Title: Is it the music or the words?
Post by: Melvin on May 03, 2012, 10:47:53 PM
NEW POLL

My Wife and I were sitting around when this discussion came up:

I said that I enjoy songs for the lyrics.

She said that she enjoys songs for the music.

So, what is it, lyrics or notes?

It's kind of both for me.  But the first thing I listen to is the music...then the words.

at some point, when freddie starts the vocal improv, in my opinnion, its simply insane, I love it. mainly if I'm using phones, the voices inside my head... everything... I go crazy and have a freaking overdose

But also, at some point the lyrics makes it all:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R7xRtSUunEY
One that does not understand portuguese and just listened to this song would think its some kind of happy song about beaches or whatever, something light.

But as the lyrics talks about freedom of speech and the fear (it was a dictatorship by that time and this was one of the tortured guys) you see the true meaning of it all and mixed with the light melody it makes you feel kinda powerfull and hopefull!

So IMO it depends. if the lyrics is to good or the melody is too good but the other is real bad it might ruin everything... but I don't know... cases and cases. some rap songs (I don't know much US rap) of 1990's-2000 have deep lyrics yet with simple melodies. and are just great.

Please try to listen to this song and tell me what story you hear. Or just tell me how you felt about the music.

What do you think of Creeping Death?

Considering I listen to a lot of techno and classical, I have to say I enjoy the music more than the vocals most of the time.
Title: Re: Is it the music or the words?
Post by: Raphael on May 03, 2012, 11:29:40 PM
Creeping death, just like when I was a child and loved ACDC, I really liked the music!  :rock couldn't

now that I've researched the lyrics (couldn't understand much during the video due to all the rythim distracting my head) I like it too.

but i've got to say tho, by the end the melody was a bit to much. but then its a personal taste thing so I don't know what's the answer to that main question, I guess it depends on personal things! for me. I like both, me and my GF love something that we can dance to, like old US funky music yeah!  :D

Creeping Death isn't asking a question, it's telling a story.

@Banshee7 I hear ya.

@Kilo2 Yup

@F22 You're disqualified. Unless you re-qualify yourself by having an opinion.

@Raphael Creeping Death isn't a question. Listen to the words and tell me what you think the story is about.

For the rest of you posers, what is it, notes or lyrics?

Any song.

It really depends on the genere of music. Country is all about the lyrics whether its a play on words,or a real life story. With some really good playing thrown in occasionally. Rock lyrics go all over the place. Now my being a weekend pro musician,I listen to everything in a song. Lyrics, groove, harmonies, etc. So I don't really like a song for just the words or music. But,to each his own I guess.

Rock lyrics go all over the place.

Stop right there.

Country songs run the gambit from killing spouses to drinking receptacles. Don't generalize rock music as being scatter-brained.

So, what's it gonna be? Poop or get off the pot music boy. Do you like music for the lyrics or the beat?

Rock Lyrics are all over the place. I've been playing in bands since the late 70's,so I kind of know what I'm talking about here. Ronnie James Dio's Lyrics are fantasy styled, kind of  Lord of the rings type stuff. King Crimson's lyrics sometimes don't make any sense at all. Rush,Yes,and other progressive rock band sometimes have strange lyrics. It depends on the genere, the band, etc.  I hear everything because I have too. As part of the rhythm section I have to listen for cues whether they are vocal,a drum fill,or a guitar riff. I don't like a particular song for one element.

You give good examples of rock craziness.

Would you say that rock musicians are the only cats that run off the wall?

Or would you agree that musicians from all genres have a tendency to scatter to the winds?

All that matters is what it makes or encourages her to do.

You will be surprised in your ability to tolerate anything she plays as long as it "works".

I posted that as evidence for lyrics that were all over the place. And I said I was a music guy.

I also don't really judge music on who else is going to like it but if I like the sound. So if some hipster stuff sounds good to me then I will listen to it

I would say it depends on my personal taste, and on the song.  I like songs like Led Zeppelin's "Gallows Pole" for the story, but I also love the guitar work in that song.  Aerosmith has some lyrically amazing songs as well, like "Adam' Apple" but they also have great music.  So I'm kinda divided on this one.

Music, of course.

Without melody, tempo and rhythm, lyrics are just words.  Nothing more exciting than a poem or a grocery list.

The music has always been the way to remember a story, since before there were written words.

It has to be both. It cannot be one or the other. The lyrics have to match the tone of the music, and the music has to match the feel of the lyrics. Once that is accomplished, you have Pink Floyd.
My true feelings are anyone who truly loves music for it's full passion and depth would fully enjoy Pink Floyd on every level, no matter their favorite genre.
My opinion of course, but I do welcome those who feel otherwise to give it a shot sometime with a truly open mind. And no, I do not mean drug addled either.

