happens that packet is lost forever.

you'd be 10 years in the future getting 1Gb/sec on DSL :D
VDSL2+ will give you ~50Mbps down depending on your line.
-
My DSL maxes out at 1.6MB, ping to MA server is always 210 - 214, and no problems here (I'm in Australia, thus the slightly higher ping)

errm.... I meant 1mb/s.
Dont know why i hit g instead of m.... probably habbit from talking about HDD speeds :bhead

The only thing you really need to worry about with 1.5meg rural DSL is the distance your data has to travel on copper. Do you see any snowshoes up on the lines between the telephone poles near your new house?

what are those things? (snowshoes) I always wondered.

They allow enough extra line in the aerial line so that if they need to work on it they can lower it all down to ground level since you need an enclosed trailer to properly splice fiber.
