Sadly, I think my 2 year old $12 Logitech 3D Pro is on its last legs :cry
So I am looking to get a new stick, wondering which stick is best, or at least pretty good?
looking for a twisty stick with a throttle, no pedals, I'm too used to twisty :D
Thanks! :salute

I have an Saitek AV8R-01. I like it because there are not too many buttons. I don't like twisty stick, and currently use my keyboard for rudder... But plus sides on this stick are it's got a wide and heavy base, as well as heavy spring in the twist. Also, it's got a Mode Select toggle on it that I have mapped to my GV engine, so I can turn the key on and off. :x

X-52 Pro.

I used a MS Force Feedback Pro for around 10 years, then Microsoft stopped supporting gameport devices with Win7. I tried the Saitek X52, and it was nice, looked cool, very easy to program, and had a LOT of buttons, but it was not as precise as my old FFPro. I even tried the 'mod' where you move the Hall Effect magnets, and while it helped, it was still sloppy.
A month or two ago I finally broke down and bought a CH Fighterstick. I absolutely love it. I instantly could tell the difference. I did move the hat switch to the lower 'thumb' button.
I use the Fighterstick in conjunction with my Saitek X52 Throttle and my homebuilt rudder pedals. Pedals take about a week to get used to (after using the twisty for 12 years)
Cheers,

Same here. It has a twist stick, but I dont use it anymore since I bought pedals. Great stick as far as I am concerned, and only about $30. Its also one of the few decent sticks I can use... as I am left handed, and this one works for either. Only down side I have seen, is that after 3 years, it starts to get a bit worn where the stick sits in the base... and can cause you to not move as smoothly. A thin coat of candlewax about once a month where these 2 parts meet makes it feel like the day I bought it.

I realize you like the twisty, but making the switch to pedals can be one of the best things you do for flight sims. :)

I used MS Sidewinder 3D Pro/FFB/Precision Pro/Precision 2 in AH1.
Now I'm using TM HOTAS-X. It's pretty good stick, but HAT switch is a little fragile.
-
Well it might not be perfect and you have to put up with the Pedals I love my Logitech G940's. Once you fly with the force feedback it is just not the same without it.
-
I've been using an X52 for about 4 years now. 2 of the buttons on the throttle are wearing out by now and activate without me pressing them sometimes. The joystick itself is getting a little stiff from all the use, but overall it still works in good condition. Almost no calibration issues, both hat-switches work fine (though I have TrackIR, so I don't use them for head movement).
I might buy another X52 when this one finally breaks. I like the feel, and have everything mapped onto it so I never have to take my hands off the controls during flight.

I use the microsoft sidewinder2 force feedback,it is twisty though i use peddles, i think you cant by em from Microsoft new anymore there are many on eBay still in box, usually from anywhere from 60 to 150 $ which for the money is one of the best (force feedback) sticks i have used.

I second the thrustmaster T flightstick X.
If you get the chance to test more than one joystick vs some others, you will find that some of the higher end sticks don't have good feel as compared to others.
I find this stick overachieves for it's price.

RedBull,
Here is a simple solution.
Started with Logitech 3d pro and used it for years. It was a twisty.
Then tried CH flight stick, CH pro throttle and Saitek pedals. Ch was not twisty. The pedals take a long time to learn, and the throttle I liked because you can program the buttons.
I did not like the CH joytick or the pedals so I tried to go back to the 3d but found out how "beginner" the joystick was in regards to movement and receiving input it was.
So I looked for a new twisty since i was already used to that type of stick.
I went and bought a Thrustmaster with a detachable throttle. It has a throttle that is attached by a cord to the joystick. You can remove the throttle and place it anywhere on your desk within the range of the cord.
I liked it but the throttle part lacked all the buttons on the CH throttle.
Soooo...I now use the Thrustmaster joystick and use the CH Pro throttle. The Thrustmaster throttle stays connected but it is not in use because I use the CH throttle.
I like this set up because I have a better performing twisty, I have a throttle with many programmable buttons and I don't have to mess with pedals under my desk.
The programmable buttons on the CH Pro throttle enable you to play with minimal use of the keyboard.
The only change I would make would be to find a Thrustmaster that does not have the throttle attached by a cord to the joystick because I do not use the throttle. I think they make one that way.
If you do not want to spend money on the CH throttle, just buy a Thrustmaster with throttle. They have 2 kinds. 1 with a throttle slider on the joystick and the one I have with the throttle attached by the cord that is removeable from the joystick base.
I have never had any plug and play issues with the thrustmaster or Ch products.
Hope this helps
ADDED-My joystick is called: THRUSTMASTER T.Flight Hotas X
The other one has a throttle lever but also has buttons on the base you can program. it is called: Thrustmaster T.Flight Stick X. Same joystick handle and internal parts as mine.