RHCP's lyrics are all over the place.

I'd say mostly for me, it's music and "how" a song is being sung, more so than what is actually being said.  Although obviously a lot of songs I like a lot are because of the meaning.

For example I can barely understand Thom Yorke (radiohead) in most songs but it's the way that he sings that I love so much.

I listen to songs because of the words though. I could care less if a tune has a great beat, if it's telling a story that I don't care for I won't listen again.

To me it's all about the story that the writer is trying to tell.

A story which, in the days of the very first bards, was set to music to make it easy to remember and teach to others  :D

It doesn't have to have words for it to be telling a story.  A good instrumentalist can tell you all the story you need to know by channeling their emotional state into the music that they are playing at the time.  :aok

Here's the thing...

Last night my Wife and I were sitting around listening to music. She got all excited about some tune, the conversation went like this:

HER: Ohhh I love this song.
ME: Really? what's it about?
HER: I don't know, I never listen to the words. I just like the tune.
ME: WHAT? How can you say you like a song if you never listen to the words?
HER: It's got a good beat.
ME: But... but... what if this song was about something awful?

I know for a fact that she does listen to the words, but it made for an interesting discussion.

Other times I get conversations like this:

THEM: This band is terrible.
ME: Why do you say that?
THEM: Listen to the song, it's so aggressive and obviously evil.
ME: WHAT? Do you even know what their singing about?
THEM: No, but the music is so violent.
ME: Whatever... Try listening to the words, you might have a different outlook.

This is why the lyrics mean more to me than the tune. (In most cases)

I see where you are coming from, but without music it would be just that, poetry or in some cases just words.  You used Metallica's "Creeping Death" as example earlier.  This is a perfect example of a biblical story told from another point of view.  It is told from the point of view of death as if it were a person.  He is the plague sent to kill the first born son of the non believers. It also has good music.  Now Pink Floyd uses music to tell the story just as much as the lyrics.  "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" is a good example of this.  The long instrumental sections bring out the emotion in the song, as well as the lyrics.  So what I'm saying is, you cannot pick just music or lyrics, they go together and compliment each other to make a song.

I love country music for the lyrics. There are many artists who tell their own stories, and some who have fun writing their songs...and with that it makes for some fun lyrics to sing along to that are catchy.

I like rock for both music and lyrics. When I make Aces High videos, I pick songs that have to do with what I'm trying to get across. I try to line up clips with either lyrics, or beats, or both. It takes a very keen ear to realize some of the things I have done in films.

Since I've been loving you is my favorite Led Zeppelin song or When the Levee Breaks.

"Since Ive been loving you" is truly a great song, also "when the levee Breaks" both awesome songs, timeless...

they do not have one bad song....every bad out there has a bad song that just don't do it...lots of bands only have a few good songs.....but Zeppelin....not a one

they are in my mind the greatest of all time.

for many years I would listen to nothing but Zeppelin, the first music other then Zepp I started listening to was Metallica back when I was about 20....love there early stuff, but man did they choke on the black Album and every one after that... :lol

now I do get into a lot more different music...even like eminem

but my favorites besides Zepp would be

Flotsam and Jetsam
Megadeth
The Animals
Ten years after
Black Sabbath
Iron Maiden
Judas Priest

Blood red skies by Judas priest describes me perfectly

As the sun goes down, I move around
Keeping to the shadows
Life, hangs by a thread
And I've heard it said, that I'll not see tomorrow

If that's my destiny, it'll have to be
So I'll face the future
Running out of time
I'm on the line
But I'll go down fighting

Felt the hand of justice
Telling wrong from right
Threw me out upon the street in the middle of the night

Cybernetic heartbeat
Digital precise
Pneumatic fingers nearly had me in their vice

Not begging you
I'm telling you

You won't break me
You won't make me
You won't take me,
Under blood red skies

You won't break me
You won't take me
I'll fight you under
blood red skies

Through a shattered city, watched by laser eyes
Overhead the night squad glides
The decaying paradise

Automatic sniper
With computer sights
Scans the bleak horizon for its victim of the night

They're closing in
They'll never win

You won't break me
You won't take me
You won't make me,
Under blood red skies

You won't break me
You won't take me
I'll fight you under
blood red skies

As the end is drawing near
Standing proud, I won't give in to fear
As I die a legend will be born
I will stand, I will fight
You'll never take me alive
I'll stand my ground
I won't go down

You won't break me
You won't make me
You won't take me,
Under blood red skies

You won't break me
You won't take me
just I'll face you under
blood red skies

You'll never take me alive
I'm telling you
Hands of justice
I will stand, I will fight
Never surrender
As the sun goes down
I won't give in to fear
