Thanks to Lyric1 for finding me the info for this aircraft. It is a Spitfire Mk IXE (essentially the same as our Spit 16) of 26 GIAP, the unit charged with the air defence of Leningrad. By the time they received Mk IXEs in 1945 the front had moved too far west for these aircraft to see any real action. Unlike most VVS regiments who left their Spits in the standard RAF green/grey scheme, 26 GIAP repainted their aircraft in Soviet green and blue. The arrow was more often used as a unit or theater marking on VVS aircraft, but in this case it was used as the personal insignia of the unit's CO, Lt. Col. Vasilii Matsievich.

I'd probably catch fire in it. :)
-
So in other words.... it's a non-combat skin? :devil
-
Looks damn good Greebo.
-
I really like that :aok
-
sick bucket pass me it quick! :D
-
Really bruv? I thought you'd appreciate a Spit 16 with go-faster stripes..... :D
-
any spitfire with a Communist red star on it makes me cry inside.
The way the Polish pilots were treated after the war :furious
-
I liked this one because its different. Just about every other Spit 16 is painted in the standard green/grey RAF scheme, so the only variation is the AF/squadron markings and maybe D Day stripes.
I'll skin stuff from any nation, the pilots/crews were all brave men whatever their politics were.
-
Awesome!
now I will HAVE to try the spit 16!
edit: Great Job btw Greebo!

After reading A Question of Honor I'm right there with you :furious
I think I'll read it again! :aok

Love that Greebo. It's amazing what a difference a good skin makes to an aaging 3D model. :aok
-
+1 makes the spitfire acceptable.

So we're glossing over the fact it was rear lines defense in 1945, when the "front" was over Berlin itself, a place such a short range plane had no hopes of ever reaching?
Just curious.... 'cause, ... you know... the general skins requirements and all...

I would say it is legit based off of this book I have they had them since 1944 & it says they did see combat.

The requirement for combat service concerns HTC introducing a new ride to the game. The only requirement for a game skin as stated in the help file is: "We will only accept skins that were historically used in World War II." As far as I'm concerned that means any fighter that saw service in a front line squadron, whether it saw combat or not.

Ah comeon Krusty, we got 32 spots now, lighten up a tiny bit. ;)

That is inaccurate. They will not accept non-combat skins. They have said so on many occasions. No circus formations. No unarmed recon variants for armed craft. No state-side training units for US planes, no non-combat markings in general. No hacks, no trainers, etc.
These do not meet the criteria of seeing combat. They were used simply because the Soviets used any and every plane they could in some way. It doesn't mean they were within 3 refueling stops of seeing the front lines.

So why is Shorty Longbottoms Recon Pink Spitfire in AcesHigh?
-
The pink skins on spits were ARMED recon. FR variants. Fighter-Recon.

My info counts for nothing Krusty?

I said "any fighter that saw service in a front line squadron" what has that got to do with training aircraft, unarmed recon planes and formation aircraft?
This was an armed fighter that saw operational use as part of a fighter regiment defending Leningrad. I'll submit it and let HTC decide.

krusty, if anyone has earned the right to use their own discretion on what skins are appropriate for the game it's greebo. He has made more aircraft and vehicles appear in the game with more quality and more speed than anyone else in this community outside of HTC employees.
Just stop and think for a minute how much he has done... it's a mind boggling amount of work froma volunteer. (I think hes chained to a desk in a dungeon below HTC offices) :)
this skin is excellent. I want to use it on the spit16 when I fly it and from the info I have seen posted this squadron commander used this plane in combat against the luftwaffe.
there are very few skins in this game that I can tollerate using because I am such a perfectionist. needless to say anything greebo does I will use and marvel at.
-
We already have a precedent with this group in game already.
-

...and I will burn and auger in. :D
I see, in my future with this skin, a LOT of fire......and trees. Those damnable trees.... :noid
-
Thanks for the kind words Citabria. I don't expect any special treatment for my skins though, if it gets rejected then so be it. However I'm fairly confident it will be accepted.
-
It's a great skin Greebs. I'll use it for sure. Putting it in the same category as trainers or formation planes is a bit of a silly stretch. Hope to see it soon. :salute
