I can't load that web page :(
-
Haven't you ever heard "Sell in May and go away". :D
-
Link isn't working for me either.
<S>...-Gixer

:bhead
-
It appears to be very realistic.
The broken link is a sign, a precursor of the real stock market game next year... :D :bolt:
-
I don't know what the heck the problem is with this link. I try to enter is as markeavacadoch.com and it comes up as this goofy link.
So replace this goofy mark whatever with market watch dot com and see if you can get into it. Otherwise I will shut down that one and find a different site to host the game on.
-
The profanity filter picked up a word and changed it to avacado. markeT WATch. I renamed the link.

Your investment may go up or down :)

I remember wayyyyyyyyyyyy back in my junior year we did a variation of this game in my economics class the resulted in half of our grade. Of course back then we had to flip through the newspaper to check our stocks performance. GE and Coca-Cola stocks were the stocks to have :old:
-
I never looked at the link and thought about profanity...oh well I guess it needed something to do today.
-
I'll play. :aok

How do I bet that a stock will go down? I’m considering using myself as a reverse barometer.

How do I bet that a stock will go down? I’m considering using myself as a reverse barometer.
It's called shorting a stock. It's done with an option. Essentially, you sell an option saying that a certain stock will be at a certain price or less on a certain date in the future. If it is at or below that price on that date, then nothing happens, but you get to keep the money that you got when you sold the option.
However, if the stock is above your price on the date that it comes due... The guy who bought the option from you in the beginning is going to exercise it. Meaning, he has the right to buy the stock from you at the lower price that you sold the option. Of course, if you don't actually own the stock you will have to buy the stock from somebody else at whatever the current market is so you can sell it for less to the guy who bought your option. Which is where the risk is for you.
It's all very arcane stuff.

Looking like a good game but would like to have more players in it than what we have so far. Thinking I am going to stay away from the technology sector if at all possible.
-
Just 2 days till we start the game. Have spots left open and it at least gets the blood boiling when something happens in the stock market and it isn't your money.

I will try to do a little update at the end of each day just in case anyone wants to pull for a specific trader in the game. Here are the leaders in the clubhouse at the end of the first day. I got lucky today...just wish I could toss around this kind of money in the real world and end the day with that kind of return on investment.
Rank Name Net Worth Today's Returns Total Returns # of Trades
1 reschke $1,022,079.00 2.21% $22,079.00 7
2 HotDogMn $1,017,785.09 1.78% $17,785.09 8
3 MrMoneyPotato $997,407.00 -0.26% -$2,593.00 4
4 Trooper2 $994,195.75 -0.58% -$5,804.25 23
5 Sandberg $976,080.25 -2.39% -$23,919.75 5

I picked a dog of a stock to start with, QQQ. I was sure the market was going to tank today, so I sold short at $60.98. The dang stock actually started rising for a minute. Combined with watching you pull away made me nervous so I covered as soon as it went negative again at $60.91. I should have stayed with my original plan and rode it out. It closed at $60.43.
I could never be a daytrader. The nerves would kill me.
-
Apple is like playing with a hot potato today.
-
Sorry, I'll get in this.. :lol
-
What a terrible day for me looked promising at the open as well.
-
Looks like my gamble with Apple is paying off.
-
It won't let me buy several different things. Stocks are over $2.00 and the purchase it under my total amount of holdings. Kinda aggrivated. On a side note. I short sold apple right before it bottomed... Then shot up again lol. There goes 1% lol
-
I thought Research in Motion had bottomed out and today it goes even lower. Same with Groupon.
-
Is the 1% volume restriction intentional? Cause I think it's restricting how much you can buy of stuff.
-
Avoid Groupon like the plague. No wait what the heck am I doing,,, BUY, BUY, BUY!!!
-
Apple is like playing with a hot potato today.
Apple is a long term investment. You want to get lucky and catch a low and buy in to wait it out.
This game lasts 30 days. It's day trader with play money.
-
On the rebound :pray

I know, I bought it at 548.00 and sold at 561.50.

