Title: First kayak trip of the year
Post by: Tank-Ace on April 22, 2012, 09:04:20 PM
Finally got around to hauling the stuipid thing to the river, was only out for about 2hrs, and I flipped several times out there on the Columbia, but I had a blast. Forgot how poor the initial stability is on my sea kayak, but I also forgot how great the secondary stability is.

Anyone else do much Kayaking?

I have the Kayaking BSA Certification but not really not much kayaking, however I have spent a lot of time in racing shells.

It is the hardest sport, endurance wise you can do.  I wouldn't do it if you are looking for any semblance of racial diversity though.  :lol

Yeah, I did a ~150 mile kayak trip down the Columbia as part of a class at school, and it was brutal.

We ended up taking the whole strech of the Columbia from just past bonneville damn to just before Astoria in about 4 1/5 days.

With last years police camp we went kayaking down a river in Athens, East of Atlanta. Took us a good 5 hours to complete it, didn't tip at all even though practically everyone else did, the main adult we were with there flipped his over 16 times the amateur  :rofl :rofl However in the middle of it I got gestured down the wrong path and found myself in the rocks for 45 minutes with a few other guys. Oddly enough the people who went the right way less than 50 feet to the left of us took longer than me and my little group. I don't even know how that's possible. kept out of the sun with all the tree's around, kept in the shade, wore a little sun block, didn't even get slightly burned when everyone else did hehe :devil

I'd have to disagree. That award goes to wrestling. The sport where you run 5-10 miles a day for practice, and the field is only 10 yards across. Nothing has worn me out more.

The last extended trip I did was a 5 day run on the Llano River. You see nothing but cattle (it is open range) and turkeys. Eat what you carry or catch.

Sadly, my kayak is in California (and probably melted by now).

Also, I haven't seen a decent river in Texas.

The ones I've seen around Austin are all flat.

Well, lately flat and out of water.  :p

They are rivers....... your looking for whitewater? That can be found too... depending on the time of year and rainfall.

Flat water can be fun to kayak on too. Around Barton Springs there in Austin is nice.

Is it still considered kayaking if you can put your arms out and use them as pontoons?
