so that in the case of a custom arena with no icons, you could hit a mapped button, and it would turn on icons for 5 seconds and then shut them off. but only for you, not everyone else.

Kind of defeats the purpose of a no icon arena.

not really, this way you could only turn them on for a second. it would give you the best of both worlds as far as icons vs no icons.

Kind of why I'm opposed to the no friendly icon setup in the first place

I think it would be cool to go the "Battlefield" way of things, only friendlies have icons above their heads, but an enemy can be "spotted" by pushing a mapped button, giving them a icon above their head... Just a thought :old:

^This^
It really defeats the purpose of a no icon setup. May as well have them turned on otherwise. :aok

Or a use one time with a 5 minute wait before you can use it again.

Why?

you're flying along in a no icons arena, you need to know where your guys are. you're in range of a bunch of planes. you flash IFF for a second, now you know.
just a modern twist. that's all. its not for everyone, most people don't like no icons, but some do.

The "need to know" is the whole point of the no icon arena. It simulates the time before radar, IFF, linked comms, etc. If you need to know where your guys are pay attention, maintain good SA and use voice comms.

you're assuming squad or team, whats if you're a single, by yourself? is your answer not to go in?

This would allow a full switch no icon arena to be more playable to the lone wolf masses.
It would help to simulate those things that casual players don't do and that is squadron and wing man training.
In RL pilots had different markings and numbers on their planes.
In IL2, no icon servers are very successful. There, pilots have been known to flash their nav lights for a few seconds to help a squad mate get oriented.
It would have to be something that one could only toggle for a few seconds and not be able to hold down, otherwise it would defeat the purpose of no icons.
-
How many times do you have to see who the bandit is before you defeat the purpose of not seeing who the bandit is?
If you are going to be on the honor system, which is what you are proposing, you may as well have icons on and trust everyone to toggle them off.

I believe the concept is a momentary toggle that would not be able to be held down for an extended period of time. Perhaps the answer is that when you toggle the switch, your icon would be also visible to the enemy, therefore you would be less likely to abuse it.

No icons means no icons.. anything else defeats the purpose of a no icon environment.
It would kill the purity of the no icon environment and they dynamics of game play in said environment..
Lone wolfs can do very well in a no icon environment with time under their belt and a can do attitude.
On the other hand if the server operatore could enable or disable such an option then it would have a place in an "intermediate" server as no enemy icons does to help players transition to moving into playing a true no icon server enviroment ,such as a server were no icons at all ever would be allowed.

That is a lot better than IFF. Why not wish for something like that instead?
