Took a trip through Northern Arkansas last week, and stopped here for a few hours. Beautiful grounds and trails, very eerie and humbling. :salute
Almost half of the enlisted troops and many of the officers in the Union Army of the Southwest at the Battle of Pea Ridge spoke German as their first language.
Pea Ridge was the only major Civil War battle in which Indian troops participated. Almost 1,000 Cherokee made up two Confederate regiments, with Cherokee Stand Watie as their Colonel. The Indian Brigade joined McCulloch’s division.
There were four Medal of Honor recipients in the Battle of Pea Ridge: Private Albert Power, Captain William P. Black, Colonel Eugene A. Carr, and Colonel Francis J. Herron.

They took scalps before the major battle started. They raided a camp site. When the battle started the cannon fire scared many off.
Thats cool I live like 20 mins from there.

Kilo you should take a trip there if you are that close. You can take the driving tour, but lots of people walk it and also bike through the 7 mile long tour. :aok

Great post. I thought I had an idea what the Battle of Gettysburg was like....until I finally got to go see the battlefield. Truly an humbling experience, to be on ground hallowed by the blood of brave men.
-
I was at Pea ridge a few years back. Hoping to do a reenactment there.

Great pictures!
It is really sad to see how many American Civil War battlefields are being swallowed up and turned into strip malls.

Yep, especially Walmart.

That's relatively close to the headquarters of Walmart. :D
Thanks for sharing. I grew up pretty close to there and went to the battle field a couple of times. I need to take my daughter sometime when we are visiting family.

I drove across a big chunk of Northern Arkansas from East to West, all the way to Bentonville, the HQ of Walmart. The amount of closed and abandoned businesses and homes was astounding. I had not been across there in about 10 years, and I was kind of shocked. But Bentonville was booming and nothing like a lot of other parts of the country.
The China-Mart borg is growing and all consuming. :(

Wow. I didnt know one of Santas Reindeer died in the battle

Took me a second to figure that out :lol. I've only visited Gettysburg as a civil war site. I'll always remember walking the entire route of Picket's charge. There is always something about being where history was made that makes it seem so much more then what you can ever read. One of these days when I retire from secretly running this planet, I look forward to visiting more Civil War sites. Thanks for posting Frodo :aok
