Title: "Music" video
Post by: jimson on April 23, 2012, 10:41:32 PM
Our friends son is the guitarist. My wife and daughter are actually in this video. As for me, well I can appreciate the heavy riffs but the vocals? I don't get it. I'll take Led Zeppelin, thanks just the same.

Might want to include some type of warning disclaimer! :devil

Not my cup of tea but I'm sure there's some metalheads that will like it.

What's this music genre called? I thought "heavy metal" referred to something like Metallica although could also apply to Def Leppard, Judas Priest and the like.

This is altogether different. Is it "speed metal"?

Edit: I guess this is just what "metal" has evolved into.

Most kids today call it screamo but that's something different altogether.
What this is generally considered metalcore (or deathcore more specifically for this).
It's a result of a mixing of metal and post-hardcore punk in the late 90's. Deathcore throws a heavy death metal influence in the mix.
There's a lot of different strains of metal (well there has been since the late 80's/90's at least) and this is almost definitely the worst... also the most popular... and has pretty much become synonymous with the metal modern sound.

For some reason there's a lot of fairly big metalcore bands from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, which just blows my mind, because as a southeastern Pennsylvania resident all I can imagine coming from Lancaster is the Amish...

Metalcore, Hmm screamo seems more descriptive.

Oh well. They are actually a good group of young guys. They've been over to the house for BBQ.

Well there's a lot of screamy music these days, so screamo would be kind of a blanket term. Which is actually how it ends up being used...

Screamo is actually a specific genre of music... namely raw, aggressive, dissonant emo (a term which got similarly misused starting in the mid 2000's...)
It's really actually quite abrasive, far more so than any metalcore that your average 15 year old listens to. It's not heavy, though, it's decidedly punk, not metal at all.

I know some people that are in/have been in metalcore bands and a lot of them are pretty cool people. Just people that like some pretty ehh music.

I honestly can't stand the rough sort of screaming, however, the instrumentals were nice. I prefer Metal personally, favorite genre being Symphonic Metal.