I'm using the predecessor of the Thrustmaster T-flight Hotas, a twisty stick with a separate throttle. For the most part I like it, it is formed almost similar to the Logitech 3D I used before this one. Now after testing one I'm planning to get a Thrustmaster T.16000 but keep the throttle. The T.16000 is a bit longer than the T-flight, which suits my rather broad palm. More important, the accuracy is unbelievable.

Thrustmaster Warthog Stick and Throttle, CH Combat Pro Pedals and Track IR 5.
Either stick to crap that breaks every few months or flip burgers and buy a real set of toys. So far I had the Warthog since late February and its a dream come true.
However, don't bother buying it unless you are getting rudder pedals (CH combat Pro).
Thrustmaster just feels right in your hands, its a pilots stick - however I don't recommend losing a wing in a 262 - your forearm might grow 3 inches if you manage to land it from the work out alone, ask quagmire.
Better then a pinky finger to move an entire saitek stick around in circles.

No way I'm serious enough about this game to spend another $400 on a Warthog & $100 on pedals. >$1000 for the tower I built already. I'll stick with the 3d pro until it breaks then a Thrustmaster T flight. :old:

Started with a 3D Pro. When it got sloppy :joystick: I bought another 3D Pro and used the first one as a throttle, poorman's HOTAS. :D
Now , CH Fighterstick, CH Pro Throttle, Saitek Combat Pro Pedals.
Since I only fly P38s, the 3 buttons on the throttle are mapped as; engine 1, both engines, engine 2. :old:

My second Logitech Freedom cordless, last one got sloppy and the hatswitch started to fail. So I needed a new stick fast and bought the same stick because it was cheap and available there and then, now this one has the same problems as the last one.. Think I am going to get me a Thrustmaster T.16000 and perhaps a set of Track IR one of these days.. Tired of not being able to look around my plane without a flickering between views, and spraying bullets into thin air because I can't center my stick. :(
If I don't win the lottery first, then I will go for the latest Hotas Warthog and the CH pedals together with the Track IR. -And a Harley Davidson VRod for sunny days.. :D
Question for Delirium and PFactorD: How would you describe the Warthog stick compared to the other sticks you've had before? I am pretty sure it is a huge upgrade, beyond my imagination probably.. But I am sure others here also would like to know what it feels like to play AH with a stick of this caliber.. :aok :rock

I used CH stuff, first gameport and then USB for at least 15 years. Without a doubt, the Warthog has the nicest and smoothest (and heaviest) feel of all the sticks I've ever used. The biggest draw back is the programming, the CH guys have a much more simple and user friendly programming software suite than the Thrustmaster guys do.

Looking at the Thrustmaster for a replacement. Whats the deal with the removable throttle? Is it hard wired to the joystick or{?}, cordless?

I see.. So it's not just plug and play if I decide to make that upgrade? I'd really love to try a stick like that some time, and with all those buttons.. Wow, that must be really nice when you got it all programmed and set to your liking.. Hoping for a slight drop in price, but I guess that's not going to happen yet..

It is plug and play, I just don't bother to use the Thrustmaster for any programming. I would strongly urge you to update the firmware as soon as you buy it with that software, however.

I am using the Saiteck X65 and i have had zero problems with it ... the only downfall is getting used to no moving parts on joystick.

Its wired but the cord is enough to set it up how you like. Just got one recently with my old sidewinder dying. There's better sticks out there, but for the price it works good.

Wow, Pand.. :O
Sweet setup!
I ended up with the Thrustmaster T.16000 for now, as price became an issue. Tested the stick for the first time today, and I must say.. Compared to the old Logitech, I could not believe I was playing the same game. The smoothness was beyond anything I've tried before, and it was really a dream to fly with.
The old Logitech made my plane bounce all over the place, it spiked when I tried to aim and made my whole plane stutter. The hatswitch needed brute force and weird tweaks to even respond, and in most cases it responded by flickering between the view I wanted and the frontview. The result was I could see nothing, it just gave me a headache. But I still managed to fly with it and put up a somewhat decent fight. :joystick:
Todays testing of my new stick showed that I need some time to get used to the new buttons on it, been flying with the Logitech since 2007 so now I got that noob feeling again with my new stick. Have to look down on my stick to locate the flaps and other stuff that I am used to operate without thinking about it. But it will come with practice, I just can't wait to get used to the Thrustmaster. :aok

ok, a squaddie had trouble with the twist on the T16000, maybe he had a defective exemplary...I bought a 2nd one in case they stop selling it :P
Everyone in this thread, if you could do with the cheap saitek, you'll love th T16000

I have my original Saitek Aviator I purchased 3 years ago and couldn't be happier. I love this joystick as it has the simple look of a WW2 joystick rather than a modern jetfighter look as most of the newer joysticks do. Saitek still offers this stick but they replaced the toggle switches with buttons. Still has an old fashioned classic look to it. Two thumbs up!
