Title: norton bombsight for Fighter/Attack planes?
Post by: 4Prop on May 15, 2012, 02:40:40 PM
I was watching a video (http://www.eaavideo.org/video.aspx?v=1364242917) the pilot said they would fly in formation with a B-24. the bombadier in the B-24 would shoot a flare off when it was time for the fighters to drop their bombs.

so my question is, would this work in AH?

if a P47 and B-17,24,29 are flying at the same alt and speed, in formation. could that bomber use his bombsight to come close to where the Fighter's bombs would hit?
I dont see it being very precise bombing on towns but maybe the strats where you would have a greater chance of destroying something

71sqn tried something similar once, B-25C and P-38s... It wasn't good. Due to lag changing relative distances, and the differences in even slightly different speeds, alts, etc, you can't drop on anything. It's an area bombing tool, and overall doesn't work so well in-game where you want more targeted drops. Far easier just to dive bomb.

Even a very generic dive bomb release will yield more accurate results.

P.S. against strats it would be useless. You're better off using those fighters for escort and simply bombing with bombers.

agreed. But it seemed like a cool idea to me. the spread of the explosions on the ground would look cool. especially depending on the formation

It will work, you need to take in account of lag as well. Generally, the 'droop snoot' needs to tell the others to drop a second before he does to compensate.

I replaced my Norton bombsite with the McAfee bombsite, and the bombs fell faster.

Norton was designed for delivering a Plutonium Containing (PC) Nuke and it excels in this area.

Is not the Norton a British Motor Cycle?

I always thought the bomb sight this country used in WWII was a "NORDON" bombsihgt