Let' face facts. If our Govt. can't come up with a feasible economic plan for running our govt. efficiently
things won't improve very much. Many in Congress think they've inherited a life time job with no ceiling
on benefits and wages. And that's not pointing fingers at either party. Whos' fault is that???
To put it simply ours. To much bias towards one political party or another is not doing us anygood at all.
Somewhere, somehow, we the voters should wake up. Things won't improve unless we make it improve.
-
Man I took it in the shorts today. I wish I had shorted some mattress stocks. Tempurpedic lost nearly 50% and Matteress Firm around 40%. :bhead
-
Groupon rallied big today wooo wooo
-
brk-a ,made a little over 2k off it today.
-

I could not remove the 1% restriction. Apparently the system allows for different setups and since I went for low end simplified for the masses when setting it up it was a default, no removal option...I hate it because I now remember why the game switched to a different system after the first couple of times we ran it. I will do some digging on these games and see if we can use something different next time.
-
Had a 3.60% increase today in the stocks I hold...put me back in first place.
-
I couldn't find how to trigger price a sale on this game either.
-
Actually, I have a couple gripes about the game. You can't pre-set trades and it won't record trades unless the market is open. I tried to make a couple trades for as soon as the market opened and they didn't go thru even tho it said they were completed. The last time we did this that was allowed. You have to babysit this one. It won't do any reprogrammed trades.
Not really complaining, appreciate you taking the time to set the game up. But next time you might want to turn some options on.
-
edit nvm
-
Already looking at adjusting the game next time. I agree that you have to baby sit it as some of my trades haven't gone through either and I am more than a little upset by that fact.
-
Still, kudos to you for doing this. Once a year isn't often enough. :D
-

That happened to me and just a bit ago. I did finally get it to go through but of course the price changed so it was kinda of upsetting.
-
I made a few trades while the market was open yesterday.. they just went through today.. :(
-
Making a long term play with WFT. I think it will gain and it's cheap now. Just hope it does it before the game ends. :pray

I just did the same with NAV. Should have sold groupon earlier today.
-
Good pick. I'm tempted to buy PCAR since the Peterbilt factory is local and I know they have been working. They did cut back a few months ago but production is still steady.
-
Looks tempting. Just three months ago it was over 45.
-
Right when they cut production. Long term it's a great investment. Good company that rules the marketshare.
-
I wonder how long NAV will stay up. Whats up with gold right now?
-
I can't get any buy orders to process. It shows they went thru when I submit, but nothing shows up under orders or transactions. :furious

Same.
-
Been trying to get GTSO to go through for a day or two now and it just never registers. I don't know why this is happening. I am getting sorta frustrated with it myself to the point where I want to shut the game down early.
-
1% volume cap. You can only buy so many shares. If the volume is 100,000 you can only buy 1,000 shares
-
Tried buying 10000 shares of a stock that has over 6 million in volume, but won't go through???
-
First let me say thanks to Reschke for setting this up. You're a good guy for doing it and not responsible for Market Watch's website being buggy. Their old one we used before worked much better.
Finally got a buy order to execute and at the right price.
-
Thanks RPM. I wish the old style one was back.
-
Well, today is the last day.
-
Whoever trooper is I am coming for that top spot. :D

Thanks Reschke

Glad to do it...still looking around for another option for the next iteration of this diversion...I am in the same boat as you trying to find that real $1 million start up capital.

Yeah I kept thinking that this whole last month. If only I had the money to start investing.
If this has done anything though it has really showed me I need to start saving up so maybe I could invest real money.
I really like things like this.

Was fun, thanks Reschke for setting that up.

I never got back to you about the sauces?? :headscratch: Man I thought I did, must be losing it, sorry. I have used the wasabi sauce on salmon a few times and you were correct it is very good. I haven't had a chance to use the other two yet but should sometime this grilling season, although this summer is freaking flying by. Thanks again! :salute
